Daily reports first half of 2024

Monday, 1 January 2024

On my morning way to the shelter, I first check on Ringo's brother, who wasn't feeling well yesterday. I can't spot him, nor the female dog whose mother passed away a few days ago. However, Ringo is in sight, and he appears to be still healthy. Michael had informed me last night that Ringo was eating normally.

Tuesday, 2 January 2024

On my morning way to the shelter, I first check on Ringo's brother, who was not doing well yesterday. I can't spot him, nor the female dog whose mother passed away a few days ago. However, I do see Ringo, and he appears to be still healthy. Michael informed me last night that Ringo is eating normally.

Pat is already at work when I arrive at the shelter. To get an overview of any other unpleasant surprises, I start by going through all the rear areas. Tasha and Shaina have climbed over the gate again and are in the large sala area. Since they get along with the dogs there, I don't initially move them back to their section. In Tashi, Coco, and Lilly's area, I find a hole under the fence separating them from the Amy section. However, all seven dogs are staying in their respective areas. Maggie has escaped again from the farthest section, but I can easily bring her back. She just enjoys finding a way to overcome the fence and has no intention of running away.

After not discovering any more fence damage in the other areas, I proceed to repair the damaged fence in the Tashi section. After that, I distribute the medications and start the clean-up. In the meantime, Pat feeds the dogs and refreshes the drinking water.

In the early afternoon, we leave the dogs that have settled down for their midday rest. I briefly return to the shelter in the late afternoon to distribute the evening medications. Jack seems to be feeling a bit better, and Jake is already showing a surprisingly good improvement. Zola is much more peaceful in the double gate area than in the large sala section. Lizzy and Khiaow still occasionally snarl at each other but no longer engage in outright aggression.

Wednesday, 3 January 2024

Gop calls me this morning and informs me that dogs had escaped from the shelter again. I immediately head over but can only find Pinky and Maggie outside the gate. How the chubby Pinky managed to overcome the metal sheet fence is a mystery to me. She is unharmed, and I bring her back to the house area. Later, I gather Maggie by the back gate after doing a round through all the areas. All the dogs there are present. I then administer the morning medications and clean the house, house area, and double gate area.

Afterwards, I head back home for breakfast. I return to the shelter around noon. I start with an inspection round and discover a new damage in the large sala area. After securing several metal sheets, I clean the rear areas and then proceed to feed the dogs. In the late afternoon, I distribute the evening medications.

Thursday, 4 January 2024

When I arrive at the shelter this morning, Claudia and Jutta are already at work. The makeshift fence repairs in the house area and the rear sections have held up. Unfortunately, Chang Wai won't be available to install interior fences at vulnerable sections for another three weeks. I have to live with the temporary fixes and hope that the dogs won't cause any new damages in the meantime.

It seems like Maggie can't be contained in the farthest section anymore. I have to pick her up outside the shelter twice and, as a temporary solution, place her in one of the units at the TVT station. However, a permanent solution must be found for her.

After distributing the morning medications, I clean some areas while Claudia takes care of the house and the double gate area with the TVT station, and Jutta feeds the dogs in the rear sections. At noon, I entrust the responsibility for the dogs to the two women.

In the late afternoon, I return to the shelter, go through all the areas, clean the house, house area, and double gate area, and then distribute the evening medications. I hope to find all the dogs healthy and lively in their respective areas tomorrow morning. Now that the New Year is thankfully behind us, I am optimistic that the fences will hold until the end of the month when Chang Wai can install additional interior fences.

Friday, 5 January 2024

My hope that all the fences remained intact is fortunately fulfilled today. I immediately start distributing the morning medications. In the process, I release Maggie from the TVT unit where she spent the night. However, she promptly disappears over the fence outside. Since she navigates outside the shelter well, I'm not worried and proceed with the cleaning. Upon reaching the back part of the shelter, I gather Maggie again at the outer door and bring her back to her area. Not long after, though, she's outside again. Despite Maggie being relatively small, it seems that she is impossible to contain within the shelter unless I confine her.

In the early afternoon, I have to take the pick-up to the workshop because the brakes are reacting weakly. Fortunately, the issue can be quickly fixed. It just requires topping up a special oil. I've learned something new again. I also discuss the power steering oil loss with Khun Yao. The pick-up is twenty years old, and with my average annual mileage of 35,000 kilometers, I can expect that the repair costs will not decrease. In the not even four years I've been driving the pick-up, I've already had 90,000 Baht in repair costs, not counting the costs from accidents. I'm not really keen on investing more in the pick-up, but a good used one costs at least 300,000 Baht. Khun Yao offers me 60,000 Baht for my pick-up. So, I need to come up with about 250,000 Baht to be able to buy a new pick-up that will last until I kick the bucket.

In the late afternoon, I'm back at the shelter, feeding the dogs. I find Maggie outside at the back door, but now she refuses to go with me. Honestly, I'm not sure what I can do with her. Maybe I can integrate her into the house area.

Saturday, 6 January 2024

Pat is already working at the shelter when I arrive there in the morning. I bring Maggie inside through the house area door and place her in the large cage indoors. In there, she has plenty of space and a clear view of the entire house area, allowing the household dogs to get used to her presence. We hope that, after a period of adjustment, Maggie can integrate into the house area.

While Pat cleans the house and begins the feeding routine, I administer the medications and then go through all areas for cleaning. No further damage has occurred to the fences, and all the dogs are in good health.

In the late afternoon, I return to the shelter, clean the house and front areas, and distribute the evening medications. The dogs are in good spirits. Maggie lies relaxed in her cage and is not bothered by the dogs in her immediate vicinity. Zola remains overnight in the rear unit of the TVT station.

Sunday, 7 January 2024

This morning, I'm not feeling well at all, so I only make it to the shelter in the early afternoon. My first focus is on the dogs in the double-gate area. I let Zola out of the TVT unit and then check on Maggie. She made it through the night in her cage just fine. I take her to the kitchen, where she can socialize with Rocco, Kylie, and Aldo. There are no issues among the dogs.

After cleaning the house, the house area, and the double-gate area, I let Maggie into the house area where she moves around quite naturally. The larger dogs have no problem with her presence; only Carla and Cora bark at her a bit. This is normal for puppies being introduced to new dogs. After exploring the house area for a while, Maggie returns to the house and settles on the elevated platform, providing her with a view of what's happening inside.

I administer the medications and then proceed to clean the remaining areas. Once I've replaced the drinking water in all areas, I proceed with feeding. By this time, Maggie has left the platform and spent time in the house area. However, she returns to the platform during feeding, where she seems to feel safest. I decide to let her stay there overnight. This involves some risk, but if I want to integrate Maggie into the house area, it's a step I can't avoid.

Monday, 8 January 2024

I'm back early at the shelter and, with relief, I notice that Maggie seems to have settled under the sala in the house area. I take Zola back to the large sala area where she noticeably perks up and appears to be better off.

After ticking off these initial issues, I go through the usual routine of distributing medications, cleaning all areas, refilling water containers, and disposing of waste in the pit behind the shelter.

In the afternoon, I feed the dogs and then distribute the evening medications. Maggie spends the whole day either in the house area sala or underneath it. It seems that the house area dogs tolerate her presence, and the two puppies are gradually getting used to Maggie as well.

Tuesday, 9 January 2024

My silent hope of finding Maggie in the house area this morning unfortunately does not come true. Pat informs me that she didn't come across Maggie when she entered the shelter. I immediately look for Maggie but can't spot her in the open field next to the shelter.

While Pat cleans the house and starts feeding the dogs, I distribute the medications and then go through all the outdoor areas for cleaning. Maggie awaits me at the back gate, and I bring her to the area she shares with Elly, Shorty, and Girly.

In the afternoon, I visit Marianne and Nok. They have been able to rehome some of the puppies. About a dozen puppies are still with them. They have grown so much that they can now frolic with their mothers in the open space opposite the house.

In the late afternoon, I visit the shelter again, clean the house and the house area, and administer the evening medications.

Later in the evening, Steinar informs me that it seems Ringo's brother is not doing well again. I find the dog on the open field next to the Mabprachan 7/11. When he sees me approaching, he jumps up and disappears into the darkness. Helping the dog is challenging; we can only hope that he eventually overcomes the viral illness on his own.

Wednesday, 10 January 2024

In the morning at the shelter, I start with a walk through all areas and notice that Maggie has once again taken off. I can't find her in the outdoor area next to the shelter, so I proceed with the distribution of medication and cleaning. Except for Maggie, all the dogs are in their places and doing well.

Upon reaching the back end of the shelter during the cleaning, I find Maggie behind the rear gate and bring her back to her designated area. Afterward, I feed the dogs in the rear areas first and then take care of the dogs in the indoor and double gate areas. During a final walk through the areas, I realize that Maggie is absent again. Tomorrow, I'll make another attempt to make her feel at home in the house area.

On the way home, I make a stop at 7/11 to check on Ringo and especially his infected brother, whom I now call George. Ringo seems normal, and things seem to be improving for George. Like Ringo, he hangs around outside the store and runs away when I try to approach him. Although George is still weakened and has sticky eyes, his movements appear more coordinated.

Thursday, 11 January 2024

Today, I have important matters to attend to in Pattaya all day. Claudia and Jutta graciously take care of the work at the shelter. In the late afternoon, I finally get to the dogs. Claudia and Jutta have taken good care of them. I distribute the medications and return Maggie to her area. She seems to be getting along well outside.

Friday, 12 January 2024

In the early afternoon, I visit the dogs at the shelter after taking care of some important matters in Pattaya. During my rounds through all the areas, I find Maggie outside the gate and bring her back to her designated area. I assume she spent the night outside, but it doesn't seem to have harmed her.

As I start cleaning the house area, I see Edith overcoming the metal sheet fence. She jumps over the three-tiered platform onto the roof of the house kennel and then into the open. After a few minutes, she attempts to return to the house by scaling the two-meter high metal sheets, and I assist her. It seems Edith has developed some cat-like climbing skills, but I hope her outdoor adventure was a one-time occurrence. I can't be mad at her; she's such a lovable dog.

To prevent potential imitators, I rearrange the platform and proceed to clean all the areas. After disposing of the waste, I start feeding in the house and double-gate areas. The feeding for dogs in the rear areas follows. To my surprise, I find Maggie back in her area. Perhaps being alone outside became too much for her, and the novelty is wearing off. At least, that's what I hope.

Now, only Jack receives Doxycycline and Ferric, and he seems to be improving day by day. Jake, Carla, and Cora have completed their six-week Doxy/Ferric treatment and will continue with Ferric for another week under my care. As darkness falls, I leave the dogs. Though today was long and tiring, the dogs' affectionate seeking of closeness compensates me as always for all the effort.

Saturday, 13 January 2024

Pat is already working at the shelter when I arrive there in the morning. My first glance is towards Edith, who is lying in one of the house kennels. The rearrangement of the three-tiered resting area has had its effect.

I administer Jack Doxy and spray Kyra with colloidal silver. Despite the two-week-long treatment, I cannot observe any positive change in her skin condition. Pat has already cleaned the house area of feces, so I proceed to clean the remaining areas while Pat feeds the dogs and refreshes the water in some areas.

In the late afternoon, I am with the dogs again, going through all areas for another cleaning round. Surprisingly, Maggie has not left her area all day. After providing Ferric to Jack, Jake, and the two puppies, I decide to call it a day. As always, Pat has taken excellent care of the dogs. Some of them have already settled down for the night.

Sunday, 14 January 2024

In the early morning, I meet Saek, the dog catcher, at the Mabprachan 7/11. Saek successfully gets George into the cage, and I drive the dog to the Dr. Oi Clinic. Since George is frightened and consequently aggressive, he needs to be sedated for an examination. In the meantime, I head to the shelter, clean the house and front areas, administer the morning medications, and feed Cora, Carla, and Kylie. On my way back home, I spot Maggie about five hundred meters from the shelter, wandering on the road. I pick her up and temporarily take her to the TVT station.

In the afternoon, Dr. Oi informs me that the distemper test came back negative. However, to confirm the absence of distemper, a PCR test must be conducted. This requires a culture to be grown, so the results will only be available in a few days. Since George cannot be kept in quarantine at the clinic for the next few days, I need to bring him back to the Mabprachan 7/11 for the time being.

Before that, I return to the shelter, feed the dogs and clean the remaining areas. Maggie stays overnight with Jake in the front unit of the TVT station. Later, I pick up George from the clinic and return him to his spot. Since he refuses to leave the cage, he'll spend the night in the Cannasaur. Tomorrow morning, he can leave the cage if he feels like it.

In the late evening, I meet Michael and Nick at the Pong dogs' location. All are doing well, including Rita, the mother dog, and her three puppies. A resident takes care of these four dogs daily. Michael tends to all the other dogs.

Monday, 15 January 2024

I meet Chang Wai early in the morning at the materials store in Takhiantia. Chang Wai has already ordered a significant amount of material, which is delivered shortly afterward. Throughout the day, he and his assistant lay the foundations for the fence construction, while I supervise the dogs and clean the areas in between.

