Today, the weather is good again, so I can complete my morning tasks peacefully. I speak with Pera's owner, and she agrees that I can keep Pera with me. I also look for Meefoo but can't find her.
At the shelter, I first distribute the medications and then clean the areas. After that, I feed the animals. Bella and Pera get canned food. Then, I take Bella and bring her back to Pong Park. She's happy to be back in her usual spot. After some searching, I find Randy. The other park dogs are probably taking their midday nap in hidden spots.
I then head to the temple dogs. At the temple market, I buy 40 kg of rice for Ba Bät and drop off a 20 kg sack of dry food at the rice shop for her. At the front hall and the beach, I meet all the dogs. They are all in good condition. I take a walk on the beach with some of them, where we meet Kofi and Toto. Jingo is now lying by the boats. I find Deva in her pen, and Pema has also returned. I meet her at the temple market.
Next, I visit Rita and Ernest. Ernest has asked me to check on Mayo, who no longer wants to get up and hardly eats. Mayo is already fourteen years old and seems to have neurological problems. I recommend offering Mayo concentrated wet food and encouraging her to drink plenty of water.
In the early evening, I return to the shelter dogs and administer infusions to Lena and Hannah. Finally, I check on the dogs at Pong Park again. I find all of them except Bella. I spray Meefoo's wound again. The wound is superficial and relatively dry.
Tuesday, 2 July 2024
This morning, I am helping a friend who is job hunting to make a personal connection with a property developer. After that, I am at the shelter. Pat and Claudia are already at work. I'm heading to Rayong to look for Tiny again. While still in Pattaya, I get a call from a friend who needs my help. By the afternoon, we manage to find a temporary solution to the problem.
Since it's too late to continue the search for Tiny, I head back to the shelter. Pat and Claudia have already fed the dogs, refreshed the drinking water, and cleaned the areas. I do another round of cleaning, disposing of any waste. Then, I administer medications and infusions to Hannah and Lena. On my way back, I stop by Pong Park and find Bella as well as Randy. Bella seems to be recovering from her mouth injury.
Wednesday, 3 July 2024
I arrived at the shelter very early today. I started by cleaning all the areas and then fed the animals. In the morning, I visited Jutta in Rayong. Blacky, Sternchen, Lucy, Mona, and Tessa are settling in well to their new environment. Unfortunately, during my extensive search, I couldn't find Tiny again and I have to accept that she is lost. When I lose dogs that die in my presence, I can handle it relatively well. But knowing that Tiny is wandering alone in an unfamiliar place really bothers me.
In the afternoon, I was back at the shelter. Leo joined me and took photos of the dogs. I had asked Leo to do this because I never get the chance. While Leo took pictures, I cleaned the areas again. In the late afternoon, I distributed the medications and gave Lena and Hannah their infusions.
Thursday, 4 July 2024
On my way to the shelter, I stop by Pong Park to look for Woody, who Michael said had a fight with Bo. However, I can't find either Woody or Bo. Instead, I come across Dodo and administer eye drops to him, as his eyes have been slightly inflamed for a few days.
At the shelter, the first thing I do is check on Pera. I move her to the bathroom, which offers her a view of the open interior of the house, and leave the door open. Despite her disability, I have no concerns about the other dogs approaching Pera dangerously. The household dogs are accustomed to new arrivals and acknowledge them once their curiosity is satisfied. Even the young dogs, Carla and Cora, behave well.
The dogs are also so sensitive that they notice Pera's disability, so I have no worries about bringing Pera into the house area after a while. Pera does surprisingly well there; she seems to like the new environment. Previously, she mostly lay down, but now she walks around a bit, albeit a bit unsteadily. Her eyes clearly show that she suffers from a neurological defect, but also that she has regained some courage.
The household dogs treat her well, so I can leave Pera unattended after a while and attend to my routine tasks. After distributing the medications, cleaning, and disposing of the waste, I feed the dogs. Then I go through all areas cleaning again. In between, I check on Pera, who seems to be thriving.
In the afternoon, Ernest informs me that Mayo had to be euthanized. I will take Mayo to the NPW clinic for cremation tomorrow morning. Later in the afternoon, I give Lena and Hannah their infusions. Pera has retreated to the bathroom on her own and has already fallen asleep. Late in the evening, Michael tells me that Woody seems to have recovered.
Friday, 5 July 2024
In the morning, I first go to Ernest and Rita's to pick up Mayo. Mayo was euthanized yesterday due to her rapidly deteriorating condition. Nine years ago, Mayo arrived at Ernest and Rita's while pregnant, gave birth to her puppies there, and stayed. All her puppies were successfully rehomed.
Ursi and Ulrich, who live very close to Ernest and Rita, ask me to check on two of their dogs that are showing allergic reactions. One of them is Blanca, whom I took in at the shelter years ago and who was adopted by Ursi and Ulrich. Together, we drive to the Dr. Oi Clinic, where the two dogs receive treatment.
Next, I go to the NPW Clinic and hand over Mayo for cremation. I finally arrive at the shelter in the early afternoon. Pera can now leave the bathing room independently and return on her own. The house dogs have accepted her presence and leave her alone. After distributing medications and cleaning the areas, I feed the dogs. Pera gets canned food and eats with a good appetite. I then go through the areas once more to clean and dispose of the waste. At the end of another long day, I administer infusions to Lena and Hannah.
Saturday, 6 July 2024
Pat is already working at the shelter when I arrive there in the morning. First, I check on Pera, who seems comfortable and secure in the bathroom with the door open. I take her out into the common area where she tries to orient herself. After a while, she returns to the bathroom without our assistance. Together, we then load Paco into the cage on the pickup truck. At the clinic, six staples are removed from Paco's right ear flap. The swelling has completely subsided, and the small wounds are healing quickly. Back at the shelter, Pat has already started feeding. Meanwhile, I distribute the medications and then clean the back areas. Pat finishes up the remaining tasks, and I return to the shelter in the late afternoon. After another round of cleaning, I administer the daily infusions to Lena and Hannah, as usual.
Sunday, 7 July 2024
My first task in the morning now always goes to Pera. She's in the bathroom, and I help her out into the house area. She should move around as much as possible and walks a little. I no longer worry about leaving her alone with the house dogs. Paco is glad to be rid of his bandage. His injury is healing well. I've removed his collar, and he thanks me for it.
After distributing the medications, I start cleaning, which takes up a significant amount of time today. For fun, I count the piles I gather and come to exactly 333. Once I disposed of the waste, I feed the animals and refresh their drinking water where needed. Then, I administer infusions to Lena and Hannah before calling it a day.
Monday, 8 July 2024
Pera is in the bathing area; I fetch her out onto the front area of the house, where she still wobbles a bit. After a while, she lies down in the shade of a tree. I start by giving out the medications. Pera takes them well with wet food. Paco's ear injury continues to heal. He's back to his old self again. Once I've cleaned the house, the outer areas and the double gate area, I feed them the dogs.
After a lunch break, I'm back at the shelter, going through the areas again for cleaning. Then I administer infusions to Lena and Hannah. Pera goes back into the bathing area.
Tuesday, 9 July 2024
Pat and Claudia are already working when I arrive at the shelter. Pera's condition has deteriorated rapidly over the past 24 hours, so Pat and I decide to take Pera to Dr. Oi to have her euthanized. After Pera peacefully passes away, I take her to the NPW Clinic for cremation.
In the afternoon, I return to the shelter. Pat and Claudia have fed the dogs, cleaned the areas, and refilled the water bowls. I go through all the areas once again for a final clean-up and then dispose of the waste. Afterward, I administer infusions to Lena and Hannah.
Wednesday, 10 July 2024
Thursday, 11 July 2024
This morning, I discovered that I had picked up a nail in my front right tire. Luckily, I managed to drive to the nearest repair shop, and they fixed the tire.
At the shelter, I first distributed the medications and then cleaned the areas. After that, I fed the dogs and refilled their water.
In the afternoon, I bought new dry food and went through the areas again to clean up after storing the bags. Finally, I administered infusions to Lena and Hannah.
Friday, 12 July 2024
In the morning, I catch Dodo to administer him eye drops. Dodo's eyes have been slightly infected for a few days now, but I haven't been able to find him regularly to treat him. I also check on the park dogs and find Sharkey and Randy.
At the shelter, as usual I start with medication distribution and then proceed to thoroughly clean all areas. After refilling the water containers, I feed the dogs. Following that, I do another round of cleaning. All the dogs are doing well, and Safo spends quite a while in the Dodger area. Once the food containers are collected, I give Lena and Hannah their infusions.
Saturday, 13 July 2024
I find Dodo lying under a parked pickup truck and manage to give him his eye drops again. In the park, I come across Daria, Maisha, and Sharkey. Pat is already working when I arrive at the shelter. She has cleaned several areas and is feeding the animals. I distribute the medications and clean the remaining areas. While Pat feeds the dogs in the back sections, I administer IVs to Lena and Hannah. Afterward, I do another round of cleaning. Safo spends a longer time than usual in the Dodger area today. Even though he often roams outside the shelter, I always find him unharmed.
Sunday, 14 July 2024
I think about Tiny every day and wonder if I should search for her again. Over the years, I've lost so many dogs and eventually come to terms with their loss. But Tiny's disappearance continues to trouble me, even though she went missing six weeks ago. As soon as the opportunity arises, I will search for her again.
Like yesterday morning, I find Dodo lying under a parked car and administer eye drops. It seems the treatment is finally starting to work. At the shelter, I follow my usual routine of distributing medication and then cleaning. After feeding, I administer the infusions. Lena and Hannah are still in fairly good condition.
Monday, 15 July 2024
It rained in the morning, so I could only get to the shelter by noon. The house dogs and those in the double-gate area handled the rain well. While I was busy cleaning the house and its surroundings, the rain started again. As it turned into a steady downpour, I distributed the medications and administered the infusions.
In the light rain, I then cleaned the rear areas, let Safo into the shelter, and began feeding the dogs. The dogs in the rear areas had taken refuge in the salas and stayed dry. After another round of cleaning, I disposed of the waste and left the dogs, who had already settled down to rest.
Tuesday, 16 July 2024
This morning, Pat and Claudia are back at the shelter taking care of the dogs. I am distributing medications when I get called outside because the landowner has shown up at the gate. He handed Gop an electricity bill for 3,492 Baht, which I was expected to pay, even though I had been transferring 600 Baht monthly for over a year without any issues. I arrange with the landowner to monitor the electricity usage for two weeks and then discuss it with him again.
Pat and Claudia take over feeding the dogs and cleaning the areas. Meanwhile, I am in Baan Amphur to pay Ba Bät and provide her with rice and dry food for the beach dogs. I find all the dogs in good condition, but I miss Kofi and Toto on our beach walk. However, I find them after returning the other dogs to the front hall area. Toto and Kofi live near the beach, so they are not always easy to spot.
After a quick visit to Beppe and Wolfgang on my way back and running some errands, I return to the shelter. As always, when Pat and Claudia take care of the dogs, they are in good spirits. I clean the areas once more and then administer infusions to Lena and Hannah.
Wednesday, 17 July 2024
Thursday, 18 July 2024
The day begins with a sad event. I find Hannah dead among the dogs in the house. Just yesterday, I hadn't noticed any deterioration in her condition. Although I knew I had to expect her passing soon, I didn't think it would happen so quickly.
After wrapping Hannah and placing her in the bed of the pickup truck, I start cleaning. Once I make sure that all the dogs and Lena are well, I feed them. Then I take Hannah to the NPW Clinic for cremation.
Later, I visit Beppe to deliver fish oil, Ferric, and a special shampoo, as one of his dogs has developed coat problems. In the late afternoon, I'm back at the shelter, cleaning the areas once more and then administering an IV to Lena. Lena's kidneys are less damaged than Hannah's were, and she hasn't shown any alarming symptoms so far.
Friday, 19 July 2024
I pick up dry food in the morning and first check on Lena at the shelter, who is doing well. In the drizzle, I clean the areas and dispose of the waste. The dogs in the back areas are also doing fine. I find Safo in the Dodger area. I start by feeding the dogs in the front areas and then work my way through the back areas. Finally, I administer the infusion to Lena.
Saturday, 20 July 2024
I have some work to do on the computer today, so I don't arrive at the shelter until Pat is already feeding the animals. Claudia and Dieter have already raised and secured the tilted sala in the Dodger area. They also brought new tubs, filled all the water containers, and cleaned the areas. After Pat, Claudia, and Dieter leave, I go through the areas once more to clean and dispose of the waste. Then, I administer the infusion to Lena. The dogs are already resting comfortably when I leave the shelter in the late afternoon.
Late in the evening, I meet Michael at Pong Park. Michael is worried about Masha, whom he hasn't seen for two nights. Tonight, only Darya shows up for feeding. Nick, whom I run into while searching for Masha, also tells me that he misses her.
Sunday, 21 July 2024
On the way to the shelter, I look for the Pong Park dogs but don't find any of them. This isn't immediately cause for concern since the dogs often hide during the day. However, this does not bolster my hope of finding Masha. Cleaning up the waste takes quite a bit of time today, and since the dogs were well-fed yesterday, I only distribute half portions. Only Carla and Cora, who are still growing, receive the usual amount. After disposing of the waste and refilling the drinking water in some areas, I give Lena her infusion.
Late in the evening, I'm back at Pong Park. Michael usually feeds the dogs around 10 PM. By that time, all the dogs usually gather, but unfortunately, I only find Daria in the parking lot, not Masha. I'm devastated. I can hardly bear all these losses. The worst part is knowing that in the future, I'll have to mourn so many more dogs.
Monday, 22 July 2024
This morning, I find only Randy in Pong Park. I search the entire area for Masha, but she remains missing. After picking up new dry food, I head to the shelter. First, I distribute the medications, then start the cleaning, followed by feeding the animals. In some areas, I refill the drinking water. I find Safo in the Dodger area. I hope this beautiful, healthy, friendly dog stays with me.