In the early afternoon, I feed the dogs, letting Maggie out of the TVT station. Seizing the opportunity, she climbs into the open. Now I know how she manages to do it. After finishing the feeding, I encounter Maggie at the back gate. She is lively and darting around. Clearly, she is enjoying her freedom, and I let her be. As long as she stays near the shelter, the risk of harm is low. Locking her up again wouldn't be good for her, and the fences in the outdoor enclosures are no obstacle for her.

On the way home, I pick up the cage from Cannasaur and check on George. Despite an intense search, I can't find him. In the late evening, I return to Mabprachan 7/11 to look for him again. Once more, he eludes me. It seems George has disappeared after being released from the cage and fed.

Tuesday, 16 January 2024

I'm at the shelter early in the morning, starting with the clean-up. Shortly after, Chang Wai and his assistant arrive. While they continue working on the foundations for the fences, I am off to Thai Watsadu in Pattaya to get wire mesh. Later, I visit the temple to take care of the dogs there. I find all the dogs that survived the distemper infection on the beach in good condition. However, I can't find Kofi and Toto, which concerns me as I usually find them around the beach house.

Back at the shelter, Pat is already feeding the dogs, and the workers have started making frames for the fences. The welding is happening in the house area. The dogs are naturally curious and not always cooperative, but Chang Wai and his assistant remain calm despite them. I have to banish the dogs in the double gate area into the TVT station so that the workers can come and go without disturbance.

After distributing the medications, I start cleaning the areas. Pat leaves the shelter, and I sit with the dogs while the first fences are being installed in the double gate and house areas. The work will continue early tomorrow morning.

Wednesday, 17 January 2024

I'm back at the shelter early in the morning, starting with the cleaning of the front areas. Maggie spent the night in the treatment room with Billy, Aldo, and Kylie. I open the door so the dogs can go outside. Maggie has no issues with the house area dogs and mostly stays indoors.

Chang Wai and his assistant arrive and continue the fence work in the large sala area. Meanwhile, I clean all the areas and refresh the drinking water. After that, I get two more rolls of chain-link fence and 100 kg of dry food. 20 kg of it goes to Gop.

In the afternoon, during the feeding in the Dodger area, I find that Alex has half-dug himself under the metal sheets in Kenji's area but can't move forward or backward. Darla and Safo come towards me as I open the door. I enlarge the hole the dogs have dug and free Alex, who fortunately remains unharmed. However, I cut my finger during the process; the half-shredded metal sheets are razor-sharp. I temporarily close the newly created opening. Originally, it wasn't planned to secure this fence section with chain-link, but now it will be necessary. The work will continue tomorrow morning. I put Maggie back in the treatment room for the night, where she seems to be getting along quite well.

Thursday, 18 January 2024

Before Chang Wai and his assistant arrive early in the morning, I start cleaning the house, the house area, and the double gate area. New materials are delivered, and fence work continues. Claudia and Jutta arrive and take over additional cleaning tasks, feeding the dogs, and renewing the water in bowls and tubs.

Meanwhile, I distribute the medications and then head to the clinic with Khiaow. Khiaow has contracted an ear infection and is being treated. I notice Maggie is missing from the house area and find her outside the shelter near the back gate. Since she seems to have settled there, I leave her alone and provide her with water.

Progress is being made on the fence work. The previously unsecured side of the double gate area, the house area side facing the double gate area, one side of the Nuri area, and one side of the Tashi area are now equipped with inner fences. Tomorrow, one side of the Dodger area will also be secured with wire mesh. Further repairs to damaged area doors are still pending.

Friday, 19 January 2024

Today begins with an unpleasant surprise: the pick-up truck won't start, so I have to ride my motorbike to the shelter. Arriving a bit later than planned, I find Chang Wai and his assistant waiting at the gate. While they continue with the fence work, I distribute the medications and start the cleaning process.

Outside the rear gate, I come across Maggie. She's happy to see me, but she doesn't want to go back to the shelter. I provide her with drinking water and proceed with my cleaning tasks. Chang Wai and his helper complete the temporary final section of the fence, separating the Dodger area from the Kenji area.

After settling the material bill, I head home where I meet Stewart, who jump-starts the pick-up for me. Stewart needs Bravecto, which I hand over to him at the shelter. Stewart drives, and I feed the dogs. Maggie is fed by me outside the shelter at the rear gate. With the fence work in the Dodger area finished, only repair work on the damaged doors remains.

Saturday, 20 January 2024

This morning, Chang Wai finishes the repairs on the doors in the Nina area and the large Sala area. The doors had been heavily damaged by the dogs during the New Year's fireworks. Pat arrives, as usual, bringing rice and canned food, which she mixes with dry food. She starts by cleaning the house and then feeds the dogs, while I clean the areas. Maggie appears at the front gate, and I temporarily place her back in the TVT station.

After Chang Wai completes the repair work, he takes me to a nearby scrapyard where I can dispose of the damaged metal sheets. Pat drives, and I go through the areas once again for cleaning, hoping to have fewer issues and expenses in the coming months.

Sunday, 21 January 2024

As expected, I don't find Maggie in the double-gate area. Fortunately, none of the other dogs follow her during her escapes. Later, I encounter her safely at the back end of the shelter. Since Maggie has no intention of running away, I grant her the freedom to roam around outside.

After distributing the medications, cleaning all areas from feces, and disposing of some leftover fence building rubble, I return to the scrapyard to get rid of the remaining scrap metal. Following that, I feed the animals and refill drinking water. Finally, I go through all areas once more to tidy up.

Monday, 22 January 2024

This morning, the pickup truck once again refuses to start. Suspecting the battery is the issue, I reach out to the owner of a battery service to come over. However, he informs me that it's not the battery causing the problem but the starter. The mechanic taps on the starter, and I manage to start the vehicle. I hope this method works when I'm on the road alone.

Back on the move, I purchase dry dog food and head to the shelter. There, I start by administering medications and cleaning the house. All the dogs, except for Maggie, are accounted for, and the repaired doors have held up. I find Maggie during my cleaning rounds near the back gate. After tidying up the remaining areas, I feed the dogs. Maggie receives her food and water outside.

In the afternoon, I return to the shelter, distribute evening medications to Khiaow, and thoroughly clean all areas again. Later in the evening, I check on the Pong dogs. Rita's three puppies are doing well, are playful and friendly. All the other park dogs are in good health. I locate George on the empty spot next to the 7/11, but in the darkness, I can't determine how he's doing. However, Michael informs me that George is eating well.

Tuesday, 23 January 2024

Pat is already working at the shelter when I arrive there in the morning. While Pat prepares the feeding and cleans the house, I distribute the medications and then start cleaning all the remaining areas. Maggie has settled in outside at the back of the shelter and appears to be content. I place her food and water there. After disposing of the waste, trimming and disposing of several palm fronds, I call it a day and leave Pat with the remaining responsibility for the shelter.

Wednesday, 24 January 2024

Ernest had asked me yesterday to check on three dogs that had recently settled in with him. They are two large males and a tiny female. However, before visiting Ernest and Rita's property in the morning, I first check on Songkran and Selma, two dogs I had sterilized about three years ago and hadn't seen in two years. I find both dogs in good health, well taken care of by local Thai residents.

The little female at Ernest and Rita's place is in heat, so her sterilization is urgently needed. I take her to the Sudarat Clinic, where she is promptly sterilized. Afterward, I bring her back to Rita and Ernest and take one of the males on board. He, too, is back within two hours.

I then visit the dogs at Wat Amparahm. All the dogs that survived the distemper epidemic are doing well. During my stroll along the beach, I encounter Kofi and Toto again, both in good spirits.

Back at the shelter, I start by distributing medications, then proceed to feed and clean. I provide Maggie with food and fresh water outside at the rear gate; she is relishing her newfound freedom.

On my way home, I find George in the field next to the 7/11. His condition remains unchanged. When he sees me approaching, he gets up and, with unsteady legs, moves away, making it difficult for me to examine his eyes. I also check on the three puppies near the Pong parking lot. Rita, their mother, takes a rest a bit further away. I plan to take her to Dr. Sudarat at the earliest opportunity for sterilization.

Thursday, 25 January 2024

In the morning, I arrive early at the shelter and start cleaning up the feces in the house and the house area. Afterward, I administer medications to Jack and Khiaow. Claudia and Jutta arrive. Claudia begins cleaning the house and the TVT station. While I clean the rear areas, Jutta feeds the dogs, cleans the water containers, and replenishes them with fresh water. Since Maggie doesn't seem to have any plans to return to the shelter, I place a transport box next to the back door and provide her with water and food.

I leave the shelter a bit earlier today and hand over the responsibility for the dogs to the two women. In the late afternoon, I return to the shelter to check on things. Khiaow receives her temporary final dose of medication for her ear infection, which is healing well. I notice ticks on Jake and Satya, so I administer Bravecto to both. For the night, I take care of Maggie at the rear gate. She is still doing well outdoors.

Friday, 26 January 2024

In the morning, I hear that one of the two Pitbull mix puppies from the shelter neighbors has died from Parvo. Now, I'm worried that his brother might be infected too, so I'm keeping an eye on him throughout the day.

All the dogs at the shelter seem to be doing well. I start, as always, with cleaning the house, the house area, and the double gate area. Afterward, I administer the medications to Jake and Jack. Both dogs are doing better. I continue to spray Kylie with colloidal silver, but I still don't see any improvement in her condition. Next, I clean the rear areas and dispose of the feces.

During this, I find Maggie outside the rear gate. I set up a transport box for her in a shady spot and provide her with fresh water. Maggie is enjoying her newfound freedom, and I have no concerns about her running away.

In the afternoon, I feed the dogs and replenish fresh drinking water where needed. I then check on Rita and her three puppies and, afterward, visit George. His condition appears unchanged.

Saturday, 27 January 2024

Pat is already working at the shelter when I arrive there in the morning. The first thing I check is the puppy next door. His condition seems unchanged. I decide to name him Alfie. Next, I inform Pat that I plan to take Alfie to the clinic for an examination. Dr. Oi conducts tests for Parvo and Distemper, and Alfie's blood is also tested. The results are encouraging: Alfie tests negative for Parvo and Distemper, and only his red blood cell count is a bit low. With the appropriate medication, I hope to get Alfie through this. Alfie goes back to his spot next to the shelter gate. I'll start the treatment tomorrow.

While Pat feeds the dogs, I distribute the medications and begin cleaning the areas. Maggie briefly comes to her old area for feeding but then prefers to go back outside. A box and water are available to her there. Pat takes over, and I finish the shelter work for today.

Sunday, 28 January 2024

This morning, I am at Ernest and Rita's place in Baan Amphur. The small female dog that wandered into their care and was sterilized four days ago is due for a follow-up examination. Additionally, we are taking Lek, the second stray male dog, to Dr. Sudarat for castration. We can wait during the procedure and then drive back around noon. Yai, the second male dog that was neutered four days ago, is recovering. The medication treatments for the three dogs will be continued by Ernest and Rita.

On the way back, I check on the Pong dogs. There was an event with fireworks on the parking lot last night. After some searching, I find Rita and her three puppies. I return the puppies to their original spot. Among the other Pong dogs, I spot Daria, Masha, Meefoo, and Rico.

In the afternoon, I finally visit the shelter dogs. They are all doing well, including Maggie, who is enjoying her time outdoors. I start with medicating Alfie, then treat Jack, Jake, Cora, Carla, and Kylie. Afterward, I proceed with cleaning, and finally, I feed the dogs.

The repair of the damaged metal sheets in the Tashi area has held up. The reason why Tashi and Beppe have been at odds for the past few days is not entirely clear to me. After all, they have spent years without issues in the adjoining areas.

Monday, 29 January 2024

Today, for a change, I'm experiencing a day without complications. After cleaning the house, the surrounding area, and the double gate area, I distribute the morning medications, now also to Alfie. He seems to be doing well, and he easily takes the pills wrapped in slices of sausage. After cleaning the rear areas and checking on Maggie, I feed the dogs.

In the afternoon, I'm back at the shelter, going through all the areas again for cleaning and refreshing the drinking water. Then, I administer the evening medications.

Tuesday, 30 January 2024

Meanwhile, Pat prepares the feeding and cleans the main house and the double gate area. I clean the main house area and all other sections from feces. Maggie continues to enjoy her freedom outside the shelter. In the midst of it all, Khiaow and Lizzy get into such a fierce altercation that I struggle to separate them. Surprisingly, the dogs remain almost unharmed. To prevent the feud between Khiaow and Lizzy from escalating again, I temporarily confine Lizzy to one of the TVT units.

While Pat takes care of feeding in the rear areas, I dispose of the feces and then hand over the responsibility for the dogs to Pat for the day.

Wednesday, 31 January 2024

This morning, the first thing I do is check on Alfie and administer his medication. The black dog from next door has a hind leg injury. If it doesn't improve, I'll have to take her to Dr. Oi. I let Lizzy out of the TVT unit and put Khiaow in there instead. There's still a tense atmosphere between the two dogs. Next, I give Jack Doxycycline and spray Kylie. Finally, I proceed to clean all areas and dispose of the waste. While doing so, I encounter Maggie by the rear gate, enjoying her freedom. In the afternoon, I feed the dogs and go through all the areas for another round of cleaning. I leave Khiaow in the TVT unit.