From the Elly area, I hear angry barking. I quickly run over and see a cobra confronting the dogs. Shorty seems to have learned his lesson and keeps a safe distance. With some effort, I manage to guide the cobra over the fence and outside. She, too, remains unharmed.
Tuesday, 23 July 2024
I had several errands to run in Pattaya this morning, so I only headed out to the dogs in the afternoon. At Pong Park, I found Daria, Randy, and Sharkey. Across the street, I administered eye drops to Dodo.
Pat and Claudia had already completed most of the main tasks in the morning. I went through all areas once more, cleaning up, removing several dry palm fronds, and disposing of the waste. All the dogs were well taken care of and peaceful. I found Safo in the Dodger area, where he seems to be spending more time lately. My last task was to administer saline solution to Lena. Lena's condition remains stable.
Wednesday, 24 July 2024
This morning, I returned to Pattaya to take care of some urgent errands. One of these was a visit to the workshop because my speedometer needed repair. In the early afternoon, I arrived at the shelter and, as usual, started by distributing medications. Afterward, I cleaned the house and all surrounding areas and refilled the drinking water. Once the dogs were fed, I did another round of cleaning and then administered the IV to Lena.
In the late afternoon, I went to Pong Park. I found Daria safe at her spot, but Masha was still missing. I also found Sharkey and Randy. Sharkey hasn't been feeling well for the past two days, so I'll continue to monitor his condition.
Thursday, 25 July 2024
This morning, I found only Randy in the park. Randy is healthy and lively. At the shelter, I first clean the front areas and then distribute the medications. After that, I work my way through the back areas. In the Dodger area, I find Safo, who seems to be spending more time there now.
I constantly worry about him when he’s outside the shelter. Over the years of taking care of dogs, I’ve lost more than 150, leaving wounds on my soul that only time can heal. However, today all the dogs are healthy and lively. The only exceptions are Kylie, who suffers from likely incurable skin issues, and Lena, who is fighting for her life.
After feeding, I go through all the areas again to clean up and dispose of the waste. Next, I take care of Lena. The dogs have already settled down by the time I leave, and I hope to find them all healthy and lively again tomorrow.
Friday, 26 July 2024
In the mornings, I buy dry food and then start cleaning the shelter in the drizzle. The dogs are in good spirits, and I find Safo in the Dodger area again. However, I'm feeling down. I still often think about how Tiny might be doing, and the loss of Masha continues to weigh on me. At least Lena's condition remains stable. During the infusion, though, she looks at me as if she knows her days are numbered. After feeding the dogs, I go through all the areas once more and then dispose of the waste.
Saturday, 27 July 2024
Pat is feeding the dogs at the shelter today, cleaning the areas, and refreshing the drinking water. She had already left the shelter by the time I arrived in the afternoon. The three dogs at the shelter gate are still being cared for by Gop. I distribute the medications, clean the areas, dispose of the waste, and then administer Lena's infusion.
Sunday, 28 July 2024
Monday, 29 July 2024
Saek informs me in the morning that a female dog has hidden with her ten one-month-old puppies in the bushes behind the Mabprachan 7/11. I check the overgrown area, and although I can hear the puppies, I can't see them. The mother dog is reportedly being cared for by local residents. Since I'm in the area almost daily, I'll keep an eye on the situation.
In the quiet hope of finding Masha again, I search for the dogs in Pong Park. However, I only find Daria, Sharkey, Bella, and Randy. At the shelter, I first distribute the medications and then clean the areas. After disposing of the waste, I feed the dogs. They are in a calm mood, so I can leave them in the afternoon without worry.
Tuesday, 30 July 2024
Yesterday, I was attacked by extremely aggressive wasps in the big sala area. They stung me multiple times on my right hand and head. By last night, my hand had become severely swollen, extending up to my elbow. I hope medication will soon help me forget this incident.
When I arrived at the shelter, Pat and Claudia were already at work. Pat had sprayed the wasp nest, so hopefully, the dogs will be spared from stings. The considerable swelling in my right hand, hinders me from cleaning up the waste. Therefore, after taking Luna to Dr. Oi, I let the two women continue working on their own.
Luna’s blood test results revealed an inflammation and a reduced number of red blood cells. Additionally, her kidney appears to be damaged, with a creatinine level of 2.1. I will need to administer infusions to Luna and treat her with Carprofen and Ferric. Moreover, I will give her Prednisolone for three days to address a swelling in her upper chest area.
In the late afternoon, I returned to the shelter. Pat and Claudia had taken good care of the dogs again. I went through the areas once more, cleaning and disposing of waste. Afterward, I administered the infusion to Lena.
Wednesday, 31 July 2024
In the mornings, I am the first to distribute the medications. Luna receives Prednisolone for three days, after which I will continue her treatment. I then proceed to clean the areas and dispose of the waste. Shaina, who wandered into Kenji's area yesterday, seems to have learned her lesson and stayed in her own area today. In some sections, I refill the drinking water and then begin feeding, starting in the house and then in the double-gate area.
Safo has developed a new habit. He now jumps onto the roof of a sala that stands close to the fence, and it seems he can't find his way down. So, I help him get back to the ground. Shortly after, he's back on the roof again. I wonder how he manages it since I couldn't do it myself. He likely climbs up the inner fence, as he does when he tries to get outside. After giving Lena her infusion, I leave the dogs, most of whom have already settled down to rest.
Thursday, 1 August 2024
In the morning, I am at the shelter, distributing medication and cleaning the areas. After that, I feed the dogs. Once again, I find Safo on the roof of the sala, and since he seems to be able to climb up but not back down, I have to help him down again.
In the early afternoon, I meet Claudia, Dieter, and two of their friends at Wat Amparahm. They had never been there before and were quite pleased to find Victor, Dahn, and Talib in good condition. I also introduced them to the other dogs near the boats and on the beach. All the dogs seemed to be doing well, and when I asked the boat people, they confirmed that an unknown veterinarian continues to care for them. Ba Bät is also still taking care of the dogs. I provide her with dry food and rice for the next two weeks. Back at the shelter, I clean the areas again and then give Lena her infusion.
Friday, 2 August 2024
Saturday, 3 August 2024
Pat is taking care of the dogs this morning. I am at the shelter in the afternoon to clean the areas after distributing the medications. Then, I administer the infusion to Lena.
Sunday, 4 August 2024
It’s raining this morning, so I don’t arrive at the shelter until late in the morning. First, I check on Woody and find him in the field next to the shelter. I offer to let him into the double-gate area, but he prefers to stay outside. Food and water are available to him and the three other dogs near the shelter gate. After cleaning the house and double-gate areas, I distribute the medications. Then, I clean the back areas, dispose of the waste, and let Safo into the Dodger area.
Since there is a lot of waste to clean up today, the dogs receive only half of their usual portion of food. After another round of cleaning, I administer the infusion to Lena. Lena is still active but has lost some weight.
Saturday, 10 August 2024
Last night, Michael pointed out a male dog to me that he occasionally takes care of. Booboo has an injury in the genital area. I looked at the dog but couldn't clearly see what was wrong with Booboo in the dark. That's why, this morning, I went first thing to the place where he was lying. I found Booboo under a pickup truck. Although the dog seems friendly, I decided not to try to pull him out.
When I arrived at the shelter, Claudia and Martin were already working. I saw Woody in the area next to the shelter, and he came up to me trustingly. It seems he has accepted his new surroundings. In the shelter, I distributed the medication to Lena and Luna and then left Claudia and Martin in charge of the dogs' care.
In the afternoon, I checked on Booboo again, but he was out roaming. I arranged with the people who look after him to pick him up early tomorrow. The shelter dogs were well cared for by Claudia and Martin, so I only needed to clean up the areas once more. Afterward, I administered the infusion to Lena.
Sunday, 11 August 2024
This morning, I saw Booboo again lying under a pickup truck in front of the beverage shop, but the shop was closed, so I had to go to the shelter without accomplishing anything. The four dogs were waiting for me at the shelter gate, including Woody, who was doing well. At the shelter, I first cleaned the front areas and distributed the medication. Then I cleaned the back areas and fed the dogs. Before leaving, I gave Lena her infusion.
I returned to the shop where Booboo was lying. The shop employees helped load Booboo into a cage on the pickup truck, and I took him to the clinic. In the evening, I received the blood test results. Booboo’s platelet count was extremely low, so he couldn't be operated on. Only after a two-week treatment with Doxycycline and Ferric supplements can we try again. Since administering medication on-site will be challenging, I'll take Booboo into the shelter tomorrow.
Monday, 12 August 2024
This morning, the first thing I did was go to the clinic to pick up Booboo. Weighing in at 33 kg, Booboo is quite a hefty guy, but he’s a sweetheart of a dog. With some effort, I managed to load him into the crate on the pickup truck and then headed to the shelter with him. To be safe, I locked the other dogs in the double-gate area in the TVT section before carrying Booboo through the gate. After he took a few minutes to get accustomed to his new surroundings, I let the other dogs out to meet him. The introductions went smoothly, and Booboo relaxed. I showed him around the TVT station and then left him with the other dogs so I could start cleaning.
After cleaning the house and the surrounding area, I cleaned the double-gate area. The dogs there had already accepted Booboo’s presence. Since Booboo wouldn’t take his Doxy tablets in wet food, I had to gently place them in his mouth. This can be tricky with dogs who aren't familiar with me, but Booboo was so gentle and didn’t bite my hand. After I finished cleaning the back areas, I fed the dogs. Booboo wasn’t interested in the dry food either, but I’m not worried because he’s in good condition.
In the afternoon, I went through the areas again, cleaning and disposing of waste. The dogs were in a peaceful mood. At the end of the day at the shelter, I administered Ferric to Booboo and Luna, and then gave Lena her infusion.
Tuesday, 13 August 2024
Woody comes running with Noona and Soda as I arrive at the shelter gate this morning. The three dogs get along well now, and Woody is enjoying his new life of freedom. In the double-gate area, my first glance is at Booboo. He is doing well and is happy to see me. While I'm busy cleaning the front areas, Pat arrives. Pat starts cleaning the house and feeding the animals. Meanwhile, I move through the back areas, cleaning and refilling water. Safo doesn't seem to go outside as often now, because I see him spending more time in the Dodger area.
Pat takes over, and I go home until the afternoon. Back at the shelter, I go through the areas cleaning again, distribute the evening medications, and then give Lena her infusion.
Wednesday, 14 August 2024
In front of the gate, I see Woody with Soda and Noona again. As I enter the double-gate area, my first glance goes to Booboo. Although he hasn't made contact with the dogs there yet, he seems content and is gradually settling in. The dogs in the house area are in good spirits. Order has been established, and no incidents are expected. I distribute the medications, clean the house and the house area, and then the double-gate area.
Later, I take Diudiu to the clinic. She has continued to lose weight, so I want to have her blood tested again. Fortunately, the results are quite encouraging. Diudiu only needs to continue receiving Doxy and Ferric. Back at the shelter, I clean the rear areas and then feed the dogs. Booboo gets a meal with rice. Afterward, I go through the areas again to dispose of the waste. Finally, I distribute the evening medications and administer the infusion to Lena.
Thursday, 15 August 2024
As I did yesterday, I find Woody with Soda and Noona in front of the shelter gate. In the double-gated area, Booboo greets me along with the other dogs. I start by cleaning the house area, administering the morning medications, and then move on to clean the double-gated area with the TVT station. Afterward, I clean the back areas and dispose of the waste.
In the afternoon, after feeding the dogs, I head to Wat Amparahm to check on the dogs there. I provide Ba Bät with rice and dry food. All the dogs are in good condition. During a walk on the beach, I come across Kofi and Toto, and they both appear to be doing well. Back at the shelter, I clean the areas once more, distribute the evening medications, and administer Lena's infusion.
Friday, 16 August 2024
In the morning, I check on Sharkey in Pong Park. Sharkey hasn’t been himself for the past few days, so Michael asked me to have his blood tested. However, Sharkey remains nowhere to be found. At the shelter gate, I run into Woody with Noona and Soda. They have food and are doing well. Pat is already working at the shelter. I first distribute the medication to Diudiu, Luna, and Booboo, then start cleaning the back areas.
In the afternoon, I finally find Sharkey and take him to Dr. Oi. The blood test shows mild anemia, which can be treated with Ferric. Back at the shelter with Sharkey, I clean the front areas and distribute the evening medications. After that, I give Lena her infusion. As night falls, I leave the shelter dogs and bring Sharkey back to the park. There, I encounter Randy and Daria, but not Bella.
Saturday, 17 August 2024
In the morning, I once again search for Sharkey but have no luck. At the shelter, I start by cleaning the front areas and then distribute the medication. After cleaning the back areas, I feed the animals. Booboo gets rice again, as he refuses to eat the dry food.
In the early afternoon, I return to the shelter, distribute the evening medications, and do another round of cleaning. Afterward, I administer Lena’s IV infusion. On my way back, I finally find Sharkey in the park and give him Ferric. This treatment needs to be continued once daily for a month.
Sunday, 18 August 2024
I check on the dogs at Pong Park and give Dodo his eye drops. Claudia and Martin are already working at the shelter when I arrive. Claudia is feeding the animals, and Martin is cleaning the areas. I distribute the medications and give Lena her infusion. In the evening, I’m back at Pong Park to administer Ferric to Sharkey.
Monday, 19 August 2024
This morning, I gave Dodo eye drops again and checked on the park dogs, but I only saw Sharkey and Randy. After cleaning the front areas of the shelter and distributing medications, a pickup truck from the Soi Dog Foundation arrived with some of Lek's shelter dogs on board, and Woody was loaded up.