Thursday, 1 February 2024

Michael tells me late in the evening that Rita is not doing well. She is apathetic and not eating. This morning, it turns out that the woman feeding Rita and the puppies had her sterilized. I inspect Rita, who is already feeling better, and notice a healing sterilization wound. Rita's three puppies are nearby and doing well.

Claudia and Jutta are already at the shelter, starting to care for the dogs. I distribute the medications, and afterwards, Claudia successfully manages to bring the injured dog, Noona, from next door into the cage. Dr. Oi performs an X-ray on Noona, revealing that the ball of the right thigh bone is located next to the pelvic socket. Additionally, the pelvic bone on the left side of the body is slightly displaced. If the ball cannot be pushed back into the socket, surgery will be necessary. Noona remains at the clinic.

I am then at Wat Amparahm. Rice and dry food are sent again to Ba Bät, and rice is provided to the people caring for the beach dogs. In the front hall, I notice the absence of Jingo, and at the back of the beach, I only come across Toto, not Kofi. However, all the other beach dogs are accounted for. I find Deva and Dottie next to the front hall.

In the late afternoon, I am back at the shelter. I go through all areas, cleaning and distributing the evening medications. All dogs have been well taken care of by Claudia and Jutta and are content. I let Lizzy out of the TVT Station. She needs to get along with Khiaow. I don't have a suitable alternative place for either of them.

Friday, 2 February 2024

In the morning, I open the gate to the double-gate area and notice that Khiaow and Lizzy are begrudgingly getting along. The other dogs there have no issue with either Khiaow or Lizzy. Jutta and Claudia took good care of the dogs yesterday, so I spend a considerable amount of time picking up and disposing of the feces. In between, I spray Kylie and administer medications to Alfi and Jack.

In the afternoon, I feed the dogs, clean once more, and replenish drinking water where necessary. Dr. Oi informs me that surgery is necessary for Noona, as the joint head cannot be pushed back into the socket. In the evening, she informs me that the operation went smoothly. Noona should ideally stay at the clinic for a week for postoperative care.

Saturday, 3 February 2024

Today, Pat is once again actively supporting me. While she cleans the house and the surrounding area, I distribute the medications. Pat points out that some dogs in the double gate area are infested with ticks. Although we only find a few, the dogs still need to be treated with Bravecto.

While Pat starts with the feeding, I tackle the cleaning of the rear areas. Maggie continues to do well in front of the rear gate, and Alfie also seems to be in better spirits again. He appears to have coped with the loss of his brother. After disposing of the feces and some fallen palm fronds, I leave the remaining work for Pat today.

Claudia informs me that Kenzo is not feeling well. However, a thorough examination, including a blood test, reveals no concerning results. Kenzo will be treated with medication in the coming weeks.

Sunday, 4 February 2024

In the morning, Alfie and Jack get their medications first, and then I go on to clean and renew the drinking water. In the afternoon, I feed the dogs, including Maggie outside, where she's still doing well. Tashi's feud with Beppe has left clear marks on a metal sheet panel. The two dogs can't come into contact as the Beppe area is completely enclosed with an inner fence of wire mesh. I temporarily seal off the Tashi side. I'll have to replace the badly bitten panel tomorrow. All the other dogs get along peacefully, aside from the usual squabbles during feeding.

Monday, 5 February 2024

In the morning, I start by distributing the medications to Alfi and Jack. After that, I proceed to clean the house, the house area, and the double gate area with the TVT station. Khiaow and Lizzy seem to have found a way to coexist peacefully. Once the front areas are cleaned, I move on to the back areas. Following that, I refresh the drinking water in all areas. Maggie is still happily outside. After disposing of the waste and some palm fronds, I take a lunch break and then return to the shelter for feeding. In the early evening, I leave the dogs well taken care of and check on Rita and her puppies on my way back. All four dogs are doing well.

Tuesday, 6 February 2024

This morning, I pick up dry food and then check on Noona with Dr. Oi. The healing process is progressing normally. However, Noona still needs to remain in the clinic for a few more days. After that, I head to the shelter. Pat is already at work. I administer medication to Alfie and Jack. I complete Jack's Doxy/Ferric treatment after six weeks.

While Pat cleans the house and starts feeding, I clean the outdoor areas and dispose of the waste. I then replace the metal sheet panel that Tashi damaged. In the late afternoon, I hand over responsibility to Pat, who still has some final tasks to complete.

Wednesday, 7 February 2024

This morning, Alfie gets his medication first, and then I set about cleaning the house, the double gate area, and the other areas. Afterwards, I refill the water containers and feed the dogs.

The newly installed metal sheet between the Tashi area and the Beppe area seems to have a calming effect on the two bickering ones. Maggie is also doing well outside.

By late afternoon, I finish the work, which was once again very tiring due to the current intense heat. The ground is bone dry and dusty now. This isn't pleasant for the dogs in the outdoor areas, but at least they can find a shady spot in or under the salas. It's a bit cooler inside the house, as the fans are running there.

Thursday, 8 February 2024

Today, Claudia and Jutta are once again lending a helping hand at the shelter. I'm taking care of Alfi and then heading over to Wat Amparahm, while the ladies feed the dogs, clean the areas, and refresh the drinking water. Jingo seems to be missing, because during my last visit at the front hall a week ago, I didn't see him, and today, I can't find any trace of him either. However, on my stroll along the beach, I run into Toto and Kofi again, whom I missed during my last visit. All the other front hall and beach dogs are present too. It looks like the two new beach pups are here to stay.

After picking up a donation that was left for the dogs in a nearby condo, I return to the shelter. Claudia and Jutta have taken care of all the tasks. Claudia informs me that she's not happy with Victor's accommodation. I share her sentiment, but finding a solution isn't straightforward. As a trial, I let Victor back into the large sala area and spend some time with the dogs. They all still know each other, and Zola is particularly kind to Victor. However, after half an hour, he's glad to be back in his old area.

Then, I walk through all the areas, collect the waste, and dispose of it. All the dogs are well taken care of and have settled down for the night.

Friday, 9 February 2024

Marianne called me this morning to say that one of the mother dogs they've taken in is injured. However, they can't reach the dog. I asked Saek to catch the dog with a net. While doing so, I noticed a lump in the neck area of one of the puppies. Saek managed to catch the mother dog, and then I take both dogs to the clinic. They'll need to stay in the clinic for at least one night.

Noon has recovered enough from the surgery to be temporarily discharged. I ask the people in the house next door to take care of her indoors. In three days, I'll bring Noon back to Dr. Oi for a follow-up, and that's when the stitches can be removed.

Afterwards, I carry out my routine tasks at the shelter. After cleaning, I an feeding the dogs. Alfi received his last dose of Metronidazole. Tomorrow, I'll start him on a two-week course of Doxycycline. Maggie is doing well outside.

Saturday, 10 February 2024

Claudia told me this morning that Kenzo had passed away in a clinic in Rayong. He hadn't been doing well over the past week, and Claudia had been taking him to the clinic multiple times since then. I found Kenzo in a pitiful state on an open ground. Over the five years he spent in the shelter, he had recovered, but he had gone blind. Kenzo lived his life as best he could.

On the way to the shelter, I pick up dry food. Alfie starts his Doxy course. Noona is chained up in front of the house. I had instructed the neighbors yesterday to keep Noona inside. The likelihood of them following my advice was practically zero, but at least I had tried.

Pat feeds the dogs, and I walk through the back areas to check on things. The barricade between the Tashi area and the Beppe area held up. All the dogs in the back areas are doing well; Maggie is fine outside as well.

I then drive to the clinic to check on Mammy and Suzy. Suzy's abscess has been opened. It's quite deep and will need several days of follow-up care. Mammy had a high fever upon admission, caused by a uterine infection. She can probably be operated on tomorrow.

I reminded Marianne again that the remaining three mother dogs urgently need to be spayed and that the three-month injection usually causes uterine infections. That's why these injections are banned in Thailand, and no veterinarian would administer such treatment.

In the late afternoon, I'm back at the shelter. Pat has taken good care of the dogs, refilled water, and cleaned up feces. Today was her last working day for the next six weeks as she'll be in Australia.

I go through all the areas again for a final clean, and I let Victor out into the large Sala area for another trial. However, he's drawn back to his area, which he shares with Talib and Dang. As darkness falls, I administer Alfie's Ferric. Noona is chained up in a spacious bed outside the neighbor's terrace.

Sunday, 11 February 2024

This morning, I set out food and water for the dogs next door. Noona gets hers right next to her little bed. She seems to be doing okay so far. Alfie gets his Doxy, and he takes his pills without any trouble. Then I get to cleaning, which takes me until noon.

After that, I head to the clinic to check on Suzy and Mammy. Suzy will probably be able to go home in two to three days, but she'll need a few more check-ups afterward. Mammy had multiple surgeries. Her open wound in the abdominal area has been taken care of, and she's been completely cleared out. The uterine infection was caught early. Plus, they fixed a hernia. Mammy has to stay in the clinic for at least a week. Then, I visit Marianne and update her. I remind her again that the other three mother dogs will need to be spayed very soon.

Next, I'm back at the shelter, feeding and giving a final clean to all the areas. On my way back, I check on Rita and her puppies. They've found a new spot under a bridge by a creek. It's cooler there, and they're safe. At Pong 7/11, I look for George, but I can't find him. Ringo and the black male, I'll call him Paul now, are doing well.

Monday, 12 February 2024

George's absence this morning leaves me unsettled, so I look for him in the open field next to the 7/11, but once again, he is nowhere to be found. Ringo and Paul are lounging in front of the store. I then head to Rita's place and find her with the three puppies under the bridge by the water. The creek looks clean, so I'm not worried about them drinking from it.

At the shelter, I clean the house and the front areas before tending to Alfie. After that, I take Kylie to see Dr. Oi. Since I took Kylie in the summer of 2018, she has been struggling with skin issues that I just can't seem to solve. We've tried various therapies, but none have really worked. Today's test for mange comes back negative again. Dr. Oi suggests I try feeding Kylie a meat-free diet for a month. I'll cook for her and gradually introduce her to the new food.

Kylie returns to her spot, and Suzy, who temporarily finishes her treatment, goes back to Marianne and Nok. Suzy needs to be presented again in four days. I return to the shelter to feed the animals. Then I clean the back areas and refill water where needed.

On the way back in the evening, I find George in the open field. I also check on the Pong dogs, who are all in good health. I find Rita and her three puppies on the nearby parking lot.

Tuesday, 13 February 2024

Yesterday evening, GOP informed me that people in the vicinity of the shelter were setting off fireworks again. This morning, I found all the dogs accounted for and unharmed, but Shaina had somehow made her way into the house area. She climbed from her enclosure over the two-meter-high gate into the area of the large sala, then over another two-meter-high gate into the house area. Thankfully, the dogs in the house area didn't bother her, and I returned her to her enclosure with great relief.

During this, I noticed the lower part of the door between the large sala area and the Tashi area was smeared with blood and torn – fortunately, only one of the metal sheets was damaged. The door is double-locked. I suspect Zola as the culprit since she often messes with the door, but I couldn't spot any mouth injuries on her. Thankfully, all the other dogs were unharmed. I patched up the damaged door, but Chang Wai will need to completely refit it.

After tending to Alfi, I cooked a vegetarian meal for Kylie consisting of zucchini, carrots, tofu, seaweed, miso, and rice. Hoping it will help with her skin issues, I'll offer her a similar menu every day now. She seems to enjoy it as she emptied a large bowl.

I then gave the two puppies dry food and proceeded with the clean-up. In the early afternoon, I refreshed the drinking water and fed the remaining dogs. Afterward, I went through all the areas again to ensure cleanliness. Noona is still tethered in her bed. I'll take her to Dr. Oi for another check-up tomorrow, and hopefully, the stitches can be removed then.

Wednesday, 14 February 2024

In the morning, I head over to Marianne and Nok's place to take the mother dogs to Dr. Sudarat. The three dogs are hanging out in the front yard but can't be caught. So, I call Saek, who manages to get all three dogs into two cages. At the Sudarat Clinic, they are being sterilized for free as part of the SDF program. Initially, I planned to leave them at the clinic for three days after the procedure, but that's not possible. So, I bring them back immediately and drop them off at Marianne and Nok's.

Next, I pick up Suzy, as she's managed to partially remove her bandage, and head to the shelter. There, I pick up Noona and then head to Dr. Oi's. Suzy gets her bandage replaced, and Noona gets her stitches removed. Noona goes back to the neighbors for now, all healed up, and I settle Suzy into one of the house cages.

As I start cleaning up around the house, I open the cage door, and Suzy gets eyed by the house dogs. It's never pleasant for new pups, but I know the house dogs are just sniffing her out, not looking for trouble. Later, I move Suzy to the kitchen, where she gradually relaxes in the company of Aldo, Billy, Rocco, and Kylie. Suzy trusts me, which makes her adjustment relatively easy. I hang around in the kitchen for a bit, preparing Kylie's special food, which she eagerly devours later.