I then cleaned the back areas and fed the dogs. Later in the afternoon, after distributing the evening medications and administering an IV to Lena, the Soi Dog Foundation pickup returned, bringing back the sterilized dogs. Woody immediately disappeared into the darkness. Tomorrow morning, I'll start his Doxycycline treatment.
On my way home, I stopped at Pong Park and gave Dodo another dose of eye drops. I found Daria, Randy, and Bella, but not Sharkey. Later in the evening, I met Michael while he was feeding the park dogs. Sharkey was among them, and I managed to slip the Ferric tablet down his throat.
Tuesday, 20 August 2024
Pat is already at the shelter when I arrive in the morning. I hand out the medication, including to the male dog next door who was neutered along with Woody yesterday. He also gets a large serving of rice. However, I search in vain for Woody. While Pat feeds the dogs, I clean the back areas and dispose of the waste.
In the afternoon, I'm back at the shelter. Pat has already taken good care of the dogs. I go through all the areas again, cleaning thoroughly, and then distribute the evening medications. While doing so, I come across Woody, who’s wandering around the neighboring yard. I administer Doxy to him as well. It looks like he's also recovered well from the procedure. Back at the shelter, I give Lena her IV and then say goodbye to the dogs for the day. Later that evening, I run into Sharkey at the park and give him Ferric.
Wednesday, 21 August 2024
In the morning, I was at Ulrich and Ursi's place in Baan Amphur. They had asked me to arrange the cremation of one of their dogs who passed away yesterday. Back in Pong, I gave Dodo his eye drops again and then went looking for Sharkey, but I couldn't find him.
At the shelter, I distributed the medications to Diudiu, Luna, and Booboo. Booboo seems to be settling in more and is starting to trust me. Outside the shelter, I found Woody and Sahm, the new arrival from next door. Both dogs had been neutered, and I gave them each a dose of Doxycycline. They're still dealing with some swelling in their scrotum, but that's almost normal after neutering. I’ll need to give them Doxycycline daily until the swelling goes down, which usually happens within a week.
After finishing the cleaning, I fed the dogs and administered Lena's IV. Late in the evening, I met Michael while feeding the dogs at Pong Park. I gave Sharkey his daily dose of Ferric.
Thursday, 22 August 2024
First thing in the morning, I give all the patients their respective medications. After that, I clean the areas and then feed the dogs. Finally, I take care of Lena. She is still quite active and cooperates very well during the infusions.
Friday, 23 August 2024
When I arrive at the shelter, Pat is already at work. I start by distributing the medications, including to Sahm and Woody. Both dogs are doing well, and I can see that their swelling is subsiding. While Pat handles the feeding, I clean the areas and dispose of the waste. All the dogs are in good spirits. I find Safo in the Dodger area; it seems he's limiting his outings now. After Pat finishes feeding, I administer Lena's infusion. Although she has lost some weight, she’s eating well and remains alert and agile. Later in the evening, I meet Michael in the park and administer Ferric to Sharkey.
Saturday, 24 August 2024
After cleaning the house and the front areas, I distribute the medication to Sahm and Woody, the two dogs outside the gate, and then to Diudiu, Luna, and Booboo. Once I've cleaned the back areas and disposed of the waste, I feed the dogs. During a heavy downpour, I sit with them, something I usually don't have time for. To finish, I administer Lena's infusion.
Sunday, 25 August 2024
Claudia and Martin are at the shelter today, handling almost all the tasks. In the morning, I only need to distribute the medications. In the afternoon, I'll do a final cleaning of the areas and then administer the infusion to Lena.
Monday, 26 August 2024
First thing in the morning, I distribute the medications. Woody’s recovery from his neutering is progressing normally, but Sahm is still suffering from significant swelling in his scrotum. Because of this, I consult Dr. Beam in the afternoon, who recommends an examination. I’ll try to get Sahm to the clinic tomorrow. After administering medication to all the shelter dogs, I clean the areas. Then, I feed them. There is still plenty of drinking water available. I dispose of the waste and then give Lena her infusion.
Tuesday, 27 August 2024
Pat is already working at the shelter when I arrive there in the morning. I first check on the dogs in front of the shelter and find Woody, Soda, Noona, and Sahm. With the help of a resident from the house next to the shelter, I manage to get Sahm into the cage on the pickup truck. At the clinic, Sahm is examined. Dr. Beam suspects internal bleeding due to a low platelet count. Sahm is cooperative, so he can stay at the clinic for now.
Back at the shelter, I distribute the medications, including to Woody outside, and then start cleaning while Pat feeds the animals. After giving Lena her IV treatment, we finish our work in the late afternoon. This was Pat's last shift for now, as she's heading back to Australia for six weeks.
In the evening, I receive Sahm's blood test results, which aren't as bad as expected. His platelet count is slightly low, and there's a mild infection, but neither is serious. Tomorrow, I'll discuss with the doctors what the next steps for Sahm should be.
Wednesday, 28 August 2024
Thursday, 29 August 2024
I buy dry food and store the bags in the kitchen. After that, I distribute the medications and then clean the areas. Once I've fed the dogs, I pick up Sahm from the clinic. Dr. Oi doesn't believe another hospital stay is necessary since the scrotal swelling has gone down. I can continue the treatment on-site. I've developed a good rapport with Sahm, so it's not too difficult to temporarily place him in the back unit of the TVT station, where he'll share the space with Satya. After feeding Sahm, I give him his first dose of Prednisolone. He'll need to take Prednisolone for another three days and Doxycycline for two weeks.
I then go through all the areas again for a final clean and administer an infusion to Lena. Sahm isn’t too happy about his confinement. If that’s still the case tomorrow, I’ll consider treating him outside for the next few days, which likely won’t be an issue since Sahm is loyal to the area and trusts me.
Late in the evening, I meet Michael at Pong Park for the nightly feeding. A new dog was supposed to show up, but it doesn’t appear. All the other dogs are present.
Friday, 30 August 2024
Sahm spent the night safely in the back unit of the TVT station. After administering medication to him and the other patients, I take him outside. For the next few days, I'll be able to give him his medications there as well. Sahm is visibly happy to be back in his usual spot. After cleaning the areas and refilling the water, I feed the dogs. I then go through the areas for a final clean and leave in the afternoon after giving Lena her infusion.
Saturday, 31 August 2024
I pick up some dry food and head to the shelter. At the shelter gate, I meet Sahm and Woody and give them their medications. Both dogs are on the mend. Inside the shelter, I first distribute medication to Booboo, Diudiu, and Luna. Afterward, I clean the areas and refill water where needed. Once the feeding is done, I clean again and then administer an IV to Lena.
Sunday, 1 September 2024
Claudia and Martin are already working at the shelter when I arrive there in the morning. I distribute the medications and then head to the temple. As I do every two weeks, I provide dry food and rice to Ba Bät, then check on the dogs. I find Victor, Dahn, and Talib near the temple hall, Deva in her enclosure, and the beach dogs by the boats. All the dogs appear to be well cared for. However, I can't find Kofi and Toto at the beach.
Back in Pattaya, I pick up Lai from the clinic. Returning her proves to be a bit challenging since Khun Kung has moved, and her previous place is in ruins. I drive Lai to Khun Kung’s new home, but it doesn't look any better, and no one is around. I ask Khun Kung to pick up Lai, but she never shows up.
Meanwhile, Sylvia from the neighboring village arrives. Sylvia knows Lai, so I hand over the medications and instruct her on how to administer them. In the afternoon, I return to the shelter. Claudia and Dieter have taken good care of the dogs. I make another round through the areas, cleaning up the waste. Afterward, I administer an IV to Lena.
Monday, 2 September 2024
This morning, I finally get in touch with Khun Kung. Lai is with her. I arrange to meet Sylvia in the afternoon so that we can get the medications to Khun Kung. Later, I meet Nick at the Mabprachan Reservoir. Nick has found a dog in need of treatment there. We find Bobo with his caretaker, a destitute woman living in a shabby hut near the reservoir. Bobo is a sweet dog and has no issues being taken to Dr. Oi. Bobo’s blood is tested, and aside from the usual deviations from ideal values, the results aren’t too bad. However, distemper can’t be ruled out, so a PCR test is needed. The results will be available in three days. For now, Bobo will stay at the clinic.
Afterward, I go to Pattaya International Hospital to get my eye and foot issues diagnosed. A cataract and three degenerated vertebrae are found. There’s not much that can be done, and I’ll have to live with it. I’m advised to avoid heavy labor and stress, but that’s likely not going to be possible.
In the late afternoon, I finally get to the dogs at the shelter. Before nightfall, I try to clean as much as I can, then distribute the medications and administer an IV to Lena. Today marks Lena’s 154th IV treatment. I hope we can continue with another 150. In the evening, I contact Sylvia. Tomorrow, we’ll try to find Lai to give her the medication.
Tuesday, 3 September 2024
On my way to the shelter, it starts to rain heavily and persistently. As the rain begins to let up, I first administer the medications, including to Sahm and Woody outside the gate, and then start cleaning. The shelter is partially flooded, with the entire double-gate area submerged. In the back areas, I occasionally sink into the mud. However, the dogs have all found dry spots. Shaina, though, has wandered into Kenji’s area again, but I’m able to guide her back without much trouble.
After feeding the dogs and ensuring they’re all full and content, I drive, completely soaked, to the clinic to check on Bobo. Dr. Oi wants to discharge him, but I manage to get her to agree to keep him for one more day. Given the terrible weather, I don’t want to return Bobo to the reservoir, where he’d be exposed to the rain with little protection. I also can’t bring him to the shelter, as he might be distemper-positive.
On top of everything else, I discover a leak in the roof of the pickup. Water has dripped in and pooled on the driver’s seat. So, early in the afternoon, I head to the workshop. Khun Yao has time and seals the leak with silicone. Hopefully, that solves the problem for now.
Back in Pong, I meet with Sylvia, and we drive to the spot where Khun Kung plans to settle. She has constructed a tent-like shelter, with Lai lying in front of it. It’s heartbreaking to see the conditions in which impoverished Thais have to live. I explain to Khun Kung how to administer the prednisolone and eye drops. Lai’s affected eye already looks a bit better. Sylvia will also help take care of Lai.
I then return to the shelter, clean the areas, and administer an IV to Lena. There is still water in several spots, and the ground is completely soaked. Hopefully, the weather will be better tomorrow so the ground can dry out. On my way back, I stop by Pong Park. All the dogs are there. Sharkey is back to his old self, but I continue administering Ferric to him.
Wednesday, 4 September 2024
Claudia is already working at the shelter when I arrive in the morning. I distribute medication to Booboo, Diudiu, Luna, Woody, and Sahm. Sahm has now developed trust in me, just as Booboo did earlier, so administering the medication is no longer an issue. Woody has always had a good relationship with me. While Claudia cleans the house and the front areas and prepares the feeding, I clean the back areas, dispose of the waste and administer die IV to Lena. I leave the shelter a bit earlier, while Claudia finishes feeding in the back areas as well.
Thursday, 5 September 2024
On my way to the shelter, I check on the dogs in Pong Park but don’t see any of them. At the shelter gate, I’m greeted by Sahm, who has become very friendly with me. I begin my shelter work by cleaning the front areas. Afterward, I distribute the medications, including to Sahm and Woody outside the gate. Then I move on to cleaning the back areas and disposing of the waste. Once the dogs are fed, I administer Lena’s IV treatment.
Friday, 6 September 2024
I meet Sahm at the shelter gate and Woody on the grounds next to the shelter. Both dogs are receiving doxycycline. Today is Woody’s last dose, but Sahm’s treatment will continue for another week.
Inside the shelter, I clean the front areas and then start feeding the dogs. In between, I distribute medications and refresh the drinking water where needed. After cleaning the back areas and disposing of the waste, I give Lena her IV treatment.
Next, I meet with Dr. Oi to pick up Bobo. His distemper test came back negative, so I can house him at the shelter for further treatment. Dr. Beam informs me that starting now, he will sterilize up to ten dogs per month free of charge. I update Lek about this, as her shelter frequently has new arrivals. All the dogs I’m aware of have already been sterilized, except for Booboo and Bobo. However, their sterilization will be postponed for now.
Saturday, 7 September 2024
After cleaning the front areas and refreshing the drinking water, I distribute the medications. Then, I move on to clean the back areas and replace the water there as well. I let Bobo out of his kennel under supervision, but quickly realize that the household dogs aren't particularly friendly towards him. At least Bobo takes his medication and eats well. After feeding the rest of the dogs, I go through the areas again to clean and then give Lena her infusion.
On my way back, I stop by the park dogs. I see all of them—Sharkey, Bella, and Randy are enjoying themselves in the green spaces. Old Man is with them too, and he seems to be doing quite well. However, he still runs away from me.
Sunday, 8 September 2024
I arrive at the shelter early in the morning because Khun Nut signed up to mow the grass. The grass has already grown knee-high again. The dogs don’t mind, but picking up poop from the tall grass is a hassle. While Khun Nut gets to work, Claudia and Martin arrive.
I distribute the medications while they handle the organization, and then I take Booboo to see Dr. Oi. The results of the latest blood test require another two-week treatment with Doxycycline and Ferric before we can consider any further procedures. Booboo is cooperative during the drives and at the clinic. He’s truly a lovable companion.
To give Bobo more space, we move him to the bathroom area. From there, he still has visual contact with the main house, so he can gradually get used to the house dogs, and they to him.
Claudia and Martin finish up their work in the late afternoon, and shortly after, I head back to the shelter. On the way, I get caught in a heavy downpour. When I arrive, it’s still raining hard, so I can only unload the 120 kg of dry food into the double-gated area. I stash the six sacks temporarily in the two salas. Soaked to the bone, I decide to postpone the rest of the tasks until tomorrow morning.
Monday, 9 September 2024
Tuesday, 10 September 2024
I start by giving the medications to the shelter dogs and to Sahm outside the gate. Woody also stops by—he’s happy in his new environment and gets along well with his new friends. Booboo is also visibly comfortable. He has found his place in the front unit of the TVT station, but he often spends time outside in the double-gate area as well.