Suzy stays in the kitchen with some of the dogs while I tend to the others. I go from area to area, cleaning first, then refilling the water bowls, and finally doling out the dry food.

On my way home, I check on the parking lot dogs. I find the three puppies but no sign of Rita. The puppies are old enough now to get names. I call the black male Sharkey, the cream-colored male Randy, and the light brown female Bella.

Thursday, 15 February 2024

This morning, I buy 200 kg of dry food and store the sacks in the treatment room. Suzy spent the night safely in the house cage. I let her out, and she tentatively mingles with the household dogs, who are once again very kind to her. Some of them playfully approach her, and Suzy begins to relax more and more.

After cleaning the house, the household area, and the double gate area and refilling the water, I feed the dogs, put Suzy back in the cage, and head to the temple in Baan Amphur. There, I buy rice for Ba Bät and the people who care for the dogs on the beach, and check on the temple yard dogs and the beach dogs. All the temple yard dogs are present, and I see Jingo again. Further down the beach, Kofi and Toto greet me. The beach dogs near the boats also seem to be doing well. The two new puppies that have joined need to be sterilized soon.

Back at the shelter, I clean through all areas. I let Suzy roam freely in the house area again, where she now explores confidently and curiously. The household dogs seem to have fully accepted her already. So, I decide to leave her unconfined overnight.

Friday, 16 February 2024

In the morning, I'm back to my routine tasks, cleaning all areas, renewing the drinking water, and feeding the animals. Kylie has been receiving specially prepared vegetarian food from me for days. She eats it well, but I haven't noticed any effect on her skin condition yet.

Suzy has integrated well into the group of household dogs. Some dogs are already playing with her. In the early afternoon, I take her to see Dr. Oi. The wound has healed very well, but she still needs a bandage that can be removed in three days. So, I bring Suzy back to Marianne and Nok.

Back at the shelter, Khiaow and Lizzy get into a fight, so I have to lock Lizzy in the TVT station. I go through all areas again to clean. All the other dogs are behaving peacefully. Marianne later informs me that Suzy has torn off the bandage and the wound is bleeding. So, I need to take Suzy to see Dr. Oi again tomorrow morning.

Saturday, 17 February 2024

I pick up Suzy this morning and take her to Dr. Oi for her follow-up care. Suzy stays at the clinic while I head over to Baan Amphur. The two puppies recently added to the beach dogs need to be sterilized. With the help of the locals, I get the two dogs into a cage and drive them to Dr. Sudarat. Within an hour, the dogs are sterilized, and since they can't stay temporarily at the clinic, I bring them back to the shelter where they can recover in one of the TVT units.

After cleaning the house and the areas, I feed the dogs. Kylie gets her vegetarian menu again. Then I go through all areas once more, refreshing the drinking water, washing some of the water bowls, and filling them with fresh water. Maggie gets her food and water outside at the back gate. She's enjoying her life of freedom.

Sunday, 18 February 2024

Arriving at the shelter, I see Claudia feeding the neighbor's dogs. Jutta has already started work at the shelter. My first priority is to check on the two beach puppies. I name the male Nardo and the female Mira. Nardo has gotten rid of his bandage, so I put a collar on him instead. He has no issues wearing it. Nardo and Mira, who only know me superficially from the beach, begin to trust me. They are two pleasant patients.

After distributing morning medications to them, as well as to Alfi and Kylie, I visit Dr. Oi to inquire about Suzy's neck wound healing progress. Suzy will stay in the clinic today. I can take her back tomorrow, but she'll need to go to the clinic every two days for bandage changes for a while. Mammy can probably be discharged the day after tomorrow. However, I'll take her with me to the shelter until her first follow-up appointment.

During my rounds at the shelter, I notice Safo has joined Maggie outside again. I had to bring him back yesterday and do so again today. Safo tried to return to his area and ended up chewing on a metal sheet. I repair it. Apparently, Safo climbed over the wire fence and then over the metal sheets. I hope he doesn't make a habit of it.

I had noticed fleas on Victor and treated him accordingly. However, Claudia found fleas on Victor again and administered Bravecto to him, as well as to Talib and Dahn. While Claudia and Jutta continue caring for the dogs, I head home for a lunch break.

In the late afternoon, I return to the shelter, clean all areas, and distribute evening medications. Maggie is, as usual, outside, but I find Safo in his area this time.

After dark, I visit the three puppies at the Pong parking lot and find them safe and sound. I hadn't seen their mother, Rita, for a few days, and tonight Michael informs me that Hazel, who looks after Rita and the three puppies, has found TVT on Rita and taken her to Dr. Kwanchai for treatment. The treatment will take six weeks. This isn't a problem for the puppies, as they're old enough to manage without Rita for a while. Hazel cares for them, and Michael and I also check on them regularly.

Monday, 19 February 2024

When I pull into the shelter each morning, the dogs always greet me with loud barking. They know the sound of my pickup truck's engine. But today, their barks carry a different tone, one that doesn't sit well with me. So, I hurry inside and find Shaina in the house area. From the main hall, I hear more unsettling barking and spot Tasha lying on the ground, surrounded by several of the dogs. At first, I fear the worst, but she's still breathing. It turns out, Shaina and Tasha managed to climb over the two-meter-thirty-high gate from their area into the big sala area. I return Shaina to her area and rush Tasha to Dr. Oi's, where she's promptly treated. Tasha has only sustained minor injuries, but she's in a worrying state of shock. I leave Tasha in Dr. Oi's care and check on Suzy and Mammy, who are both on the road to recovery.

Back at the shelter, Dr. Oi delivers the heartbreaking news that Tasha has passed away. Tasha was an incredibly lovable, healthy, beautiful dog. I mourn her deeply. I dispense medication to Kylie, Nardo, Mira, and Alfie. Nardo and Mira are doing okay given the circumstances. I allow them a brief visit to the dogs in the double-gate area, but they'll remain in the front unit of the TVT station.

While cleaning the back areas, I notice Safo is missing again. I find him outside with Maggie and bring him back to his area. If Safo escapes again, I might let him spend a night outside. Maggie can take care of him then. She's gained enough experience outside the shelter by now.

After feeding the dogs, I collect Tasha's remains from Dr. Oi's. Since it's already late, I'll take Tasha for cremation tomorrow morning. On the way back, I swing by the Pong dogs. Meefoo, Rico, Dodo, Woody, Masha, and Darla welcome me in the parking lot by the playground. I also spot the three puppies, Sharkey, Randy, and Bella, in the other lot. All the dogs are doing well. After a taxing day with the shelter dogs, I cherish the time spent with them.

Tuesday, 20 February 2024

This morning, I'm taking Tasha to the NPW Clinic for cremation. Then, I am visiting Dr. Oi. There, I meet Christoph, who's seeking advice from Dr. Oi regarding a vaccination protocol for his dog. I can temporarily take in Suzy and Mammy. However, Suzy will need to come back in two days for a bandage change. She'll continue receiving Metronidazole. Mammy will likely need to stay at the shelter for a week to be observed.

Mammy goes into the front TVT unit, which she shares with Nardo and Mira. Initially, she keeps to herself, but she starts to warm up in the afternoon and eats well. Mammy, Kylie, Suzy, Alfi, Nardo, and Mira receive their medications. While I clean the house and the front areas, I let Nardo and Mira out to the double-gate area dogs. They have no trouble adjusting, and the dogs there accept their presence easily. Suzy goes back into the house area where she's already familiar and is also accepted without issues.

Upon reaching the Dodger area for cleaning, I find that Safo has escaped again. I had anticipated this; once dogs escape, they usually try again. So, for now, Safo stays outside and keeps Maggie company. They seem to get along.

During a short break, I lock up Nardo, Mira, and Suzy, then return to the shelter in the afternoon. I let the three puppies out and start feeding. Kylie gets her special diet again, and there's some left for Carla and Cora. I feed the neighbor dogs dry food and give them fresh water. Since Noona came out of the clinic, she's been quite friendly towards me. Maybe she senses that I helped her. Maggie and Safo get food and water at the rear shelter gate.

After completing feeding all the dogs and refilling water in some areas, I put Suzy in the large indoor cage; Nardo and Mira go to Mammy in the TVT station.

Wednesday, 21 February 2024

I take Nardo and Mira out of the TVT station in the morning, and Suzy out of the house cage. Mammy stays in the TVT station. After cleaning the house, the house area, and the double gate area, I pick up Victor and Talib and drive them to Wat Amparahm. I leave Dahn in their area for now. At the Wat, I let the two dogs out, show them the front hall area first, and then take them to the beach. Both dogs curiously explore their new surroundings but always stay close to me. At the beach, we meet Kofi and Toto. There are no issues with them, and the dogs by the boats don't mind the newcomers either.

After an hour, I leave Victor and Talib at the front hall and continue my shelter work. I let Dahn out into the large sala area, where she easily blends in with the dogs there. She's warmly welcomed by Norbu, Kito, and Arkan, her puppies. I leave the gate between the two areas open. I also leave the gate to the TVT unit open so Mammy can have the option to venture outside, but she chooses to stay inside her unit.

After cleaning the remaining areas, I buy food and feed the dogs. Kylie gets her vegetarian food again, while Cora, Carla, and Suzy get rice meals. Mammy gets canned food. I provide dry food and water for the neighboring dogs.

After giving all areas a final cleaning, I put Nardo and Mira back with Mammy, and Suzy goes back into the large house cage for the night. The dogs in the large sala area get along well. Safo continues to stay outside with Maggie.

Thursday, 22 February 2024

This morning, I start off by letting Nardo and Mira back into the double-gate area and Suzy into the house section. I leave the door to the unit where Mammy is open. Then, I clean up the house and double-gate areas and refill the water. After that, I distribute the medications.

Next, I take Suzy to see Dr. Oi. Suzy's bandage is changed, and Dr. Oi is satisfied with how her wound is healing, so I don't need to bring her back until Sunday. Suzy goes back to her cage for now, and the two pups, Nardo and Mira, go back to Mammy.

Then, I head over to Wat Amparahm to check on Victor and Talib. I find them both at the front hall, and it looks like Diva has joined them. I take Victor, Talib, Saddhu, and Hiro for a walk on the beach. The two newcomers seem to have gotten over their shyness about the new surroundings; they're exploring eagerly and making contact with Toto and Kofi. However, Victor and Talib stick close to me.

Back at the front hall, I spend some time with them. Akira, Yoko, Taro, and Rika join us. Jingo hangs back and watches us from a distance. Today, I don't have to lock up Victor and Talib when I leave. They follow me for a few meters and then go back to their spot.

In the late afternoon, I return to the shelter. I let Nardo, Mira, and Suzy roam free and start feeding the dogs in the house. Then, I take care of the dogs in the double-gate area and, finally, all the other dogs in the rear sections.

Zola seems unsettled ever since Dahn has been hanging around in the big Sala area. So, I put Dahn back with Norbu and Kito in the smaller area. To restore harmony in the big Sala area, tomorrow morning I'll introduce Dahn to Victor and Talib. They get along well, will stay together, and form a new subgroup.

Friday, 23 February 2024

In the morning at the shelter, I start by letting Nardo and Mira out of the TVT station and leave the door to the double gate area open so Mammy can also find her way outside. Then I let Suzy out of the house cage and administer the medications. After that, I clean the house, the house area, and the double gate area.

Next, I open the door between the big sala area and the adjacent area where Dahn, Norbu, and Kito spent the night. I grab Dahn and put her into the cage on the pickup truck. Then, I confine Suzy, Nardo, and Mira again and head with Dahn to Wat Amparahm.

Victor and Talib are waiting for us at the front hall and take Dahn in. We all walk down to the beach together. While it's the third trip to the beach for Victor and Talib, everything is new for Dahn. However, she adapts quickly and explores the new environment with curiosity. As she wanders off, Victor and Talib stick close to me again. We run into Toto and Kofi, who are always hanging out at the beach. Back at the front hall, I spend some more time with the dogs before leaving. Victor, who's been quite clingy, follows me for a few more meters. I figure he still needs some time to adjust.

Back at the shelter, I let the three puppies out, clean the back areas, refresh the water, and feed the dogs in the front areas first, then the ones in the back. Maggie stays outside, but Safo wants back into his area. I'll probably find him outside again tomorrow. Before I leave, I lock Nardo and Mira back with Mammy, and Suzy goes into the house cage.

Shortly after I head home, Gop calls me. One of her dogs got spat on in the eyes by a cobra. Dr. Oi is treating the dog, who needs to stay overnight at the clinic. Gop isn't sure if the cobra is still lurking under her house.

At Pong Park, I check on Sharkey, Randy, and Bella. At first, I only see Sharkey, but after half an hour of searching, Randy and Bella show up. The three puppies are growing and thriving, and we've already developed a close bond.

Saturday, 24 February 2024

This morning, I open the doors to the double-gate area for Mammy, Nardo, and Mira and let Suzy out of the house cage. Suzy joins the house area dogs, Nardo and Mira join the dogs in the double-gate area where Mammy is gradually settling in there as well.

After cleaning the front areas, refreshing the drinking water, and distributing medications, I vaccinate Paula and take her on board to return her to Wat Amparahm. After a brief orientation, she makes contact with Dahn, Talib, and Victor. Together, we go to the beach, where Paula initially seeks out her familiar spot. However, she then follows us on our beach walk, where we encounter Kofi and Toto again. Paula repeatedly thanks me for bringing her back.

Dahn, accustomed to living freely in a village, has no trouble adjusting. Talib accepts the relocation as well. Victor is now finding his way more easily and beginning to enjoy his newfound freedom. It's likely crucial that he's in the familiar company of Dahn and Talib and perhaps also that I visit the dogs every day.

Back at the shelter, I feed the dogs and then clean all areas. Safo, whom I find outside with Maggie again in the morning, will now stay outside for the time being. Like Maggie, he has his freedom there and is provided with food and water. Before heading home I lock up Mammy, Nardo, Mira, and Suzy again for the night.

Sunday, 25 February 2024

In the morning, I take Mammy, Nardo, and Mira out from the TVT station and Suzy out of the house cage. After vaccinating Nardo and Mira and cleaning the house, the house area, and the double gate area, I take Nardo and Mira on board. Mammy goes back to the TVT station, and Suzy goes into the house cage.

With Nardo and Mira, I head to Wat Amparahm, where I release the two puppies on the beach. They are greeted by the boatmen and quickly settle in. I meet Victor, Talib, and Dahn at the front hall. We take our usual stroll along the beach, where we encounter Kofi and Toto. I notice Deva is missing at the front hall, just like yesterday. Since the boatmen have run out of rice, I provide them with a 45-kilogram sack.

Back at the shelter, I open the gate for Mammy and let Suzy out of the cage. Then, I clean the back areas and replenish the drinking water. Afterward, I take Suzy to see Dr. Oi. Her bandage is changed. I'll bring her and Mammy back for a check-up in three days.

Back at the shelter, I feed the dogs in the front areas first, then in the back. Maggie and Safo get their dry food and fresh water outside at the rear gate. I also provide food and water for the neighboring dogs. Noona is already walking much better.

Monday, 26 February 2024

In the morning, I let Mammy and Suzy out into the open again and then begin cleaning the house, the house area, and the double gate area with the TVT station. Suzy moves quite naturally among the dogs in the house area, and Mammy also seems to be making friends with the dogs in the double gate area. Her contact with me is improving steadily. After distributing the medication, I proceed to clean the rear areas.

In the afternoon, we experience a brief downpour that lowers the temperature and cleans the air. Maggie and Safo weather the shower outside without any issues. Then, as in previous days, I feed Carla and Cora in the treatment room and Suzy in one of the house cages. Next, I attend to the dogs in the double gate area and finally the dogs in the house and all outdoor areas, including Safo and Maggie at the rear gate. Before leaving the shelter, Suzy goes back into one of the house cages, and Mammy goes into the covered cage in the double gate area.

Tuesday, 27 February 2024

After not visiting Victor, Dahn, and Talib at the temple yesterday, I joined them again this morning. They After not visiting Victor, Dahn, and Talib at the temple yesterday, I joined them again this morning. They enthusiastically welcome me at the front hall, and the first thing I do is check on Diva, whom I missed in the past few days. She's in her usual spot. Taro, Akira, Rika, Yoko, and Jingo are hanging out with Paula and Taco by the temple wall. And among the boatmen, I find Nardo and Mira.

With Victor, Dahn, Talib, Paula, and Taco,I head to the beach, where we run into Toto and Kofi. It seems like they're still getting used to the newcomers. Victor seems to have fully embraced his new life. Dahn and Talib are now behaving as if they've always been beach dogs.

Back at the shelter, I let Mammy and Suzy out of their cages, administer the medication, and start cleaning. Mammy now spends most of her time outside in the double-gate area with the other dogs and seems to have found her place. She's also growing more trusting of me.

After finishing the cleaning, I refresh the drinking water and clean up the waste. Then, I feed all the dogs. Safo and Maggie are back outside with some neighbor dogs for company. They all get along well. Maggie is enjoying her freedom, while Safo still shows signs of wanting to return to the shelter. But as long as the weather holds, he'll stay outside for now. I've set up a second box outside so both dogs have shelter if it rains.

Wednesday, 28 February 2024

After cleaning the house, the house area, and the double gate area, I go with Mammy and Suzy to Dr. Oi's. Mammy is discharged as healed, and Suzy gets a new bandage. Her wound is healing very well. Then, I take Mammy and Suzy back to Marianne and Nok. I'll bring Suzy back to Dr. Oi for a follow-up examination in three days.

Back at the shelter, I clean the remaining areas and then do the feeding. Afterwards, I go through all the areas once more for another round of cleaning. Maggie and Safo seem to be doing well outside.

Thursday, 29 February 2024

In the morning, I purchase 120 kg of dry food and store the sacks in the pantry. Then, I prepare Kylie's food, distribute the medications, feed the neighbor's dogs, and start cleaning. After disposing of the waste, I feed the dogs. Safo is already exploring the nearby area, much like Maggie used to. However, both dogs mostly stay near the back gate. They often receive visits from the neighbor's dogs. Particularly with Blacky, Alfie's brother, they seem to get along exceptionally well.

Norbu appears to have been stung by an insect on the mouth. I administer Prednisilone to him in the morning and afternoon. Kito has a wound on his tail, which I am treating with wound spray.

Friday, 1 March 2024

This morning, arriving to Wat Amparahm first I check on Victor, Dahn, and Talib. But before that, I pick up 45 kg of rice for Ba Bät and also provide her with 20 kg of dry food. The three dogs greet me enthusiastically at the front hall and seem to be in good shape. I manage to administer their vaccinations. Later, I find Diva, but unfortunately, Dotty is missing. We take our stroll along the beach with Paula, Saddhu, and Taco joining us.

By early afternoon, I am at the shelter. I clean the areas, distribute the medications, and then feed the dogs. Safo and Maggie are still hanging around the back gate. I let Elly join them. Elly loves her freedom and constantly walks along the fence in her enclosure. I can't bear to see it anymore. Unlike Safo and Maggie, she quickly makes contact with the dogs at the neighboring house. However, she won't run away. On my way home, she follows me for about 200 meters, but I'm not worried; Elly knows her way around the streets.

Saturday, 2 March 2024

I find Elly in good spirits in front of the shelter entrance this morning. She kindly declines my invitation to return to the shelter. First, I distribute the medications, including to Alfie, and then I start cleaning the house and front areas. Upon reaching the cleaning in the back areas, I check on Safo and Maggie. However, I can only find Safo.

In the afternoon, I'm back at the shelter. After feeding and cleaning again, I find Maggie with Safo, Elly, and Blacky from next door near the back gate. It seems the three shelter dogs are thoroughly enjoying their newfound freedom.

I interrupt my journey home at the Pong parking lot. There I encounter the three puppies, Sharkey, Randy, and Bella. I sit with them and watch as they playfully roughhouse with each other.

Sunday, 3 March 2024

I find Elly again in front of the shelter entrance gate. She's pretty dirty, but seems to be enjoying her freedom. Elly gets along well with the neighbor dogs who roam freely outside. Noona from the neighboring house is now running around every day and seems to be pain-free. Since I never know if the neighbor's dogs are being fed, I provide them with dry food and fresh water. At noon, I see that the food bowls are empty.

After cleaning the house and all the remaining areas, I feed the dogs and refill water where necessary. Maggie and Safo I find a bit outside the rear shelter gate. They're obviously ranging further now. I'd love to release all the dogs into freedom, but unfortunately, that's not possible. It's not like the dogs within the shelter are unhappy, but when I see how well Dahn, Victor, Talib, Safo, Maggie, and Elly thrive outside, I doubt if my work really makes sense.

Monday, 4 March 2024

In the morning, I take care of the neighbor's dogs, providing them with food and water. Elly also shows up by the shelter gate. Once I've cleaned the house, the house area, and the double gate area, I distribute the medication. Kito has developed two bald patches on his tail. Just like yesterday, I give him fish oil, a vitamin capsule, and Rimadyl. Then, I clean up the back areas and dispose of some palm fronds. One of the palms in the house area clearly looks sick, having lost its entire canopy. At the back gate, I spot Safo, but I can't see Maggie anywhere. After a short break, I feed the dogs and refresh the drinking water in a few areas. Kylie gets her special vegetarian meal again.

Tuesday, 5 March 2024

First off, I take care of the neighbor's dogs again. Elly is hanging around in front of the shelter gate, just like yesterday, apparently planning to keep doing so. Lizzy and Khiaow occasionally bicker in the double gate area, but things don't spiral out of control. Maybe I should give Lizzy a chance to blow off some steam outside too. Maggie is also back on the scene, and both her and Safo are doing well outside. After distributing the medication, I clean all areas and then feed the dogs.

In the early afternoon, I'm back at the temple, primarily to check on Victor, Talib, and Dahn. All three dogs are doing well. They seem to mostly hang out in the front hall, moving around there with great ease by now. At the back of the front hall, I also find Deva. She prefers to be on her own.

I take Victor, Talib, and Dahn to the beach, where we meet Taco, Paula, Nardo, Mira, and Schnauzi. Taco and Paula join us on our stroll along the shore, where we run into Kofi and Toto. Especially Victor, Dahn, and Talib enjoy the beach outing. It's a joy to see how much their newfound freedom agrees with them.

Late in the evening, I'm still with the Pong dogs. Michael, who usually feeds them every night, is unavailable for a few days, so I take over his duties. While I'm at it, I also vaccinate the three puppies, Sharkey, Randy, and Bella.

Wednesday, 6 March 2024

In the morning, my first task is to take care of the neighbor's dogs again. Alfie still gets his dose of Doxycycline as usual. Then, I administer medication to Kylie and Norbu. After that, I cook rice, prepare vegetarian food for Kylie, and clean the house, the surrounding area, and the double gate area. Elly continues to hang out in front of the shelter gate.

As I start cleaning the back areas and refreshing the drinking water, the air becomes unbearable. The neighbors are burning plastic cables again to extract the metal within. When the wind is unfavorable, clouds of contaminated air drift over the shelter. It's particularly bad today, so I have to stop my work prematurely.

I use the time to go to Pattaya to buy fish oil, vitamin capsules, and sausages for distributing medication. On the way back, I stop at the Pong parking lot to check on the three puppies. I eventually find them under the bridge by the small stream, where they've found a shady spot. It's intolerably hot again today, with temperatures reaching 33 degrees Celsius in the shade and over 40 degrees in the sun.

In the afternoon, I'm back at the shelter. The air isn't much better, but the dogs still need care. I feed them, refresh the water in the areas I couldn't reach in the morning, and then clean up. I find Safo, Maggie, and Elly outside at the back gate. Elly, who must have been rolling in the dirt yesterday, looks as pristine as ever.

Thursday, 7 March 2024

I pick up dry food, store the bags in the kitchen, then I take care of the neighbor's dogs outside the shelter gate. After that, I distribute medication for the shelter dogs. Starting today, I'm also treating Hiro with fish oil and vitamins. He's showing mild fur issues again. Next, I clean the house, start cooking rice and vegetables, and tidy up the indoor and outdoor areas. Then, I go through the remaining areas to clean them up.

Around noon, it gets unbearably hot again, so I feed the dogs in the early afternoon and replace their drinking water where necessary. At the back gate, I run into Safo, while Elly and Maggie are hanging out near the neighboring property.

Friday, 8 March 2024

First, I take care of the neighbor's dogs, providing them with dry food and fresh water. Then, I distribute the medications to Alfi, Kylie, Hiro, and Kito. After cleaning the front areas, I feed them all shelter dogs. Kylie gets her vegetarian meal again, and there is some left for the two pups, Cora and Carla. I feed Elly, Maggie, and Safo outside behind the rear door.

It's oppressively hot again today, and the work is exhausting. Maybe it's because I'm now 75 years old and not as energetic as I used to be a few years ago. The current weather isn't enjoyable for the dogs either. The ground is bone dry, and all the grass is withered. To cool off a bit, the dogs dig themselves into the ground.

Once I've completed most of my tasks, I take a lunch break and then return to the shelter to clean the back areas. I refill the drinking water in some areas. The dogs are mostly relaxed; some have already settled down for the night.

Saturday, 9 March 2024

This morning, I headed back to Wat Amparahm as my first stop, mainly to check on Victor, Talib, and Dahn. It's been five days since my last visit, and even though they had adapted well before, I still have some lingering concern for them. However, I find them healthy and lively down by the beach. Except for Dotty, I encounter all the other dogs as well, including Nardo and Mira, who are lounging by the boatsmen. We embark on our customary beach stroll, which the dogs adore.

On the way back, I check on the three Pong puppies. I find them sleeping under the bridge next to the little stream. It seems they've found their spot to escape the midday heat.

At the shelter, I start by tidying up the front areas and administering medications. Then, I clean through the rest of the facility, refreshing the drinking water in all sections. Afterwards, I feed the dogs. This afternoon, the temperature is more pleasant. It's cloudy, and there's even a brief shower now and then, clearing the air.