Bobo seems content with being moved to the bathing room. He’s eating well and is very friendly. However, I’m concerned about his health. Due to his obvious brain damage, he shows severe motor dysfunction and sometimes completely collapses.
After cleaning all the areas and disposing of the waste, I feed the dogs. After a break, I return to the shelter in the afternoon. I clean the areas again and then rake the freshly cut grass in the yard. It’s quite labor-intensive, and it will take me several days to finish throughout the entire shelter. I then distribute the evening medications and give Lena her IV treatment.
Wednesday, 11 September 2024
Claudia is already working at the shelter when I arrive there around noon. She has cleaned the front areas and started feeding the animals. I distribute the medications, including to Sahm outside. Bobo seems to be quite comfortable in the bathing room. He's friendly and approachable. Booboo acts like he's been with us forever. It's always a joy for me to hold this big guy in my arms.
While Claudia feeds the animals and refreshes their water, I clean the back areas and dispose of the waste. Afterward, I give Lena her IV, then continue raking grass at the house area and disposing of it in the waste pit. Once Claudia has left, I administer the evening medications.
Thursday, 12 September 2024
I see Sahm lying next to the shelter gate. By now, he feels completely familiar to me, and I feel responsible for his well-being. In the double-gate area, the dogs greet me in good spirits. Booboo has also become totally familiar to me. Inside the house, the greeting is as lively as ever, especially from Paco, the rascal, who demands his share of attention. Bobo is resting peacefully in the bathing room—such a sweetheart. I sit with him for a while.
After this emotional interlude, it’s back to the hard work. Once I’ve cleaned the house, the yard, and the TVT area, I distribute the morning medications. Then, I clean the back areas, taking time to sit with the dogs in each area. They need my companionship, and I need theirs, too. There’s still drinking water in all areas, so all that’s left is to distribute the dry food.
In the late afternoon, I administer Lena’s IV and then hand out the evening medications. After another round of cleaning the house and the double-gate area, I say goodbye to the dogs, some of whom have already settled in for the night.
Friday, 13 September 2024
My first task this morning is administering the medication. Afterward, I go through all areas to clean. Once I’ve raked up the freshly mown grass in front of the house, I start feeding the dogs in both the house and double-gate areas. Then, I feed the dogs in the rear sections.
After a short break, I distribute the evening medications and then give Lena her infusion. Bobo remains in the bathroom. Under my supervision, I temporarily leave the door to the house area open so the house dogs can gradually get used to his presence.
Saturday, 14 September 2024
In the morning, the first thing I do is distribute the medications again. All the patients take their tablets without objection. Sahm is lying outside by the gate and seems to want to stay there. Bobo is in the bathroom, looking content. Booboo has fully integrated with the double-gate area dogs and now often rests in the TVT station.
After cleaning the house, the house area, and the double-gate area with the TVT station, I feed the dogs. In some areas, I need to refresh the drinking water. I also clean the back areas. Then I rake up the cut grass in the front section of the large sala area and dispose of it in the waste pit.
The busy day ends with giving Lena her IV and the evening medications to Lena, Sahm, Bobo, Booboo, and Diudiu. Billy, Merlin, Kylie, and Jake continue to receive eye drops.
Sunday, 15 September 2024
Claudia and Martin are already working at the shelter when I arrive in the morning. My first priority is checking on my patients: Sahm, Booboo, and Bobo. Sahm is comfortable at the neighboring house, Booboo is in good spirits, and Bobo seems content as well.
After distributing the medication, I head over to the temple dogs. I find all of them either in or around the temple hall, and by the boats on the beach. They’re well-fed, and even the minor skin issues some of them had are gradually clearing up. I spot Deva in her pen by the temple wall. With Victor, Talib, and Dahn, I take a walk along the beach. At the far end of the shore, I notice Kofi and Toto are missing. However, I find them lying a bit away from the beach under a huge tree.
After running some errands in town, I return to the shelter. Claudia informs me that the water supply has stopped because the tank is empty. It seems the pump has failed. I arrange for a repairman to come and locate the issue. In the late afternoon, I clean all the areas and dispose of the waste. Claudia and Martin have taken good care of the dogs. Finally, I distribute the evening medications and administer an IV to Lena.
Monday, 16 September 2024
As usual every morning, I greet the dogs at the gate or on the street in front of the open space. Woody is now getting along great with Noona, Soda, and Mee. However, Sahm still keeps his distance from the trio. In the double-gate area, Booboo and Lizzy always greet me with lots of enthusiasm. Khiaow, Tinka, Chip, and Luna are a bit more reserved, while I usually find Satya and Jake in the back section of the TVT station. The gate to the house area is often blocked by Pinky, Carla, and Cora, so I have to clear a path to get in. The other house-area dogs are usually scattered inside. My first glance is always towards Bobo. His condition remains the same, and he seems content. Under my supervision, I leave the door to the bathroom, where he stays, open. By now, the house-area dogs have grown accustomed to his presence, though Bobo still doesn't want to come out.
After distributing the morning medications, I clean the house, the house area, and the double-gate section. I refresh the drinking water and then move on to clean the back areas. Claudia had mentioned to me that Beppe had injured his paw. I discover that he's ripped a nail from his left front paw, likely during a scuffle with Tashi at the closed gate. He resists my attempts to treat him, so I’ll have to take him to Dr. Oi tomorrow.
After disposing of the waste, feeding the dogs, and refilling water containers in some areas, I leave the dogs in the early afternoon. Thanks to yesterday’s downpour, water has once again leaked inside the vehicle. Khun Yao had previously tried to seal the leak in the roof, but it’s clear the repair wasn’t completely successful. So I head back to the workshop, where Khun Yao makes another attempt to fix the problem. Back at the shelter, I clean all the areas again, then distribute the evening medications and finally administer Lena’s infusion.
Tuesday, 17 September 2024
I start my day by distributing the morning medications and then move on to cleaning. Afterward, I feed the animals. Back inside the house area, I hear unsettling barking from the TVT station and see that Jake is being attacked by several dogs. I quickly step in between them, so Jake doesn't get hurt too badly. He only ends up with two minor bite wounds, which I treat. I can't figure out what triggered the attack since the dogs have been living together for months, and Booboo, the most recent addition, is completely peaceful.
I close the gate to the back TVT unit, where Jake is now resting with Satya. Since all the dogs are taken care of, I can finally tend to myself. I've been struggling with an ear infection for a few days now. The doctor in Pong only found some redness in the ear canal and gave me ear drops.
In the afternoon, I return to the shelter. I first go through all the areas again, cleaning up the waste. I notice that Norbu has injured his snout. I give him Carprofen, as well as to Beppe, who is still suffering from his torn paw nail. After that, I distribute the evening medications to the other patients and administer Lena’s infusion.
Wednesday, 18 September 2024
Claudia is already working at the shelter when I arrive. I distribute the morning medications, clean the back areas, and dispose of the waste. Meanwhile, Claudia feeds the dogs. Bobo doesn’t want to get up anymore. He either stays in his bed or lies on the floor. But he’s still eating enough and remains very sweet.
Norbu has injured his mouth. He and Paco can’t help but snarl at each other through the closed metal gate. Dr. Beam treats Norbu, and he’ll need to take Prednisolone and Doxycycline for a week.
By the time I get back to the shelter with Norbu, Claudia has already left. Just as I return him to the big sala area, it starts pouring rain. Soaked to the skin, I give Bobo his evening meds and then administer Lena’s IV. After the rain lets up, Norbu gets his first dose of medication.
Unfortunately, I have to admit that Khun Yao’s efforts to seal the leak in the pickup’s roof didn’t work. That means I’ll have to go back to him first thing in the morning. A more thorough repair will probably be unavoidable.
Friday, 20 September 2024
I arrived at the shelter early in the morning to get started on the work, as Chang Wai had said he would be coming by. Claudia and Martin have generously agreed to contribute 6,000 Baht towards building new salas. I asked Chang Wai to construct three metal-framed salas. Over time, we will need to replace the remaining wooden-framed salas with metal ones as well. The wooden structures are starting to rot, and since they often stand in water during the rainy season, they won’t last much longer. Chang Wai took measurements and will begin work next Monday.
I continued with the cleaning, distributed the morning medications, and then fed the animals after cleaning up the waste. While I was working in the back areas, I heard some unsettling barking and quickly ran to the section with the three salas, where Buffy, Venus, and Sita are housed. The door to the adjacent area, where Nuri, Shaina, Tibor, and Tarik stay, is always open. Tibor and Tarik occasionally cross over into Buffy’s area, but there had never been any issues among the dogs. This time, however, I found Buffy being attacked. I immediately stepped between the dogs, and thankfully nothing serious happened. For now, I’ll need to keep the door between the two sections closed.
After placing an IV for Lena later in the afternoon, I left the dogs. Lena’s condition remains unchanged. Bobo’s condition is stable, but still concerning. He doesn’t have the strength to stand, so I have to feed him while he’s lying down. In the evening, I received confirmation from the Struebi family that they will take Bobo in on Monday.
Saturday, 21 September 2024
I arrive at the shelter early in the morning, clean all areas, and dispose of the waste. Claudia and Martin arrive to take over the remaining tasks, and I administer the medications. Victor has set himself up in the bathroom.
We load Booboo into the cage on the pick-up truck. Dr. Oi runs a blood test, and although not all the results are ideal, the surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. Booboo behaves perfectly at the clinic—he’s such a sweetheart. Bobo seems content in his cage, has eaten, and is acting normally with me. Nick and his mother will take him home tomorrow in the early afternoon.
After a quick stop at the shelter, I head out to pick up metal sheets for the new salas we’re building. Chang Wai is scheduled to arrive early Tuesday. On my way back to the shelter, heavy rain begins, so I pause my trip and head home for a while. In the meantime, Claudia and Martin have taken good care of the dogs.
In the early evening, I return to the shelter, store the metal sheets, distribute the evening medications, and then give Lena her IV. I haven't seen Woody all day, and I’m very worried something might have happened to him. One of the workers living near the shelter tells me that Woody has disappeared. I ask Gop to look for him tomorrow.
Monday, 23 September 2024
Gop calls me in the morning to let me know that Woody has reappeared. I’m extremely relieved to find him safe and sound on the neighboring property. I had been very worried, especially since dogs in the neighborhood were poisoned yesterday.
With a somewhat lighter heart, I distribute the medications and then begin the hard work of cleaning. All the dogs are doing well, and Victor is patiently spending his time on a cot in the bathing room.
In the early afternoon, I head to the clinic and wait for Cindy and Nick, who arrive shortly after me. Bobo goes in with them. We’re all hoping he will recover. Booboo has already had surgery and seems to have handled it well, but he will need to stay in the clinic for five more days. A tissue sample has been sent for testing, and we should have the results in about three days.
Back at the shelter, I feed the animals, do another round of cleaning, and dispose of the waste. Afterward, I administer Lena’s daily IV treatment again.
Tuesday, 24 September 2024
I arrive at the shelter very early today because Chang Wai said he’d be there at 8 a.m. He’s bringing two helpers and the materials, while I’m already busy with cleaning. Chang Wai has been a tremendous help to me for years, and one of his helpers has been to the shelter a few times as well. The second helper also makes a great impression. All three workers get along well with the dogs, which is not a given, since many Thais are afraid of stray or shelter dogs.
While the workers carry the materials to the back areas, I check on the dogs. Most of them are familiar with Chang Wai and are behaving. While the workers begin building the salas (small open pavilions), I distribute the medication and continue cleaning from section to section.
Around midday, the workers take a break, I settle the bill for the materials, and then head to the clinic to check on Booboo. Dr. Oi tells me that his healing process is going as expected. However, the tissue sample results won’t be available for a few more days. Booboo will need to stay at the clinic for another five days anyway, and so far, he’s doing very well.
Back at the shelter, I feed the dogs outside the gate, with Woody among them. Then it’s time to feed the house dogs, followed by the dogs in the TVT station. I’ve locked them in there so the workers can move in and out freely. After that, I feed the dogs in the back areas.
I sit down in the section with Sita, Buffy, and Venus, where the workers are building the salas. Sita always gets a bit anxious when strangers are in her area, so I try to calm her down. Buffy injured herself yesterday in a scuffle with Nuri, Tarik, and Tibor. She has a wound on the inside of her left hind leg. I tried to take her to Dr. Oi today, but it didn’t work out. I’m hoping to manage it tomorrow with Claudia’s help. For now, I’m treating her with Prednisolone and Doxycycline.
In the late afternoon, the workers finish up for the day. I do another round of cleaning, then give Lena her infusion. The work will continue early tomorrow morning.
Wednesday, 25 September 2024
The workers resumed their tasks at 8:00 this morning. They are installing a new exterior door, so supplies no longer have to be carried through the double-gate area to enter the house. In the meantime, I distribute the medications, clean up the feces, and then feed the animals.
In the early afternoon, a sudden downpour surprises us, flooding the entire double-gate area. The work has to be paused for an hour. Once the door installation is finished, Chang Wai and his helper Nam lay a new water line to make it easier to provide drinking water to the double-gate area. Afterward, the workers replace several damaged metal sheets in Kenji's area and make minor repairs to two gates.
Later in the evening, I visit the Struebi family to check on Bobo. Bobo has his own little bed and seems to feel safe and comfortable. However, he still cannot stand up on his own.
It rained heavily again overnight, leaving puddles in the shelter and the ground completely soaked. However, the dogs handled the rain showers well. Venus and Sita have already settled into the new corner sala. After distributing the medication, cleaning the areas, and disposing of the waste, I feed the dogs. The dogs outside the gate also get their portions.
Around midday, I let the dogs rest and head into town. Both my computer and my phone have issues. The computer is being repaired, but the phone is beyond saving. I'm forced to buy a new secondhand phone.