I spot Elly, Maggie, and Safo around the shelter. Elly seems to prefer hanging around near the main gate, Maggie tends to stick to the neighboring area, and Safo wanders around the adjacent property. Despite my friendly coaxing, all three decline to return to the shelter.

Tonight marks the last time, for now, that I'm filling in for Michael in feeding the Pong dogs. My efforts to make the dry food appealing to them have mostly been in vain. It seems they find tastier alternatives during the day.

Sunday, 10 March 2024

Today, I'm back to my routine tasks at the shelter. After tidying up the house and front areas, I distribute the medications and then work my way through cleaning the back areas. There was a light rain in the morning, which cleared the air and moistened the ground, making the work easier. Elly is roaming near the main gate, and I find Safo at the back door. Despite some searching, I can't find Maggie.

After refilling the drinking water in most areas, I first feed the dogs in the house and the double gate area, and then move on to the back areas. Since I couldn't locate the three Pong puppies last night, I check on them in the afternoon and find them safe and sound.

Monday, 11 March 2024

Upon arriving at the shelter, my first task is to feed the neighbor's dogs and provide them with fresh water. I see Elly roaming around the gate, but she is quickly chased away by the neighbor's dogs. Despite my call for her to come to me, she refuses once again.

After cleaning the house and front areas, I distribute medication to Alfie, Kylie, Hiro, and Kito. Then, I feed the dogs and replenish their drinking water where necessary. At the back gate, I encounter Safo and Maggie. While Maggie wanders around, Safo usually stays close to the gate. I make another attempt to make him feel at home in his area, where he remains until late afternoon.

As I clean the back areas, it starts to rain. While the rain is welcome, it doesn't make the work any easier, and I end up completely soaked after cleaning the remaining back areas of waste. Since I'm already feeling under the weather, I quickly head home to avoid getting even sicker.

Tuesday, 12 March 2024

I start by feeding and watering the neighbor's dogs again and distributing the medication. Then, I clean the house and the front areas, followed by the rear areas. I find Safo again at the back gate. My attempt yesterday to reintegrate him into the Dodger area has failed. I have to accept that he Elly and Maggie prefer the freedom to roam outside over being confined in the shelter. This doesn't worry me as long as I find them in good spirits and in good condition.

All the other dogs are in good shape as well. My only ongoing concern is Kylie. Despite the extra food, her coat condition isn't improving. After feeding, I go through all the areas again to clean up and dispose of the waste. I see Elly, Maggie, and Safo roaming around the open field next to the shelter.

Wednesday, 13 March 2024

In the mornings, I handle getting the feed and then dive into my routine tasks. While I'm hauling the feed sacks into the shelter, Khiaow slips out. But I don't fret over her because I know she won't stray far. Once I've wrapped up my cleaning duties, I find Khiaow by the gate and smoothly escort her back into the double-gated area. Safo, Maggie, and Elly are hanging out near the rear gates.

Come evening, Gop sends me a video of her feeding the dogs with rice out on the wasteland in front of the shelter. Naturally, they prefer that over my dry food rations. Ever since Elly and Maggie ventured out of the far end, Girly and Shorty have been thriving. I was worried they might get bored, but apparently that's not the case.

Thursday, 14 March 2024

After entering the double-gate area and the house area and confirming that all the dogs there are in good spirits, I start by feeding the neighbor's dogs and then proceed to tidy up the front areas. Following that, I distribute the pre-cooked rice food to Kylie, Hiro, Carla, and Cora.

Next, I administer the medication. Kito's condition has noticeably improved, and he's feeling comfortable again. While he still has two bare spots on his tail, they will surely grow back in time.

After cleaning the rear areas and refreshing the drinking water, I feed the dogs in the front areas first, then move on to the rear ones. The dry food in the boxes outside the rear gate is hardly touched. I just need to refresh the water. Safo is still hanging around near the rear gate. It seems he's often visited by the neighbor's dogs and has become friends with Blacky.

Elly and Maggie are wandering around the neighboring property. On my way home, I spot them on the access road to the shelter. I stop, and as I get out, both dogs jump into the car. I briefly consider taking Elly back to her area, but then both dogs exit the car and run off. They probably just wanted to let me know they're doing well.

Friday, 15 March 2024

This morning, I make a quick stop at the shelter to clean the house and the front areas. In the back areas, I just check things briefly. Then, I head over to take care of the temple dogs. I get rice again for Ba Bät and the folks who look after the dogs at the beach, and then I go for a beach walk with Victor, Dahn, Talib, Saddhu, Paula, and Taco. At the entrance, I find Deva and Dotty, and nearby are Taro, Akira, Rika Yoko, and Jingo. When we return from our walk, I also come across Schnauzi, Nardo, and Mira. All the dogs are doing well, but Taco seems to be having skin problems again, which I'll have to address during my next temple visit. On the way back to the shelter, I stop by Beppe's to give him some Doxycycline tablets. One of his dogs at home needs treatment.

Back at the shelter, I start cleaning the back areas. To my horror, I find Leo lying lifeless on the ground in the area of the three Salas. He has obviously been attacked, as I notice several bite wounds on him. How this happened is beyond me. Just this morning, he was fine, and there were no issues among the dogs in the area where he lives. I found Leo lying motionless by the roadside in the summer of 2020. X-rays showed a quadruple fracture of his pelvis. Without surgical intervention, Leo recovered after a few weeks and lived a normal, trouble-free life at the shelter for years. Leo was only four and a half years old.

I pick up Leo, carry him inside, and prepare him for transport. Then, I finish cleaning and start feeding the dogs. I only need to replace water in a few areas. Safo, Elly, and Maggie are still hanging out on the neighboring property. In the early evening, I take Leo to the NPW Clinic for cremation.

Saturday, 16 March 2024

Whenever I lose another dog, I enter the shelter with a bit of worry. The dogs in the front areas behave normally, and I don't see any issues in the back areas either. However, upon my return to the house area, I notice a wound below Pinky's eye. Her eye is almost completely shut. I treat Pinky with Prednisilone. Kylie, Hiro, Kito, and Alfie receive their medications. Billy has been suffering from discharge in his right eye for a few days; he gets eye drops just like Jake. Otherwise, Jake has surprisingly recovered well.

After administering the medications, I clean the house, the house area, and the double gate area. Then, I go through all the back areas for cleaning. I find Safo and Elly near the back gate and bring them both back to their areas. However, Safo is out again in no time. The two-meter-high chain-link fence is no obstacle for him. I have to accept that he obviously prefers being outside in freedom rather than in his area with Dodger, Max, Alex, and Darla.

Back in the house, I feed Kylie first, and then Cora and Carla with the prepared rice food. The remaining dogs have to settle for dry food. After completing another round of cleaning and refreshing the drinking water in all areas, I leave the dogs alone in the late afternoon.

Sunday, 17 March 2024

Upon reaching the shelter, I collect the food bowls and water dishes of the neighbor dogs, clean them, fill them with dry food and fresh water, and place them back against the wall next to the neighbor's house. Then I distribute the medications. Today, Alfi and Kylie are getting their preliminary final dose of Doxycycline. Kito continues to receive vitamins and fish oil capsules, which Billy is now also receiving. Additionally, they, along with Kylie and Jake, continue to receive eye drops. Pinky has incurred an injury around the right eye, which I'm also treating.

Next, I proceed to clean the house, the area around it, and the double gate area. Afterwards, I refresh the drinking water there. Then, I move through the rear areas, cleaning and refreshing the drinking water in each section. It's scorching hot again today, hitting 34 degrees in the shade, and I'm mostly working under the sun. Elly has stayed in her area, while Safo is lingering near the back gate. I can't spot Maggie anywhere. I start by feeding the dogs in the front areas before moving on to the rear ones.

I've pondered once again why Leo might have been killed. He was the only male besides Tarik and Tibor in the two connected areas. Ruby, Venus, Sita, Nuri, Shaina, Yuki, and Buffy are all female. It's conceivable that Tibor and Tarik, who by now were bigger and stronger than Leo, might have wanted to assert their dominance over him.

Monday, 18 March 2024

Michael asked me yesterday to check on a female dog he regularly feeds at Pong Amusement Park. After some searching, I find Yaya, and manage to get her into a cage on my pickup truck. At Dr. Oi's clinic, Yaya receives initial care.

At the shelter, I start by distributing medication and then proceed to clean the house and front areas. Next, I prepare rice food for Kylie. Then, I refresh the drinking water in all areas and also clean the back sections. Kylie, Carla, and Cora get the rice food, while the remaining dogs have to settle for dry food again.

Afterward, I return to Dr. Oi's clinic. Yaya's blood test revealed serious anemia and liver damage. Yaya is on a drip and needs to stay in the clinic for observation for three days. On the way back, I stop by the Pong dogs. I miss Sharkey; all other dogs are doing well.

Tuesday, 19 March 2024

Upon arriving at the shelter, my first task is to provide dry food and fresh water to the neighboring dogs. Next, I administer medications to Billy, Hiro, Kito, and Kylie. Then, I clean the house, the house area, and the double gate area. While tidying the back areas, I come across Maggie and Safo near the back gate. Both are doing well. They barely touched the dry food provided for them.

As usual, I start by feeding Carla and Cora in the kitchen, then proceed to feed all the other house dogs. After that, it's feeding time for the dogs in the double gate area, and finally, all the remaining dogs in the back areas.

Afterward, I head to the clinic to check on Yaya. She's already much better than yesterday; eating and drinking normally. In two days, I'll probably be able to take her into the shelter.

Wednesday, 20 March 2024

Before the shelter, I notice a nasty wound on Blacky's back, the Pitbull mix from next door. It doesn't seem to bother him much, but it needs attention. Knowing the neighbors won't take care of it, I have no choice but to take Blacky to Dr. Oi. However, I'm not as familiar with Blacky as I am with Alfie, his brother, and my cage is still at the clinic since all the clinic cages were full when I brought in Yaya, who is still occupying my cage. I hope to bring Blacky in for treatment tomorrow.

Just last night, Gop informed me that she's worried about the dogs hanging around near the shelter. She doesn't trust the workers who are still burning cables and fears they might snatch dogs to kill and eat them. So, I grab Safo and lock him up with Kenji. Kenji's area doesn't have interior fencing, so I hope Safo can't get past the metal sheet fence. I don't spot Maggie, but Gop assures me she's around her shelter.

After distributing the medication and cleaning the house and all areas, I feed the dogs, including the neighbor's dogs. It's starting to rain lightly as I tend to the dogs in the back areas, and it picks up while I'm working. Nevertheless, I manage to finish all the essential tasks by the afternoon.

Once the rain eases off, I head into town to bring Beppe some Doxycycline for one of his dogs he keeps indoors. Beppe isn't home, but I can leave the medication. Later, Beppe calls to inform me that the dog in need of treatment has passed away.

Thursday, 21 March 2024

In the mornings, I'm at the temple, coating Taco with the sulfur powder/olive oil mix and giving him a multivitamin tablet. Then, I head to the beach with Victor, Talib, Dahn, Paula, and Taco, our usual crew. Along the way, we run into Toto and Kofi. When we return to the front hall, despite a thorough search, I can't find Deva. All the other dogs, including Schnauzi, Mira, and Nardo, are accounted for.

In the early afternoon, I pick up dry food, check on Rita and the puppies, and then head to the shelter. My first task there is to bring Safo and Maggie inside. I briefly lose sight of Safo in the Dodger area, and he's already agilely climbed over the fence. It's the first time I've witnessed his feat, and I'm impressed by his agility. To prevent a similar escapade with Maggie, I immediately lock her up with Kenji, then grab Safo outside again and reunite him with Maggie and Kenji. I sit with the three dogs for a while to observe their interactions. Maggie and Safo know each other from their escapades outside, but for Kenji, meeting the two escape artists in his area is a new experience. Throughout the afternoon, the three dogs get along, and neither Maggie nor Safo attempt to escape, which might be harder for them since the Kenji area doesn't have an interior fence.

After this exercise, I start cleaning, followed by feeding, and then refreshing the water in some areas. While doing so, I notice that Blacky's back wound hasn't improved. Without a cage available, I have to postpone his treatment for now and pick up Yaya from the clinic. Getting her into the cage on the pickup truck isn't a problem. Dr. Oi gives me several medications to administer to Yaya over the next ten days. To ensure this, I have to accommodate her in the shelter during this time. I move her to one of the TVT areas where she has enough space to move around and hopefully recover soon. I postpone Blacky's clinic visit until tomorrow morning since it's already dark.

Friday, 22 March 2024

In the double-gate area, it is my first step to check on Yaya. She's lounging on a bench in the TVT station. Yaya seems content and has a good rapport with me. To my mild surprise, I find Safo and Maggie still in the Kenji area. They apparently attempted an escape but failed. Kenji seems fine with his new companions, lounging in the Sala while Maggie and Safo explore the lushly vegetated area.

The dogs managed to dismantle the gate between Tashi's area, where Lilly and Coco reside, and the neighboring section where Nina, Bum, and Beppe live, damaging a metal sheet in the process. I secure the gate from both sides again.