Later, I visit Khun Yao. The pickup truck’s roof is still leaking. If the leak isn't fixed, the ongoing rainy weather could cause serious problems. I’ll visit Khun Yao again tomorrow morning. I can't afford to have the pickup out of commission.
Back at the shelter, I find that the rest area is flooded. Water is seeping up from the ground because the building doesn’t have a basement. After dealing with the flood, I clean all the areas again, distribute the evening medications, and then give Lena her infusion.
I now frequently use the new direct access to the house area. The dogs have already adjusted to the new arrangement. My first check is on Buffy, who is housed in one of the indoor kennels. She’s not happy there, but she’ll have to be patient for the next few days since I need to take her to the clinic every other day to have her bandages changed. Victor, on the other hand, is handling his situation much better.
After confirming that the other house residents are also doing well, I start cleaning the house, the house area, and the double-gate area. Then I distribute the morning medications and clean the back areas. After that, I feed the dogs in the front areas first, and then the ones in the back areas.
I then start removing old wood from some areas. I’ll have to get rid of more old wood tomorrow. Afterward, I take broken metal sheets to a scrap dealer. Finally, in the late afternoon, I distribute the evening medications and give Lena her infusion.
Tuesday, 1 October 2024
This morning, I was up early with the shelter dogs and first checked on Buffy and Victor. Victor patiently endures his situation, but Buffy would rather escape hers. After making sure all the other house dogs are well, I distribute the morning medications and start cleaning. Then I feed the dogs and leave them alone.
Today is the day for visiting the temple dogs again. At the rice shop, I buy rice for Ba Baet and also provide her with a bag of dry food. In front of the temple gate, I look for Pema, who I missed during my last visit. I still don’t see her, but a woman who takes care of the market dogs assures me that Pema is doing fine. In the temple hall, I miss Talib and Dahn. However, I find them further down by the beach. Kofi and Toto are there too. All the dogs are in good condition; according to one of the people living on the beach, the doctor is still taking care of them.
Back at the shelter, I go through the areas cleaning again, distribute the evening medications, and administer the infusion to Lena.
Wednesday, 2 October 2024
I’m in the city early in the morning to get my computer repaired, which failed me again yesterday. After that, I head to the shelter and start cleaning the house, the house area, and the double-gate area. Victor is still patiently enduring his confinement in the bathroom. After distributing the medications, I also clean the back areas.
Later, I visit Dr. Oi to pick up Booboo. Unfortunately, the tissue test from the removed growth came back positive for cancer. According to Dr. Oi, there’s a certain risk that metastases have already formed. Booboo’s condition needs to be closely monitored even after his return to his spot. To continue his medical treatment, however, he’ll stay at the shelter for another week. Since Booboo has to wear a collar, I temporarily place him in the front unit of the TVT station.
Afterward, I start by feeding the dogs in the front areas, then those in the back. The busy day at the shelter ends with administering Lena’s infusion.
In the late afternoon, I visit Bobo. Cindy and Nick are taking wonderful care of him. Bobo still can’t stand up, but he’s receiving comprehensive treatment and seems to be feeling much better. He’s a very special dog who deserves all our affection.
Friday, 4 October 2024
In the morning, I first check on Booboo and let him out of the TVT unit into the double-gated area. He’s still wearing his collar and is doing well, all things considered. I then start cleaning the front areas and distribute the medications afterward. Victor, who has handled his isolation very well so far, is gradually becoming restless. To make things a little easier for him, I remove his collar. His appointment with Dr. Oi is tomorrow, as is Buffy’s. Both dogs, along with Booboo, are still on medication. The administration of doxycycline to Diudiu, Luna, and Sahm has been completed. However, I will continue treating them with ferric supplements for a while longer.
Early in the afternoon, dark clouds start rolling in again, so I have to hurry with the feeding. I’m in the process of taking care of the dogs in the back areas when a downpour begins. I take shelter in a sala and wait out the rain with Tashi, Lilly, and Coco. Once the rain lets up, I finish feeding and then do another round of cleaning through the areas. Back at the house, I administer the infusion to Lena.
Saturday, 5 October 2024
After finishing a dentist appointment, I arrive at the shelter in the late morning. After making rounds through all the areas, I begin cleaning the house, the house area, and the double gate area. Then I distribute the medications and clean the back areas. Afterward, I store 120 kg of dry food, feed the animals, go through the areas for another round of cleaning, and finally administer Lena’s infusion. I have to be prepared to lose her any day now, as she has continued to lose weight.
Sunday, 6 October 2024
Claudia and Dieter are already feeding the dogs outside the gate when I arrive at the shelter in the morning. While the two of them start working, I distribute the morning medications and then head to Dr. Oi with Victor. Victor’s bandages are removed, and he is officially discharged as healed. So, I take him to the temple to reunite him with Talib and Dahn.
Since I brought Victor from the temple, Dahn hasn’t dared to approach the temple hall because she was attacked by the beach dogs. I bring her back from the beach to the hall. With Victor by her side, she’s now able to stand her ground against the other dogs again. She, Talib, and the other beach dogs are in good condition. To my surprise, I find four puppies, about six weeks old, lying under one of the boats. Apparently, one of the beach females is their mother. I thought I had all the female dogs spayed. Now we have to take care of these four puppies too.
Claudia and Dieter gave me the afternoon off, and my planned visit in the early evening has to be canceled because of the persistent rain. However, the dogs are well cared for, and I can give Lena her IV treatment tomorrow morning.
Monday, 7 October 2024
At the shelter gate, I am greeted in the morning by Noona, Sahm, and Woody. Off to the side, I also see Mee and Soda. All the dogs outside are doing well. After the customary greeting from the house dogs, I notice that half the ceiling in the house's rest area has collapsed. I clear away the debris and ask Chang Wai to take a look at the damage. He will do so tomorrow afternoon.
After cleaning the rest area and disposing of part of the ceiling, I clean the house area and the double-gate area. Carla seems to be settling there now. Every time I cleaned the area, she used to follow me back into the house area, but for the past two days, she hasn’t followed my request to return. However, Carla can come back into the house area whenever she feels like it.
Booboo is doing well and will be able to return to his spot in three days. After giving him and Buffy their medications, I administer Lena's infusion and then clean the back areas. Buffy was supposed to go to the clinic for another check-up, but she has consistently evaded me. Her wound isn’t concerning, and maybe with Pat's help, I’ll manage to catch her. Pat is back from Australia and has planned to visit the shelter tomorrow.
While feeding the dogs in the back areas, I notice that Shaina has once again wandered into the Kenji area. She climbs the chain-link fence and jumps over the two-meter-high metal sheets. However, since the Kenji area is not secured with chain-link fencing, she can’t find her way back into her own area. I can't see why she keeps going into Kenji’s area, as she doesn’t seem to have any obvious issues with Nuri, Tarik, or Tibor. Kenji doesn’t seem to mind Shaina’s presence, and as I leave his area, both are peacefully lying in the sala. Tomorrow morning, I’ll reassess the new dynamic with Pat.
Tuesday, 8 October 2024
I’ve already cleaned the front areas by the time Pat arrives with cooked rice and canned food. While I distribute the morning medications, Pat starts feeding the dogs. I then move on to clean the back areas. Shaina is lying with Kenji together in the sala. Both now have their own beds. I hope Shaina will settle in with Kenji.
While Pat feeds the dogs in the back areas and refreshes their water, I begin disposing of the dismantled salas. Chang Wai arrives early in the afternoon to inspect the ceiling damage in the house’s resting room. He’ll be installing a new ceiling there on Thursday.
While Pat takes care of the dogs in the farthest areas, I make a quick trip home and return to the shelter later in the afternoon. After completing another round of cleaning, I administer Lena’s IV and then leave the dogs for the night.
Wednesday, 9 October 2024
On my way to the shelter, I make a quick stop to check on Dang. In early July, Dang had part of his right hind leg amputated and has since been lovingly cared for by local residents in their front yard. Dang comes up to me and lets me pet him. He’s in good shape.
Afterward, I check on the Pong Park dogs. However, I only find Daria, Randy, Rocco, and Dodo. Thanks to Michael's daily treatment, Dodo’s eye discharge has significantly improved.
At the shelter gate, I’m greeted by Woody, Sahm, and Noona. Soda and Mee, whom I spot from a distance, also seem to be doing well. Inside the shelter, I’m met with the usual excited welcome from the house dogs, along with plenty of dog poop. I distribute the medication and then get started on the much-dreaded cleaning. After tidying up the double gate area, I work my way through the back sections.
Buffy is more approachable now that her collar is off, and her leg wound is healing normally. Shaina seems to approve of being moved to Kenji’s area. She’s resting in the Sala on one of the new beds that Claudia and Dieter provided for several of the dogs. Safo appears to have finally lost interest in climbing over the fence. I see him all the time now in the Dodger area.
The weather is very unpredictable today, so the feeding takes place in a light drizzle. As a result, I’ll have to postpone clearing out the remaining old wood until tomorrow. The day ends with giving Lena her infusion. I hope Lena can hang on for a while longer, but she’s looking quite weak.
Thursday, 10 October 2024
I arrived at the shelter very early this morning because Chang Wai was scheduled to come at 8 a.m. After finishing the cleaning and distributing the medications, Chang Wai showed up with his helper and a truck delivering several drywall panels. While they removed the remnants of the old ceiling and installed a new one, I stayed inside with the dogs to make sure they didn't disturb the workers.
Shortly after the construction work finished in the early afternoon, it started to rain heavily. I fed the dogs inside the house, and once the rain let up, I also fed the dogs in the double-gate area as well as the five dogs outside the gate. In a light drizzle, I then wrapped up feeding the dogs in the back areas.
Shaina still seems comfortable with Kenji. Both of them have their own little beds, which they’ve taken to. After finishing the feeding rounds, I did another quick cleanup of the areas and then gave Lena her IV treatment.
Friday, 11 October 2024
This morning, I’m picking up 120 kg of dry food and then heading to the shelter. Pat is already at work. I’ll store the bags and then take Booboo back to his owners. Booboo is absolutely overjoyed and is warmly welcomed by his owners and their neighbors.
Back at the shelter, I clean the areas while Pat continues feeding. Then, I remove more old wood from the Tashi section. Fortunately, the neighbors inform me that they can make use of it.
While Pat continues feeding, I quickly head home and check on the Pong dogs as well. Then I return to the shelter in the late afternoon. I clean the areas again and then give Lena her IV.
Saturday, 12 October 2024
On the way to the shelter, I check on Booboo, whom I find in his usual spot under a parked pickup truck. Booboo comes out and enjoys being thoroughly petted by me; he's doing well. Since Khun Nut is scheduled to mow the grass, I arrive at the shelter fairly early this morning and start with the cleaning. It's been raining every day now, but we're lucky with the weather until the early afternoon, allowing Khun Nut to mow all areas. Khun Nut is experienced with shelterdogs, so while he mows, I can feed the dogs.
After he leaves, I go through the areas again to clean up. Shortly after, a heavy thunderstorm rolls in, flooding parts of the shelter. As it pours down, I sit with the dogs, and when the rain starts to ease, I administer Lena’s IV. Afterward, I make another round through all the areas. All the dogs handled the storm just fine. Kenji and Shaina are still getting along well.
Sunday, 13 October 2024
Claudia and Martin are already working at the shelter when I arrive in the morning. I take Diudiu to Dr. Oi for a blood test. During the previous test six weeks ago, Diudiu's levels were slightly outside the normal range but not concerning. Since then, she’s been treated with Doxycycline and Ferric supplements. However, since her condition hadn’t improved, I felt a follow-up test was necessary. By evening, the results were still pending.
Back at the shelter with Diudiu, Claudia is busy feeding the animals while Martin is cleaning and refilling the water bowls. Chang Wai arrives to take measurements for doors that will be installed in three sliding gates separating different areas. He will fabricate the doors at his place and install them in two days.
While Claudia and Martin finish their tasks, I clean up waste and clear some brush. Afterward, I administer Lena's IV treatment.
Monday, 14 October 2024
In the morning, I start by cleaning the house, the area around it, and the double-gate section, then move on to the back areas after distributing the medications. Once again, Carla is drawn to the dogs in the double-gate section. The coexistence between Kenji and Shaina continues to go well. While cleaning, I leave the door between the Nuri area and the Venus area open. The dogs get along fine, but just to be safe, I close the door again after cleaning both areas. I’ve just finished feeding when a heavy downpour begins. As the rain pours, I administer Lena’s infusion.
Tuesday, 15 October 2024
I'm at the shelter early in the morning. A few moments later, Chang Wai arrives with his assistant. They bring prefabricated doors that are to be installed in three sliding gates. The sliding gates between the sections are cumbersome to open, so the new doors are intended to make access easier. While the installation work begins, Pat arrives and starts preparing to feed the animals.
Since the sliding gates have to be partially opened during the door installations, I, and temporarily Pat as well, have to keep an eye on the dogs to make sure they don’t leave their respective areas. The work progresses smoothly and is completed after four hours, just before the midday downpour starts. Pat finishes the feeding, and I go through the areas again to clean up. After that, I give out the medications and then administer the infusion to Lena.
Wednesday, 16 October 2024
On the way to the shelter, it starts to rain again. I manage to get inside the house fairly dry. Together with the dogs, I wait out the first heavy downpour before I begin cleaning the house. Since the house doesn’t have a basement, water collects in the resting area during heavy rain, forcing me to constantly keep the floor somewhat dry; otherwise, the kitchen would be flooded.
However, the double-door area is flooded, though the TVT station has remained dry. The dogs in the salas are also safe; they are accustomed to floods and handle them well.
After distributing the medication, I clean the remaining areas. There are deep puddles everywhere, so I can only work in rubber boots. Fortunately, all the dogs in the back areas have also come through the deluge unscathed.