After cleaning the front areas and feeding both the resident dogs and the neighbors dogs, I administer medications. Yaya takes her pills without any fuss. Then, I take Blacky to see Dr. Oi. Although Blacky is not aggressive towards me, I had to ask the neighbors to help get him into the cage. Dr. Oi treats the wound, which, though deep, is thankfully free of maggots. Anticipating that Blacky will roam outside, Dr. Oi fits him with a shirt to protect the bandage. Back home, Blacky eagerly devours the remaining dry food. For the next five days, he'll be on Doxycycline and Rimadyl.

Next, I clean the back areas, refill water, and feed the dogs there. Kenji, Maggie, and Safo continue to get along well. It seems Kenji approves of the integration with the two young dogs, so I'm hopeful that Maggie and Safo will settle in with Kenji for the long term.

On my way home, I check on Rita and her puppies. They're all nestled together near the bridge over the small stream, well-fed by park visitors who seem to care for them too.

Saturday, 23 March 2024

Upon arriving at the shelter, I first check on Yaya in the TVT station. She is lying on a bamboo bench and appears to be comfortable. As a trial, I leave the door to her area open to allow the dogs in the double-gate area to become familiar with Yaya's presence. While I clean the double-gate area, some of the dogs visit Yaya but show no further interest in her. They are accustomed to occasional new guests.

Once I am satisfied that Yaya's integration is not causing any issues, I distribute the medications. Blacky receives his pills outside the gate. The bandage and shirt are still in place.

I then proceed to clean all areas and refill drinking water where necessary. Maggie and Safo seem to have settled in with Kenji. Kenji is lying in the sala, Safo underneath, and Maggie has found a spot in the bushes. I sit with the dogs for a while to observe how they interact with each other. It appears that Maggie's and Safo's relocation is progressing successfully. After feeding them, I leave the dogs a bit earlier today. As a precaution, I lock Yaya back in her area.

Sunday, 24 March 2024

Today has been another absolute disaster of a day. It all starts with the pick-up truck refusing to start. The starter has been unreliable for a while now, but I've always managed to get the truck going after a few tries. Today, my attempts are futile, so I have to ride the moped to the shelter.

Upon arrival, my first task is to feed the neighbor's dogs. Blacky's bandage has gotten wet; it seems to have rained overnight in the shelter area. In the double gate area, my first concern is for Yaya. She's peacefully lying in her TVT unit. I leave the door open so she can have some freedom to roam if she wants. I notice that Khiaow has ticks. She must have picked them up yesterday when she slipped out through the gate.

I administer medication to Blacky outside and then start cleaning the house, the house area, and the double gate area. Yaya hasn't left her area. Afterward, I clean the rear areas. I find Maggie and Safo safe and sound near Kenji.

In the area where Girly, Shorty, and Elly are, I see a big cobra lying in the sand. Even though the dogs could have killed it, they didn't escape unharmed. During the fight, the cobra spat into all three dogs' eyes, causing damage to their conjunctiva. I dispose of the cobra and clean the dogs' eyes with saline solution. Dr. Oi recommends treating the dogs with Doxycyclin and Prednisolon. If there's no significant improvement in their conjunctiva, I'll have to take them to Dr. Oi.

Another guest has appeared in the area of the three dogs. I suspect it's a myna nestling. Mynas are constantly around the shelter. I don't have high hopes for keeping the nestling alive, but I still bring it inside and wrap it in a towel. If it's still alive tomorrow, I'll try to raise it. Years ago, I successfully raised a fallen sparrow from the nest and even taught it to fly. Eventually, it flew off and never returned.

After temporarily taking care of Girly, Shorty, and Elly, it starts to rain. During a break in the rain, I feed the dogs. As always, I start with the dogs in the front areas and then move on to the rest. Yaya eats the dry food well. After refreshing the drinking water in most areas, I head back home. The nestling is still alive, and I hope to find it alive tomorrow as well. I lock Yaya back up.

Monday, 25 March 2024

This morning, my first task is to find a mechanic who can get my pick-up truck running. However, I discover that the front tire of my moped is flat. So, I push the moped to the nearest repair shop, a few hundred meters away from my place. The tire gets fixed, and luckily, I find a small workshop specialized in auto electronics. Their mechanic is kind enough to come to my resort and manages to start the pick-up truck for me.

At the shelter, my first stop is to check on the fledgling. Surprisingly, it has survived, and I hand it over to Gop, who will try to nurture it. I administer the medications, clean the house, the house area, and the double gate area, and then take Girly, Elly, and Shorty on board.

Dr. Oi examines the dogs' eyes and finds conjunctivitis in all three of them. The dogs need to be treated with Doxycycline, Prednisolone, and Genta Oph for at least a week. To manage this, I relocate them to a unit at the TVT station, and Yaya goes into one of the indoor kennels.

As I start cleaning the back areas, it begins to rain. Although I have to pause my work, the rain is much welcomed. After cleaning all the areas, I feed the dogs. Maggie, Safo, and Kenji seem to still get along well. Kenji's area is spacious enough for all three dogs and has a roomy sala.

Yaya also appears to have settled into the indoor kennel. She's such an easy-going dog. Yaya still suffers from hind leg mobility issues. Dr. Oi suggests that her full recovery could take up to a month.

Tuesday, 26 March 2024

At the shelter, my first task is to distribute medication to Elly, Shorty, and Girly in the TVT station. They're not particularly thrilled staying there, but since I have to treat them twice daily, they'll have to bear with it for a few more days. Next, I administer medication to Blacky from next door and Yaya, who seems to be doing well in the house kennel. Blacky's shirt was taken off by the neighbors yesterday, probably because it got wet, and now Blacky has managed to remove the bandage as well. The back wound is almost healed, but I'll need to keep monitoring it.

After feeding the neighbor dogs, I clean up all the areas. In the large sala area, I find Maggie lying dead on the ground. She managed to overcome both the metal sheet fence and the wire mesh fence of the large sala area and was fatally attacked by the dogs there. I pick up Maggie, pack her body, and place it on the bed of the pickup truck. I had hoped Maggie would settle down with Kenji alongside Safo in the long run. However, her urge for freedom was stronger and cost her young life.

After feeding the dogs, I take Maggie to the NPW clinic for cremation. On the way back, I meet Saek at the Wat Pong market. Saek informed me last night that he found a dog with an apparently broken hind leg near the market. After consulting with Michael, who allowed me to take the dog for an initial examination by Dr. Oi, Saek tries to locate the dog again. However, he doesn't succeed, so we arrange to meet tomorrow morning for another attempt.

In the afternoon, Gop informs me that the nestling is still alive and eating. So today, I lost a precious animal, but another gives me hope that it will survive.

Wednesday, 27 March 2024

This morning, the GOP asked me if they could hand over the fledgling to someone who's better equipped to care for birds. Hoping that this is indeed the case, I agreed. Shortly after, Saek called me and informed me that he was already searching for the injured dog but couldn't find him. However, he assured me he'd keep looking.

As feared, the pickup truck wouldn't start, so I rode my scooter to the shelter. I headed straight to the Kenji area and let Safo into the Dodger area. Shortly after, Safo jumped over the fence and disappeared. Maggie's premature end still weighs heavily on me, and I don't want Safo to wander into the big Sala area and suffer the same fate. Outside, he has his freedom, and he won't run away.

After checking all the other areas and ensuring that all the remaining dogs are present, healthy, and lively, I start by administering medication to Yaya, Blacky, Elly, Shorty, and Girly. All the dogs easily take their pills wrapped in slices of sausage. The eyes of the three cobra victims are looking much better today.

Next, I clean all the areas thoroughly and replenish the drinking water. Then, I feed the dogs in the front areas first, followed by the neighboring dogs, and finally attend to the dogs in the back areas. Since I need to tend to the repairs of my pickup truck, I decide to finish up at the shelter a bit earlier today.

Thursday, 28 March 2024

Yesterday evening, a mechanic from the neighborhood managed to start the pickup truck, and I drove it over to Khun Yao's workshop. Khun Yao explained that he needed to replace the starter, which would take a day. He lent me his scooter to get back home.

This morning, I rode my scooter to the shelter. As usual, I first distributed the medications, then cleaned the house, the surrounding area, and the double gate area with the TVT station, and refreshed the drinking water there. Yesterday, I found ticks on Khiaow and Lizzy and gave them Bravecto. Today, I also noticed ticks on Chip and Luna.

Since I'm out of Bravecto, I start by cleaning the rear areas and refreshing the drinking water there. I find Safo safe and sound by the rear gate. After feeding the dogs in all areas, I visit Gop on the piece of land where her new shelter is being built. The ground has been cleared and leveled, outer fences have been erected, and some salas have been built. When the new shelter is ready, Gop's dogs will have more space to roam, as the area is estimated to be about five times larger than their current enclosure.

Khun Yao informs me in the afternoon that he has installed the new starter, and I can pick up the pickup truck again. This is a relief for me because the constant uncertainty of whether I could start the car again after turning off the engine on the way has been quite stressful. On the way home, I pick up two large packs of Bravecto, which I will distribute to the dogs in the double gate area tomorrow morning.

Friday, 29 March 2024

Ben told me this morning that he's interested in visiting the shelter. Turns out, he's staying just a few hundred meters from the resort where I live. I meet up with Ben and his girlfriend, and together we head to the shelter. Ben's demeanor around the dogs shows me he's got experience with dogs. I guide Ben and his girlfriend through the entire shelter without any issues. The dogs are used to visitors, and many of them spontaneously approach them, as they do today. Ben plans to visit us again tomorrow.

Once the guests leave, my first task is moving Yaya from one of the kennels to the bathing room. There, she has more space to move around and can better interact with the house dogs. Yaya remains very calm. She's still suffering from mobility issues in her hind legs. Next, I check on Elly, Girly, and Shorty. Elly's and Girly's eyes seem to be clearing up nicely, but Shorty's conjunctivitis is still quite inflamed.

After cleaning the house, I administer medications to the three of them, to Blacky outside, to Yaya, and starting yesterday, I am also  giving Doxycycline to Lena. Lena has lost weight. I'll get her blood tested as soon as possible.

During my cleaning routine, to my surprise, I find Safo in the Dodger area. How he managed to get over the fence from the outside is beyond me. Safo stays in his area until the afternoon but then disappears back outside.

After refreshing the drinking water in all areas, I feed the dogs. Then, I clean the house, the house area, and the double gate area once more before leaving the dogs for the night.

Saturday, 30 March 2024

Pat is back and already taking care of the dogs when I arrive at the shelter in the morning. Shortly after, Ben and his girlfriend Pen show up. As I let them into the double-gate area, a scuffle breaks out between Khiaow and Lizzy, but Ben skillfully separates the dogs in a professional manner, preventing any serious harm.

While Pat cleans the house and prepares feedings, I distribute the medications. Ben and Pen start cleaning the rear areas and also replenish the water there. They work independently and are a tremendous help.

Elly's eyes are almost back to normal, and Girly's conjunctivitis is also improving significantly. However, Shorty still suffers from severe redness in his conjunctiva. I continue administering eye drops, Doxycycline, and Prednisolone to all three dogs. Next door, Blacky and Yaya also receive their medications.

After Ben and Pen leave, I bring Lena aboard and drive her to Dr. Oi. Lena's blood is tested, revealing kidney damage and dangerously low blood levels. She'll be put on IV fluids for the next three days. After that, I'll have to continue treating her subcutaneously with saline solution at the shelter. How Lena got the kidney damage is a mystery to me, as she never leaves the house.

Back at the shelter, Pat has already finished her tasks, and I just need to walk through the areas to ensure all gates are securely closed. Interestingly, Safo wanted to return to his area and stayed there until late afternoon.

Sunday, 31 March 2024

In the morning, on my way to the shelter, I check on Rita and her three pups, Sharkey, Bella, and Randy, and find them sleeping under the bridge in the cool sand. It's the perfect spot to escape the rising heat.

The heat also takes its toll on me while working at the shelter, and the dogs suffer no less than I do. Inside the house, it's a bit cooler because I usually keep all the fans running. However, today we're dealing with a power outage, which doesn't make the work any easier. Nevertheless, I have to carry out all tasks as usual. Cleaning the outdoor areas, in particular, is no fun in scorching heat. The dogs there burrow themselves under the Salas in the still damp sand or try to find a cool spot under the trees. However, I mostly have to work under the blazing sun.

By late afternoon, I've completed all tasks, including medication distribution. Safo was out and in again but joined his companions there only for a short while.

There's currently a lot of commotion in Pong Park, which hopefully will be over by tomorrow. I'll then try moving Yaya back to her usual spot, where she'll hopefully move around a bit more. I can administer her medication there too.

Monday, 1 April 2024

It's scorching hot again this morning, so I've decided to keep Yaya in the shelter for now. She's got the bathroom to herself, which is a bit cooler than the outdoors. Once this heatwave lets up, I'll try to reintroduce Yaya to the park.

We've got power back this morning, and the fans are running, providing some relief for the house dogs at least. The dogs in other areas are seeking shade under the Salas. The temperatures in the TVT area are bearable thanks to the insulated ceiling.

Girly, Shorty, and Elly's eye healing is progressing well, so I'm considering bringing them back to their area soon. Safo wanted back into the shelter, so I let him in. He enjoys roaming outside, but finding a shady spot isn't easy. Blacky's neck wound is almost healed.