After the cleaning, I begin feeding the dogs in the house despite the light drizzle and then take care of the dogs in the other areas. Finally, Lena receives her infusion again.
Thursday, 17 October 2024
Early this morning, I’m at the shelter, starting with the cleaning of all areas. After that, I feed the dogs, including those outside the gate. I then head to the Pong pet store to pick up dry food.
On my way to the temple, I stop at the rice store near the entrance and drop off a sack of dry food. I also order 30 kg of rice for Ba Bät. Once again, I miss Pema. At the front hall, I’m greeted by Victor, Dahn, and Talib, and nearby, I spot Akira, Rika, Yoko, Taro, and Jingo. However, Deva is nowhere to be found. The spot where she usually lies is empty. By the boats, though, all the dogs are present, and I find Toto and Kofi further down on the beach. All the dogs look healthy and appear to be well-fed.
Back at the shelter, I complete another round of cleaning and then administer Lena’s IV before the afternoon rain starts.
Friday, 18 October 2024
Pat has already started working by the time I arrive at the shelter in the morning. She has cleaned the front areas and is beginning to feed the animals. I give Lena her daily medication and then get to work cleaning the back areas. While I am working in the area of Oscar and Merlin, a heavy downpour begins. I take shelter with the dogs in one of the salas and resume cleaning the other back areas once the rain eases up.
As I dispose of the waste and give Lena her IV infusion, Pat finishes feeding the animals in the back. The rain continues throughout our work, leaving the shelter covered in puddles. Even the house's resting area starts to flood as water pushes up through the floor. I try to keep the floors as dry as possible to prevent the water from reaching the kitchen.
Pat drives off, and I set to cleaning the areas again in the steady rain. By late afternoon, I leave the dogs, who are well-fed and resting comfortably.
Saturday, 19 October 2024
The weather is nice this morning, but it has been like this lately until noon. Since dark clouds roll in by early afternoon at the latest, I need to hurry with my tasks. After distributing the morning medications, I start cleaning the house and the areas around it. Water has accumulated again in the resting room of the house, but it hasn’t made its way into the kitchen, so all the dogs have stayed dry.
Carla frequently moves from the house area to the double-gate area, where she is welcome. Dotty, Jake, and Satya mostly stay in the TVT station. The outdoor areas have dried out again, which makes cleaning them easier. The dogs seem to have weathered yesterday’s rain without any issues.
After I dispose of the waste, I begin feeding the dogs. Pat has stored a container of rice food in the refrigerator, which I feed to the dogs in the kitchen. I also give Diudiu canned food. The other dogs have to settle for dry food. I administer an infusion to Lena, and after completing another round of cleaning, the afternoon rain begins. I leave the dogs, who have already settled down for a rest.
Sunday, 20 October 2024
On my way to the shelter, I stop by to see Booboo. He looks good and enjoys my affection. Afterward, I buy some dry food and head to the shelter in fairly decent weather. In front of the gate, I spot Sahm, and Noona, Woody, Soda, and Mee also greet me. All the dogs inside are in good spirits, so I can start cleaning without much worry.
Once I’ve worked through all the areas and cleared out the waste, I begin feeding. I still have some concerns about whether Shaina will stay in Kenji’s area, but I see her lying comfortably in the sala, with Kenji resting in the damp sand beside her.
After a short break, I return to the shelter in the afternoon, clean again, and then give Lena her infusion. She and Diudiu get a portion of canned food from me afterward. Both dogs are quite frail, and I hope the extra feedings will help them gain some weight.
Monday, 21 October 2024
Pat is already at work when I arrive at the shelter in the morning. She’s already fed the dogs outside and cleaned the front areas. I give Lena her morning medication and then start cleaning and refreshing the drinking water in the back areas. Kenji and Shaina continue to get along well. After disposing of the waste, I administer Lena's IV. With Pat finishing up the remaining tasks, I leave the shelter a little earlier today.
Tuesday, 22 October 2024
This morning, I had urgent errands in town and didn't get to the shelter until late morning. As I was feeding the dogs, dark clouds started gathering again, and just as I finished cleaning the front areas, it began to rain heavily. I took the opportunity to give Lena her IV and continued cleaning once the rain let up.
By the time I made it through all the areas, we were hit by recurring showers, which I waited out with the dogs in the salas. Despite the puddles that formed everywhere and the flooding in the double-gate area, all the dogs stayed dry.
Wednesday, 23 October 2024
This morning, we’re lucky to enjoy a rare blue sky. The dogs are in good spirits, so I quickly get to work cleaning all the areas. Afterward, I feed them and do a second round of cleaning. In between, Lena gets her infusion. By early afternoon, after I've disposed of the waste, the sky starts clouding over again, and light rain begins to fall. Since all the tasks are done, I get to wrap up a bit earlier today.
Thursday, 24 October 2024
Today's weather is pleasant and stays clear throughout the day. I clean the areas, refill water bowls, and dispose of waste, then proceed with feeding. Lena and Diudiu receive additional canned food, and Lena also gets her infusion. I follow up with another round of cleaning in the areas. On my way back, I stop by to check on Booboo, then head to Pong Park, where I encounter Daria, Meefoo, Randy, Rico, and a new male dog I hadn’t seen before.
Friday, 25 October 2024
Pat is already hard at work when I arrive at the shelter. The good weather, which graces us again today, makes everything much easier. I give Lena her morning medication and then clean all areas. Pat continues with feeding while I head home for a few hours.
In the late afternoon, I'm back at the shelter, doing another round of cleaning and waste disposal. Afterward, I administer Lena's infusion. Pat has taken excellent care of the dogs; by the time I leave, a few of them have already settled in to rest. On my way home, I stop by at Pong Park, where I’m pleased to find Randy, Bella, Sharkey, and Daria all safe and sound.
Saturday, 26 October 2024
Today is a routine day, focused on cleaning, feeding, and refilling the water containers. Lena and Diudiu also get canned food, and as usual, Lena receives her daily IV afterward.
Chang Wai is scheduled to come by early tomorrow to go over the plans for expanding the double-gate area into the main section.
Sunday, 27 October 2024
I start early in the morning by cleaning the shelter areas. Around nine, Chang Wai arrives. I go over the plan with him to expand the double-gate area into the main section of the shelter. He tells me what metal sheets and wire mesh we’ll need and mentions he’ll begin work on Tuesday.
Not long after Chang Wai leaves, Claudia and Martin arrive at the shelter with food and supplies for the dogs. Once I’ve finished cleaning, I head to Thai Watsadu to pick up the materials for the new section we’re building.
Afterward, I swing by Leo’s place. He offered to take more photos of the dogs. Just as we’re on our way back to the shelter, Claudia calls to let me know Khiaow and Lizzy got into a scuffle, and Khiaow was badly hurt. When I arrive, I check the wound—it definitely needs treatment. Fortunately, Lizzy is almost unscathed.
Claudia and Martin have taken good care of the dogs, so I take Leo with me to Dr. Oi’s clinic, where Khiaow receives initial treatment. She’ll stay overnight at the clinic, and Leo and I head back to the shelter.
At the shelter, we go area by area as Leo takes photos of the dogs. I give Lena her IV, and then we store the metal sheets and wire mesh in the double-gate area. Doing that, I notice a swelling on Sam’s throat. I’ll have to bring him to Dr. Oi tomorrow as well.
On our way to Leo’s house, we come across Drago and three puppies. The dogs are being cared for, but at least the female puppies should be spayed soon. I hope I’ll be able to arrange it in the near future.
Monday, 28 October 2024
After cleaning the front areas, I take Sahm on board and drive him to Dr. Oi. Sahm stays calm during treatment for the swelling, and then we return to the shelter together. I settle him into one of the kennels and administer Prednisolone and Doxy. The swelling in his throat should reduce enough within three days for him to be released back outside. However, Khiaow will need to stay in the clinic a few more days for daily care of her head wound.
I feed Sahm, Diudiu, Lena, and Kylie rice food leftover from yesterday, while the other dogs make do with dry food. After feeding, I clean the front areas again and then the back. In some spots, I refill the drinking water. At the end of the day, I give Lena her daily infusion once more. Although she's still eating well, she’s become very thin. But her eyes are still bright, which makes me hopeful she’ll be with us a little longer.
Tuesday, 29 October 2024
Since Chang Wai and his assistant are scheduled to start constructing a new section in the house area, I arrive at the shelter early to clean all areas thoroughly. Chang Wai brings additional materials, and the workers begin setting up the new section.
Meanwhile, Claudia arrives, followed shortly by Pat, who has postponed her flight to Australia. I move the dogs in the double-gated area into the TVT station and keep an eye on the dogs in the house area so the workers can proceed without interruption. During this time, Claudia and Pat begin feeding the animals.
Just before noon, I head out to pick up planks for the Sala flooring and to pay the bill for more materials. On the way, I visit Khiaow at Dr. Oi’s clinic. Khiaow is still heavily bandaged but seems comfortable enough in the cage.
Back at the shelter, I leave the care of the dogs to Claudia and Pat, head home for a few hours, and complete some computer work. When I return, the workers are finishing up for the day, and Claudia and Pat have already left. I go through the areas again, cleaning up, and then administer Lena’s IV.
Wednesday, 30 October 2024
I'm back at the shelter early in the morning and start with the cleaning. Chang Wai and his helper arrive shortly after and continue their work. Their first task this morning is to cut down the two dead palms and a few other dead trees. Once that's done, the workers begin building the sala and setting up the new section in the house area. Whenever I have a moment and don't need to manage the dogs, I continue cleaning, feed them, and give Lena her IV. By late afternoon, the work has progressed enough that the fences can be installed tomorrow.
Thursday, 31 October 2024
Early in the morning, I'm back at the shelter, starting the cleaning routine. After finishing about half the areas, Chang Wai and his assistant arrive to continue building the new section while I check on the house dogs.
By midday, they’ve made enough progress that I can head to the clinic to pick up Khiaow. Her wound has been stitched, but I’ll need to take her back to Dr. Oi in a few days for a follow-up. I place Khiaow in the back unit of the TVT station with Satya and Jake, closing the door to prevent any renewed conflict with Lizzy. The other dogs in the double-gate area need to stay at the TVT station until the new section, which will be accessible from the double-gate area, is finished.
I return to complete the cleaning and then start feeding. Sahm and the outdoor dogs are also tended to, and Lena and Diudiu get an extra serving of canned food. Once I’ve collected all the food containers, I administer Lena’s IV.
The chain-link fences in the new area are being covered with metal sheets to prevent the house dogs and those in the double-gate area from seeing each other. However, I realize we’re short by two sheets. For now, we’ll cover the remaining gap with some older sheets on hand. Chang Wai will replace them with new ones next week after I pick them up.
The new area is now ready to be used, so I let a few dogs from the double-gate area explore it. We’ll see which dogs settle there best—they even have a new Sala to use.
In the evening, Chris sends me an update video of Bobo. The treatment seems to be making good progress.
Friday, 1 November 2024
Pat is already working at the shelter when I arrive in the morning. I unload 120 kg of dry food, and then give Lena, Khiaow, and Sahm their morning medication. I leave the rest of the tasks to Pat and head to the temple. I deliver another 20 kg of dry food and 40 kg of rice for Ba Bät.
I see Pema again, but I miss Deva; her shelter within the temple grounds has been removed. Even after a thorough search, I can’t find her. All the other dogs are accounted for and in good condition, including Kofi and Toto, who greet me on our walk along the beach.
After handling some urgent errands in town, I return to the shelter. Pat has done a great job taking care of the dogs. I go through all areas once more to tidy up, then dispose of the waste in the pit behind the shelter.
The dogs in the double-gate area have free access to the new section, though they don’t seem to be using it yet. Khiaow will need to stay in the back unit of the TVT station for a few more days, but she has company with Jake and Satya.
Saturday, 2 November 2024
Usually, the five outside dogs greet me at the gate, but today I miss seeing Soda, and she doesn’t show up in the afternoon either. Inside the shelter, all the dogs are doing well except for Lena. The dogs in the double-gate area are gradually exploring and claiming their newly expanded space. After distributing the morning medications, I start cleaning the front areas and then work through all the other sections.
Once I’ve cleared out the waste, I feed the dogs. Afterward, Lena receives her infusion. She’s managed to hold on for seven months now, though she’s continued to lose weight. Her eyes are still clear, but I don’t expect she has much time left.
Sunday, 3 November 2024
Upon arriving at the shelter, I notice that Soda is missing again. She doesn’t come out even when I call for her. Woody, Mee, and Noona are also nowhere to be seen. I find Sahm in the yard of the neighboring house. Claudia and Martin are already busy with their tasks and let me know I'm free for the morning. On my way home, I stop by to check on Booboo, who is doing well.
After finishing several writing tasks, I head back to the shelter. I spot Soda and all the other missing dogs in the area next to the shelter. Claudia and Martin have once again taken great care of the dogs and thoroughly cleaned the house and surrounding areas. After walking through each section and disposing of the waste, I administer Khioaw's medication and give Lena her IV fluids.
Monday, 4 November 2024
This morning, I found all five dogs safe and sound in front of the shelter gate. After greeting the dogs inside, I distributed the medications and got started on the cleaning. In the double-gate area, it seems that Khiaow and Lizzy are getting along again. This is likely because Khiaow is still wearing a cone, and the dogs now have more room to move around each other.
After cleaning the back areas and disposing of the waste, I took Khiaow to Dr. Oi. A few of her stitches were removed, but those close to her left eye will need to stay in for another two days.
I brought Khiaow back to the double-gate area, then fed the dogs in the front areas and finally those in the back. Afterward, I went through all the areas once more to clean and took the waste to the pit behind the shelter.
After giving Khiaow her medication again, I administered Lena’s infusion. On my way home, I stopped by the dogs at Pong Park—they’re all doing well.
Tuesday, 5 November 2024
This morning, I pick up 120 kg of dry food and store the bags. After distributing the medications, I start the cleaning tasks and then dispose of the waste. The dogs are in good spirits—Kenji and Shaina are still getting along well. As clouds gather in the early afternoon, I have to hurry with feeding. It rains on and off, so I use the time to administer Lena’s infusion. Before leaving, I go through the areas one last time to make sure everything is clean.

Since Chang Wai had made arrangements, I was already at the shelter early in the morning. I distributed the medication and then began cleaning. Late in the morning, Chang Wai informed me that he wouldn’t be able to arrive until early afternoon. So, after finishing the cleaning, I went home for a break.
Back at the shelter, Chang Wai arrived with his helper. The workers replaced two metal sheets in the Amy area that had rusted through and moved a sala in the Oscar and Merlin area.
Once the work was completed, I fed the animals. Lena and Diudiu received extra canned food again. I then went through the areas once more, cleaning, before administering an infusion to Lena. She is getting weaker every day, and it seems like it won’t be long before I have to say goodbye to her.
Sunday, 10 November 2024
I’ll pick up dry food and then head to the shelter. Claudia and Martin are already hard at work. After putting the food away and distributing the medications to Khiaow and Lena, we move Khiaow to Ruby’s area. There had been a scuffle between Khiaow and Lizzy in the double-gate area, and the tension between the two dogs was still simmering. Ruby had been occupying a whole section, including a spacious corner sala, on her own for months, so we hope she’ll be able to get along with Khiaow. Ruby is a bit cranky at first, but since Khiaow doesn’t rise to the bait and happily settles into her new surroundings, things between the two dogs ease up after a while.
I leave the dogs’ care to Claudia and Martin, then return to the shelter in the afternoon. The first thing I do is check on Ruby and Khiaow. Ruby seems to be managing Khiaow’s presence, so let’s hope that continues. Khiaow is behaving cooperatively. Next, I go through all the areas, cleaning as I go. Claudia and Martin have already done the heavy lifting, so I just need to tidy up. Afterward, I dispose of the collected waste in the pit behind the shelter. As night falls, I give Lena her infusion and then say goodbye to the dogs, most of whom have already settled in for the night.
Monday, 11 November 2024
After inspecting the dogs in the house area, I head over to Pat's section to check if Ruby and Khiaow got along overnight. It seems they did, and I note that Ruby appears to be adjusting to her new roommate. Khiaow, as always, causes no issues—she’s cooperative and seems to approve of her relocation.
Feeling reassured, I proceed with distributing the medications and cleaning the areas. After disposing of the waste, I feed the dogs, giving Diudiu and Lena some extra canned food again. Once I’ve done a final clean sweep, I administer Lena’s infusion and then leave the dogs for the day.
Tuesday, 12 November 2024
In the morning, I go through all the areas to check that everything is in order. Ruby and Khiaow seem to be getting along better every day. Afterward, I clean the areas and refill the drinking water where needed. During feeding time, Lena and Diudiu get a serving of canned food.
After a midday break, I go through the areas again, cleaning and disposing of waste. Then, I give Lena her infusion. While just a few days ago she was able to jump down from the treatment table on her own, today I have to help her down. She grows weaker by the day, but she is still eating well.
Wednesday, 13 November 2024
Claudia and Martin are handling most of the work at the shelter today. By the time I arrive in the early afternoon, they've already cleaned the areas and refreshed the water in the tubs and drinking bowls. I start by distributing the medications, while Claudia finishes up the feeding.
Since Claudia will be traveling to Germany for a month and Pat won't return to work at the shelter until next week, I'll need to manage the shelter work on my own for the next few days. After Claudia and Martin leave, I go through the areas once more to clean up and dispose of the waste. Then, I administer the IV to Lena.
Thursday, 14 November 2024
Upon arriving at the shelter, I first check on the five dogs outside the gate—all are doing well. The dogs in the house area and double-gate section are also in good spirits. My first task is, as usual, to clean the house, the house area, and the double-gate section. After that, I distribute the medications and then start cleaning the back areas. Once I’ve cleared away any waste, I feed the dogs and do another round of cleaning. Finally, I administer Lena’s infusion.
Friday, 15 November 2024
After finishing the cleaning and distributing medications, I begin feeding the animals, starting in the front areas and then working my way through the back sections.
After administering Lena's IV, I head to Baan Amphur. I drop off a bag of dry food at the rice shop and purchase 30 kilograms of rice, which Ba Bät uses to feed the temple dogs. While at the market area, I look for Pema but can’t spot her. Deva is also nowhere to be found despite a thorough search. Since it’s been a month now without any sign of her, I may have to accept that she’s gone for good.
At the temple hall, I see only Victor; Dahn and Talib are nowhere in sight. The dogs near the boats are all accounted for. While walking along the beach, Dahn and Talib approach me, and Kofi and Toto also come to greet me. It seems Dahn and Talib now prefer staying near the beach. Talib follows Victor and me back to the temple hall, while Dahn chooses to stay on the shore.
On the way back, I stop to check on the dogs in Pong Park. The place is bustling with activity as the Thai are celebrating Loy Krathong, the annual Festival of Lights. I find Randy, Sharkey, Bella, and Daria in the open hall, while Dodo, Rico, and Bo are at their usual spots.
Saturday, 16 November 2024
In the morning, I pick up 120 kilograms of dry dog food and, upon arriving at the shelter, store the bags in the kitchen. After that, I get to work cleaning the various areas.
In Kenji’s section, I notice that Shaina is missing and immediately fear the worst. Unable to find her in the nearby area of the large sala, I quickly head to the section she previously shared with Nuri, Tarik, and Tibor. To my great relief, I find her there, safe and sound. How she ended up back there remains a mystery. I inspect the fences but find no gaps or openings. It seems Shaina must have somehow made her way through the large sala area and over the fences to return to her former section. I had hoped she would settle in with Kenji, but clearly, she has her own ideas.
Ruby seems to be getting along well with Khiaow now. Khiaow still feels comfortable in Ruby’s section.
Once I’ve cleaned all the areas and disposed of the waste, I begin feeding the dogs. Diudiu and Lena once again receive a portion of canned food alongside their dry food, while the other dogs have to make do with just the dry food. Everyone seems healthy and in good spirits.
As night falls, I administer an IV infusion to Lena. She has grown even thinner, and I must face the likelihood that her time is running out. However, she continues to take her medication and still eats the wet food I give her.
Sunday, 17 November 2024
In the morning, I’m greeted by the five dogs waiting outside the shelter gate. There’s still some dry food left for them. After cleaning the front areas, I distribute the medications and then move on to clean the back sections.
To my surprise, I find Shaina back in Kenji’s area. She seems to have figured out a way to move between the two sections, though how she manages it remains her little secret. All the other dogs are in their usual spots.
Once the cleaning is done, I dispose of the waste in the pit behind the shelter and start feeding the dogs. Lena and Diudiu once again get an extra portion of wet food. Finally, I administer Lena’s infusion.
Monday, 18 November 2024
After completing my morning rounds at the shelter, I begin the cleaning tasks. Shaina has settled herself back with Kenji, and Ruby and Khiaow now seem to be getting along quite well. I dispose of the waste and then start the feeding routine. Water only needs to be replenished in a few areas. The outdoor dogs are also cared for; Lena and Diudiu receiving additional canned food. Following another round of cleaning, I administer Lena's infusion.
Tuesday, 19 November 2024
Outside the gate, Sahm, Noona, and Woody greet me. There’s still food left for them. In the distance, I spot Mee, but Soda remains out of sight. In the house area, I find all the dogs safe and sound. Meanwhile, the dogs in the double-gate section have settled into the newly created space. Carla seems to have decided to stay there with them. Cora, on the other hand, doesn’t appear to be affected by the separation—she’s found new friends.
After distributing the medications, I clean the house, the house area, and the double-gate section, and refresh the drinking water. Then I move to the back areas, cleaning and refilling the water there as well. Feeding begins, as it does every morning, with canned food for Lena and Diudiu. Since I’ve noticed that Arkan sometimes gets overlooked during feeding, he now also receives some extra canned food. The other dogs have to make do with dry food.
After completing another cleaning round, I administer Lena’s infusion. For the past two days, I’ve had to lift her down from the treatment table—she’s grown so weak. Although she’s still eating reasonably well, she’s become completely emaciated, and I expect she’ll pass away in the next few days.
Wednesday, 20 November 2024
This morning, I only see Sahm by the gate; the other dogs remain out of sight. My first task is cleaning the front areas and the house. After that, I administer the medications and then clean the back areas as well. Once I’ve disposed of the waste and a few fallen palm fronds, I begin feeding the dogs. Lena, Diudiu, and Arkan get extra canned food.
All the dogs are in good spirits. Khiaow and Ruby continue to get along well, while Shaina and Kenji are inseparable. Safo occasionally climbs up the fence to peer outside but doesn’t seem inclined to leave his area. After another round of cleaning, I give Lena her infusion.
Thursday, 21 November 2024
The dogs outside the gate, as well as those inside the house and in the double-gate area, are in good spirits. This allows me to quickly get to work on cleaning after distributing their medications. After disposing of the waste and refilling drinking water in a few areas, I start feeding them. Lena, Diudiu, and Arkan each get an extra serving of canned food.
On my way home in the early afternoon, I check on Booboo and notice that his eyes are severely inflamed. I administer eye drops. Later in the afternoon, I return to the shelter. I clean all the areas and then give Lena her infusion.
Late in the evening, I check on Booboo again and apply another round of eye drops. I then run into Michael, who is feeding the park dogs. I also give Dodo eye drops, as his eyes are still not clean. Michael will take care of further applications.
Friday, 22 November 2024
Saturday, 23 November 2024
On my way to the shelter, I administer eye drops to Dodo and Booboo. At the shelter gate, I find only Sahm; there’s still food left for the dogs. Inside the house, my first concern is checking on Lena, and I’m relieved to find her still alive. I then get started on cleaning and dispose of the waste afterward.
Next, I give Lena, Diudiu, and Arkan a serving of canned food and begin feeding the other dogs. Diudiu and Arkan eat with enthusiasm, but Lena won’t touch her food—not even the cooked meat Pat left for her in the fridge. I fear that Lena’s time is running out. Using a syringe, I give her some water and then administer her IV infusion.
Afterward, I feed the dogs in the house, in the double-gate area, and finally the ones in the back sections. Following one last round of cleaning, I leave the shelter in the late afternoon, hoping to find Lena still alive tomorrow.
Sunday, 24 November 2024
In the morning, the first thing I do is administer eye drops to Dodo and Booboo. After that, I pick up dry food and, once I arrive at the shelter, store the sacks away. To my relief, Lena is still alive, but she’s now so weak she can barely stand. She refuses to eat anything I offer her. I syringe water into her mouth and clean her up.
Next, I clean all the areas thoroughly and then feed the dogs. Diudiu and Arkan once again get some extra canned food. Afterward, I clean up again, refill the drinking water, give Lena her IV infusion, and syringe more water into her.
Fearing she might pass away during the night, I decide to close the kitchen door. Usually, the house dogs have access to all the indoor spaces, but tonight, I think it’s best to let Lena rest undisturbed.
Monday, 25 November 2024
After administering eye drops to Dodo and Booboo this morning, my attention shifts to Lena. I find her lying lifeless on her cot. I carefully wrap her body and clean the cot. Once the medications have been distributed, I move on to the daily cleaning routine. After thoroughly cleaning all areas, I dispose of the waste along with some fallen palm fronds.
For feeding today, the dogs receive half their usual portion since I clearly overfed them yesterday. Once I’ve refreshed their drinking water, I load Lena’s remains onto the pick-up and take her to the NPW Clinic for cremation.
In the evening, Cindy sends me a few videos showing Bobo’s recovery progress. He’s moving much better now and seems to be enjoying life again.
Tuesday, 26 November 2024
In the morning, the first thing I do is check on Dodo and Booboo and administer their eye drops. By the time I arrive at the shelter, Pat is already hard at work. I get started on cleaning the areas and giving out eye drops while Pat handles the feeding. After disposing of the waste, I leave the shelter a bit earlier today, leaving Pat to finish the remaining tasks.
Wednesday, 27 November 2024
On the way to the shelter, I administer eye drops to Dodo and Booboo again. Dodo's eyes are looking much better already, while Booboo's right eye is still a bit red, but he's also improving.
In front of the shelter gate, I spot all five dogs, and the ones inside the house are doing well, too. I immediately start cleaning and then dispose of the waste in the pit behind the shelter.
For feeding, Diudiu and Arkan get some extra canned food again. Today, Jake also receives a portion of canned food mixed with rice. He's lost weight despite eating normally. Once Pat is back to handling feedings at the shelter, I'll take Jake to Dr. Oi for a blood test.
Thursday, 28 November 2024
This morning, I once again administer eye drops to Dodo and Booboo on my way to the shelter. At the gate, Sahm, Noona, and Woody greet me. The dogs in the house area are in good spirits. I immediately start the cleaning tasks and refill the water in several areas. For feeding, I give Diudiu, Arkan, and Zola an extra portion of canned food mixed with rice.
When I go to collect the bowls, a swarm of aggressive little wasps attacks me. I get stung multiple times—several of them on my face. However, I can’t locate a nest near the sala. Fortunately, the dogs seem unharmed. Not in the best mood, I finish the remaining tasks and head home a bit earlier.
Friday, 29 November 2024
After treating Dodo and Booboo with eye drops again, I’m helping Pat today, who has already taken care of most of the work at the shelter. All the dogs have been well cared for, leaving me with only the final task of cleaning the areas and disposing of the waste.
Saturday, 30 November 2024
Before heading to the shelter, I treat Dodo’s eyes again with eye drops. However, I don't find Booboo in front of the shop where he’s usually cared for. Even in the afternoon, my search for him is unsuccessful.
At the shelter gate, Noona, Woody, and Sahm greet me warmly. After welcoming the dogs inside the house and in the double-gate area, I start with the cleaning tasks. Once that’s done, I feed Diudiu, Jack, and Arkan a portion of canned food, followed by distributing dry food to the rest of the dogs.
Sunday, 1 December 2024
On my way to the shelter, I treat both Dodo and Booboo with eye drops again. At the shelter, I complete a round of cleaning, feed the dogs, and refill drinking water in several areas. Once all the dogs are well-cared for and content, I head to Wat Amparahm. There, I buy rice for Ba Bät and leave another sack of dry food for her.
I search for Pema again but can’t find her. However, I do come across Nero in the market area. Years ago, I brought Nero to the temple, but he settled at the temple market instead. I hadn’t seen him in months, so I’m delighted to see him again. Nero has aged and developed a vision issue in his right eye, but otherwise, he’s in good condition—like the other market dogs. Their well-being is likely thanks to Ba Bät and Noo, whom I meet while she’s feeding the dogs.
At the temple hall, Victor, Dahn, and Talib greet me enthusiastically, clearly overjoyed to see me. I also look for Deva again, but she remains out of sight. It seems unlikely she has died; perhaps someone took her in. All the other dogs along the temple wall and near the boats are doing well and appear healthy. At the beach, I come across Kofi and Toto. They, too, are in good condition and seem to be well cared for.
Monday, 2 December 2024
In the morning, I treat Dodo and Booboo with eye drops again. On my way back from the shelter, I come across Booboo once more and repeat the procedure. Booboo still trusts me completely, so administering the drops goes smoothly. The second treatment for Dodo is always handled by Michael in the evening.
I pick up dry food and store the bags at the shelter. During a quick walkthrough of all the areas, I make sure all the dogs are doing well. I then begin cleaning the house, the house area, and the double-gate area. Afterward, I clean the back sections and refill the water containers. Once the waste is disposed of, I feed the dogs in the house area, followed by those in the double-gate area. After feeding the dogs in the back sections, I do another round of cleaning in all areas. As darkness falls, most of the dogs have already settled down for the night.
Tuesday, 3 December 2024
As at the beginning of every month, I need to update my documentation, so I don’t head out until the afternoon. On my way to the shelter, I administer eye drops to Dodo and Booboo. Pat has taken good care of the shelter dogs, so all that’s left for me is to pick up and dispose of the waste. I continue to give eye drops to Jake, Merlin, and Nina. Since switching from Genta Oph to Dex Oph, all three dogs have shown improvement.
On my way back, I search in vain for Booboo, who is supposedly hanging around the nearby market. However, the only result of my visit is meeting another dog.
Wednesday, 4 December 2024
On my way to the shelter, I administer eye drops to Dodo and pick up 120 kg of dry food. Once again, I search for Booboo but come up empty. After storing the food, I clean the front areas and refresh the drinking water there. Then I move on to tackle the rear sections.
I’m still a bit unsure whether Shaina will stay with Kenji, but it seems she has now decided to settle there. Similarly, the relocation of Khiaow to Ruby's area appears to be a lasting success.
After cleaning up the waste, I start feeding the dogs in the main house area. Diudiu, Arkan, and Jack get additional canned food. Once I’ve fed the dogs in the back sections and outside the gate, I do another round of cleaning before leaving the dogs as night falls.
On my way home, I search for Booboo again but don’t spot him. Late at night, on my way to the Pong dogs, I finally catch Booboo outside the bottled water supply store. I manage to give him the eye drops. The store owner, who looks after Booboo, is still there, so I hand him a bottle of eye drops and ask him to administer the drops to Booboo three times a day.
Thursday, 5 December 2024
This morning, I’m heading straight to the shelter because Dodo’s eyes are looking better, and Michael will take care of him in the evening. Booboo is being cared for by his owners. At the shelter, as always, I start by cleaning the different areas, refilling the water, and then moving on to feeding the animals. After feeding, I clean up again, disposing of waste and fallen palm fronds.
Friday, 6 December 2024
Pat informs me in the morning that the water pump isn’t working. I head straight to the shelter and discover that the plug has been disconnected. I realize I forgot to reconnect the power to the pump yesterday afternoon after disconnecting it when I found a faucet in the Amy area had been left open. Once I restore the water supply, I clean the house and the double-gate area and refill the water containers. Meanwhile, Pat feeds the dogs in the back areas. With everything in order, I take the rest of the day off.
Saturday, 7 December 2024
At the shelter, the dogs greet me enthusiastically at the gate. All five are enjoying their freedom and are well cared for. The dogs inside the shelter are also in good spirits. I start with the cleaning, which takes several hours since Pat has generously provided for the dogs. In the afternoon, I feed the dogs. Diudiu, Arkan, and Jack each get an extra serving of canned food. After completing another round of cleaning and refilling several water containers, I wrap up the busy day. By then, the dogs have already settled down to rest.
Sunday, 8 December 2024
On my way to the shelter, I check on Booboo. His right eye is still a bit red, but the left one is looking better. Outside the shelter, Mee, Noona, and Woody are waiting. The house dogs are already eager for their breakfast.
First, as I do every morning, I administer eye drops to Billy, Kylie, and Jake, then move on to cleaning. The dogs in the back areas are also doing well and greet me excitedly.
After disposing of the waste and refilling the water containers, I begin feeding time. Once everyone has eaten, I gather the feeding trays and bowls, then make another round to tidy up the areas.
Billy sneaks back into the kitchen. While I let him slide this time, the other house dogs have to find a spot in the house area.
Monday, 9 December 2024
On the way to the shelter, I pick up some dry food. Upon arriving at the gate, I check on the dogs outside. They greet me cheerfully, though Soda is missing. The dogs inside the house and in the double-gate area are all doing well, so I get straight to cleaning. Afterward, I feed them, but today they only receive half their usual portions, as I clearly overfed them yesterday. Once I’ve refilled the water bowls, I leave the dogs for the day. Billy decides to settle down in the quiet room.
Tuesday, 10 December 2024
Pat is already at work when I arrive at the shelter. While she handles feeding and refilling the water bowls and tanks, I focus on cleaning and disposing of waste. Pat heads out while I finish the remaining tasks. I leave the dogs content and well-cared-for, resting peacefully.
Wednesday, 11 December 2024
This morning, I arrived at the shelter early because Will had scheduled a visit. After cleaning the front areas, I drove to Pong to pick him up and introduced him to the dogs in the house area. Will explained that he wanted to support me, so I took him to the Pong pet supply store, where he ordered 20 bags of dry food, promising to deliver them to the shelter as soon as possible.
Back at the shelter, I fed the dogs and then cleaned the back areas. Noticing that Jack has been losing weight, I started him on a Doxy/Ferric treatment. I plan to take him to see Dr. Oi at the earliest opportunity.
Thursday, 12 December 2024
This morning, my shelter work begins with cleaning the house, the house area, and the double-gate section. I then move on to the other sections, clearing out the waste. Feeding follows the usual routine: I first feed the dogs in the front areas, then move to those in the back.
In the early afternoon, I pick up Rene and Heidi in Pong, and we drive together to the pet food store. Heidi and Rene have organized funds for a food donation. Each of us—Gop and I—receives 120 kg (about 265 lbs) of dry food. Additionally, Gop receives an extra 40 kg (88 lbs) donated by the store. After Heidi and Rene visited Gop's new shelter, we head to mine. Heidi records some videos of the dogs she knows from previous visits. Once the couple leaves, I resume cleaning duties.
In the late afternoon, Will arrives with his wife and three children. Together, we unload 20 sacks of food while their eldest son films the process. After the family departs, I finish up the remaining tasks and leave the dogs for the night.
Friday, 13 December 2024
When I arrive at the shelter around noon, Pat is already there working. She has cleaned the front areas and is feeding the dogs. I get started on cleaning the back areas. Later, I take Lingling to Dr. Oi’s clinic. Pat had pointed out a wound on Lingling’s hind leg, which needs attention. The wound is treated, and to ensure proper care, Lingling will stay overnight at the clinic.
Back at the shelter, Pat has done a great job taking care of the dogs and has already left. I finish up the remaining tasks and then leave the shelter, planning to return early the next morning.
Saturday, 14 December 2024
When I arrive at the shelter, Soda, Mee, Noona, Sahm, and Woody greet me cheerfully at the gate. The dogs in the house area and the double-gate section are also doing well. I start by cleaning these two areas and then work my way through the back sections.
After disposing of the waste, I begin feeding the dogs. Once they are well-fed and I’ve refilled several water containers, I head to the clinic to pick up Lingling. Since she needs to wear a collar, she joins Kylie, who has retreated to the kitchen. Lingling will need to return to the clinic for a follow-up in two days.
Sunday, 15 December 2024
This morning, I waited in vain for Francesco, who had planned to visit the shelter today but didn’t follow up or make contact. Meanwhile, Claudia and Martin were already hard at work at the shelter. After a quick stop there, I headed out to check on the temple dogs.
I dropped off a bag of dry food for Ba Bät and bought her a sack of rice before continuing my search for Pema near the temple—again, without success. At the temple's front hall, I was greeted by Victor, Dahn, and Talib. They all seemed well, but my search for Deva turned up empty once more. The other beach dogs were all accounted for, including Kofi and Toto, whom I found farther down the shore. They looked well cared for.
By late afternoon, I was back at the shelter. Claudia and Martin had thoroughly cleaned all areas, ensured the dogs were well-fed, and refreshed the water in both the containers and tubs. I administered medication to Ling and Jack, then did a final round of cleaning. The dogs were calm and in a peaceful mood.
Monday, 16 December 2024
On the way to the shelter, I administer eye drops to Booboo again. His friend Beebee has also begun to trust me and now allows me to pet her. At the shelter gate, I am greeted by the usual suspects—all of them healthy and lively. Ling spent the night in the kitchen with Billy. I let both dogs out and start the cleaning tasks.
After disposing of the waste, I feed the animals and refresh the drinking water in some areas.
Kyra has developed a soft swelling on her flank, which I massage with a hot cloth. This treatment needs to be repeated a few times but is proving to be quite effective. Navo, as I suspect, has developed a fungal infection on his head, which I’ve been treating for three days now. To confirm my diagnosis, I’ll take him to see Dr. Oi tomorrow. Ling is also due for another bandage change tomorrow.
Tuesday, 17 December 2024
On my way to the shelter in the morning, I find Booboo again at the beverage shop and administer his eye drops. After cleaning the house, the house area, and the double-gate section at the shelter, I bring Ling on board. Dr. Oi changes her bandage. The wound is healing normally and should continue to be treated with Metronidazole.
After returning Ling, I pick up Navo and take him to see Dr. Oi. She is uncertain about the type of infection he has, so a test is needed to clarify. This requires a culture to be grown, and the results will take two weeks. In the meantime, Dr. Oi recommends treating the infection with Cephalexin, Doxycycline, and fish oil.
Navo goes back to the house area, and I start feeding the animals. Afterward, I clean the back areas and dispose of the waste. As dusk falls, I massage the soft swelling on Kyra’s flank before leaving the dogs for the night.
On my way home, I come across Booboo again, wandering around the market grounds, and give him another dose of eye drops. At Pong Park, I run into Meefoo, Daria, Sharkey, Bella, Randy, and Old Man. Outside the shop across the street, I find Dodo and Rico. In the backyard, I see Bo and the black male dog, who has now warmed up to me and is very friendly. I still need to learn his name. All the dogs are in excellent spirits and appear to be in good health.
Wednesday, 18 December 2024
In the morning, I find Booboo near the beverage shop and administer his eye drops. Pat is already working at the shelter when I arrive. She has cleaned the front areas and is in the middle of feeding the animals. I give the morning medications and then start cleaning the back areas.
In the afternoon, Pat finishes feeding, and I carry out a final cleaning round and dispose of the waste. On my way home, I spot Booboo at the market grounds and administer his eye drops again.
Thursday, 19 December 2024
On the way to the shelter, I give Booboo his eye drops again. In front of the shelter gate, I find all five dogs. At the shelter, I get started on the usual cleaning tasks, dispose of the waste, and then feed the animals. In between, I administer medication to Ling, Navo, and Jack. On my way home, I can’t find Booboo, but I do spot all the dogs at Pong Park. Chris sends me a video of Bobo, who has made further progress in his recovery.
Friday, 20 December 2024
In the morning, I administer eye drops to Booboo, and on my way back from the shelter in the afternoon, I repeat the treatment. Pat is already at the shelter, so after giving the medication, I head straight to Dr. Oi with Ling. The wound is healing normally and is treated with fresh bandages.
When I return to the shelter, Pat has already left. I complete a final cleaning round and dispose of the waste. In the evening, I visit Chris and am surprised by how agile Bobo has become.
Saturday, 21 December 2024
After administering Booboo's eye drops, I arrived at the shelter earlier than usual this morning, as Martin had informed me he’d be visiting. I started by cleaning the house and the front areas, then worked my way through the back sections. Once everything was cleaned, I fed the animals and did a final sweep through all areas to tidy up.
In the early afternoon, Martin and Ann visited. They had found me online and brought along six sacks of dry food and two boxes of canned food. Martin and Ann have rescued street dogs themselves, so meeting the house dogs posed no issues for them. They plan to visit us again at the end of the year.
Stefan from Vienna returned to Pattaya after eight years. I met him back then when he was feeding street dogs in Jomtien. Over the past few days, he befriended a street dog and asked me to check on the dog in case it needed medical attention. The dog, while elderly, appears to be in relatively good condition, so I don’t think treatment is necessary.
I invited Stefan to visit Beppe, who had asked for my advice regarding treatment for one of his dogs. I guided Beppe on the care process and asked him to keep me updated on the dog’s progress. Since Stefan will be staying in Pattaya for a few weeks, I invited him to visit the shelter whenever he has time.