I distribute the medications, then feed the neighboring dogs first, followed by the dogs indoors, and then those in the double-gate area. After cleaning these three areas, I feed the dogs in the rear areas and clean up there too.

Once I ensure all the dogs have enough drinking water, I head to Baan Amphur. At the temple shop, I buy two sacks of rice, one for Ba Bät and the other for the older man in the house by the beach, who also cares for Toto and Kofi among other dogs. Normally, one sack goes to the boatmen who care for the beach dogs, but it seems they've moved on. One of the locals tells me that someone's been feeding the beach dogs every evening now, which seems to be true since they're in good shape.

At the front hall, I run into Victor, Dahn, and Talib. They've obviously made themselves at home there, so Rika, Taro, Yoko, and Akira have retreated back to the beach wall. I spot Deva and Jingo in their usual spots. However, I notice Dotty missing again. She might have joined the other temple dogs.

I find Schnauzi, Paula, Nardo, and Mira by the boats. Nardo, Paula, and Mira join us for our stroll along the beach. By the boats, I also find Sadhu and Taco. Both have developed some bald patches in their fur, so I apply the sulfur/coconut oil mixture.

Since I didn't spot Toto and Kofi during our beach stroll, I search for them after leaving the temple dogs. In the distance, on a vacant lot, I see several dogs playing around and manage to spot Toto among them. Although I call for Kofi, he doesn't come over to me.

Tuesday, 2 April 2024

This morning, Pat is already at work when I arrive at the shelter with dry food on board. While Pat cleans the house, the house area, and the double gate area, I distribute the medications, then go through the back areas cleaning and renewing the drinking water there.

The metal sheet fence separating the Tashi area from the Nina area is heavily damaged next to the door, as Tashi and Beppe regularly clash through the locked door. I attempt to hastily repair the damage. However, once I have the necessary resources, numerous fence repairs will need to be carried out again. I also consider replacing some vulnerable passages with sturdy gate doors. The heat is unbearable today, and such additional burdens significantly stress me out, but all necessary tasks must still be completed.

In between, I bring Elly, Girly, and Shorty back to their area. I carry each of them individually outside the shelter from the double gate area to the furthest area, as I can't navigate through several areas inside the shelter with the dogs in my arms. The three dogs trust me and remain calm in my arms, so the relocation goes smoothly.

Since I don't want to take Yaya back to the park in the heat, I leave her in the bathing area where she is well taken care of for now. While Pat finishes feeding, I drive to the clinic to check on Lena. Lena is still on a drip. Another test showed a creatinine level of 2.3. That's bad news. I've never had a dog with such a high level for a long time. Once I can take Lena back, I'll have to administer daily subcutaneous infusions to help her kidneys function as much as possible.

Wednesday, 3 April 2024

This morning, my first stop is the clinic to pick up Lena. Once I confirm she's settling back into the house without any issues, I distribute the medication and then tidy up the areas. Safo awaits me at the rear gate, eager to be let back in. He'll remain in the Dodger area until late afternoon.

Indoors, I feed Carla and Cora first, followed by Lena separately. Then, I attend to the house area dogs and those in the double gate section. It seems the neighbor's dogs have been fed, as there's still dry food available for them. Finally, it's feeding time for the dogs in the rear areas.

I'm concerned about Yaya's condition. Despite taking her medication without trouble, I don't sense she's improving. The current heat isn't helping, and even the fans running constantly provide little relief. So, I decide to return Yaya to the park in the afternoon. I place her in the public washroom, the coolest spot there.

In the early evening, I check on her again. Yaya is still in the same spot. Someone has left rice food for her, which she hasn't touched. It's evident now that she can't get up. I pick her up and bring her back to my apartment. There, I clean her up as she's soiled herself. Yaya is cooperative and trusts me. I can only hope that being in a more comfortable environment will help her feel better soon.

Thursday, 4 April 2024

This morning, I find Yaya in the same condition, unchanged. She hasn't moved from her spot. I call Michael, and he comes over to check on Yaya. Michael allows me to take Yaya back to Dr. Oi. But first, I have an early morning appointment with Chang Wai. I want to commission him to replace two damaged connecting doors in the shelter with sturdy metal frames. Chang Wai will start the work on Saturday.

After Chang Wai leaves, I clean the front areas, refresh the drinking water, and administer medication. Then, I give Lena her first infusion, which goes smoothly, thankfully.

In the Nuri section, I find Yuki dead on the floor. Yuki had never ventured into this area before and always stayed within the three Salas section. Now, Jingo at Wat Amparahm is the last surviving dog from the Duk.com cellar. These recent losses are hard to bear, but I must carry on to be there for the ones still living.

Once I've cleaned all areas, I feed the dogs and refresh the drinking water in most sections. I take Yuki on board and head home to pick up Yaya. I feared I might not find her alive, but she seems to have slightly improved.

At Dr. Oi's clinic, I meet Ann, a teacher from Rugby School. Ann had visited our shelter before and supports my work. She agrees to cover Yaya's treatment costs. A PCR test will confirm whether Yaya, as Dr. Oi suspects, has distemper. The test results will be available in at most four days. With Yuki on board, I then head to NPW Clinic to have her cremated.

Friday, 5 April 2024

I'll take care of getting dry food and then check on Rita and her puppies. It looks like the four dogs have found their spot by the creek under the small bridge. They're lying in the damp sand, snoozing through the beginning of the heat. After that, I'm off to Dr. Oi's to check on Yaya. Yaya's on a drip and seems to be doing a bit better.

First thing at the shelter, I go through all the areas to make sure everything's alright. With the recent deaths, I'm feeling a bit traumatized, and it'll take me a few days to process the losses. Next up is Lena. Lena's still behaving completely normally, but I know from experience that her time is borrowed. With daily infusions and giving her Renavast, I'll try to make her remaining time as comfortable as possible.

After letting Safo back in, I start cleaning the house and all the areas. Then, I refresh the drinking water and finally feed the dogs. I hope the heatwave will be over soon because it's draining all my energy, and I'm pretty wiped out after just four hours of shelter work.

Saturday, 6 April 2024

Today, I'm enjoying a welcome relief as both Pat and Claudia are back working at the shelter. Meanwhile, I'm in Baan Amphur checking on the temple dogs. Thankfully, the three newcomers Victor, Dahn, and Talib are doing well there. However, it seems they've taken over the front hall because I can't find Dotty or Diva. I've been missing Dotty for three weeks now; but I saw Diva at her spot during my last visit a few days ago. I hope she hasn't disappeared too. Both dogs are adorable, and I'd like to do more for them, but the shelter is full, and I'm not sure if they'd enjoy captivity. On the bright side, the former temple dogs Jake, Satya, and Luna have settled in very well at the shelter.

I find all the beach dogs lying by the boats. With Victor, Talib, Dahn, Taco, Nardo, and Paula, I take our usual stroll along the shore. Nardo seems to have befriended Victor as he accompanies us all the way to the front hall. Since I didn't see Kofi and Toto on the beach, I try to locate them from the beach road. I find them safe and sound in a small wooded area away from the main shelter where they are looked after. Due to the current heat, the beach is almost unbearable, so they've sought out a cool spot under the trees.

After running some errands in town, I visit Beppe. Naturally, the heat is getting to him too; after all, he's already 90 years old. I see two new dogs with him; one regularly rests with him during the day and then disappears at night, while the other is currently being treated by Beppe for blood parasites.

In the late afternoon, I'm finally at the shelter. First, I distribute the medications and then go through all the areas. Pat and Claudia have fed the dogs, cleaned the areas, scrubbed the water containers, and refilled them with fresh water. They've also put up a large sunshade in the Amy area.

After going through all the areas again for a final check, I administer the infusion to Lena. Chang Wai is scheduled to come tomorrow morning to replace three damaged passages with massive steel grid doors.

Gop has posted an update on the nestling I found and handed over to her for care. One of Gop's acquaintances has taken in the nestling, and it seems to be thriving.

Sunday, 7 April 2024

This morning I'm very early at the shelter because Chang Wai has arranged to replace three damaged doors with sturdy steel beams. Since Chang Wai is providing all the materials, I have enough time to clean all areas before the work begins. Because each steel beam needs to be welded individually, the work on each door takes quite a while and isn't finished until the afternoon. I have to be present constantly during the welding work to keep an eye on the dogs.

During the workers' lunch break, I distribute the medication, administer Lena's infusion, and feed the dogs inside the house and in the double gate area. After the workers leave, I feed the remaining dogs and refill the drinking water in some areas. The new doors are now impenetrable for the dogs. I hope they don't find a new way through the metal sheets next to the doors.

Monday, 8 April 2024

On my way to the clinic this morning, I check on Rita and her puppies, who are peacefully sleeping under the bridge in the damp sand. Yaya's condition remains unchanged. She is still in my cage but is no longer on the drip.

At the shelter, my first stop is to ensure the newly installed doors are still intact. They are. I bring Safo from outside into the Dodger area. Then, I distribute medication to Lena and treat the eyes of Kylie, Jake, Billy, and Merlin with Genta-Oph, as I do every day. After that, I go through all the areas to clean, feed, and water the dogs. The neighbors seem to have disappeared, leaving three dogs behind. I feed them as well.

After finishing the feeding, I administer the infusion to Lena. She continues to patiently undergo treatment. In the late afternoon, Dr. Oi informs me of the negative result of Yaya's test for distemper. Therefore, I will bring Yaya back to the shelter tomorrow.

Tuesday, 9 April 2024

Since I'm occupied with urgent computer work in the mornings, I don't arrive at the shelter until Pat and Claudia have already started their tasks. My first glance goes to the new doors; they've lived up to the promise I had hoped for. Then, I dispose of the waste I hadn't managed to clear yesterday and let Safo into the Dodger area. Meanwhile, Pat prepares the feeding, and Claudia cleans the areas, washes the drinking containers and tubs, and renews the water.

During this time, I'm with Dr. Oi discussing the Yaya situation. Dr. Oi doesn't give me any hope that Yaya will recover, so we decide to euthanize her. During the procedure, I hold Yaya in my arms and shed bitter tears as she gradually passes away. I hadn't known Yaya for very long, but her gentle nature touched my heart.

After returning to the shelter with Yaya wrapped up, Claudia finishes her tasks, and Pat feeds the dogs in the two remaining areas. I entrust Pat with the responsibility for the shelter and take Yaya for cremation at the NPW Clinic. Then I get a sturdy metal cage at Thai Watsadu. Claudia kindly covers the cost for it.

Since it's already late afternoon, I don't make it back to the shelter again. Instead, I check on the Pong dogs. Fortunately, among them, I also spot Igor near the parking lot.

Wednesday, 10 April 2024

Upon arriving at the shelter, I first walk through all the areas and bring Safo inside. Then I clean the front areas and replenish the drinking water there. Next, I'm with Lizzy at Dr. Oi's. I have a blood test done because Lizzy has lost some weight. It turns out Lizzy is suffering from moderate anemia. Her Doxycycline/Ferric treatment will typically take six weeks.

Diudiu also doesn't seem entirely healthy to me. Although her palate, like Lizzy's, looks pink, I'll still need to treat her. Lena continues to receive Renavast and Doxy, along with the saline infusion. After cleaning the rear areas as well, I feed the dogs. There's still dry food from yesterday in some areas.

I have a feeling Ruby could be at risk. She constantly lies alone in her Sala and seems to have no interaction with the other dogs. Tarik and Tibor have taken command in the three connected areas and are not completely trustworthy. That's why I relocate Ruby to the corner Sala area and close the gate to the area where she usually stays.

Thursday, 11 April 2024

In the morning, I pick up dry food and then go through all the areas in the shelter again. The new gates make passages much easier. Safo is by the back gate, so I bring him back to his area. Ruby seems to have settled into the Pat area. She prefers to be alone anyway, so let's stick with this solution for now.

I distribute medication to Lena, Diudiu, and Lizzy, then put away the dry food. After that, I clean the house, the house area, and the double gate area, and then the back areas. After topping up the water in some areas, I feed the dogs next door first, and then the shelter dogs. I collect all the bowls and food trays and then administer the infusion to Lena.

Gop is worried about the neighbor's dogs, who seem to be roaming further now. The neighbors went back to their home province for Songkran, leaving the dogs behind. However, I saw all five of them near the house in the afternoon. They have food and water available, and they probably won't run away. Blacky's back wounds have fully healed by now.

Friday, 12 April 2024

Today, I'm not setting off until late morning because I need to wait for a True technician. Once I'm at the shelter, my first task is to distribute the morning medications. Then, I go through and clean all areas, refreshing the drinking water as well. I let Safo into the shelter, but he's soon back outside again. Ruby is doing well in the Pat area.

As usual, I start by feeding the dogs in the house area and the double gate area, and then move on to the dogs in the back areas. After giving the house area another thorough clean, Lena gets her infusion from me again. Lena is still behaving normally and eating enough.

Saturday, 13 April 2024

Pat is already working when I arrive at the shelter in the morning. I distribute the medications, clean the back areas, dispose of waste, and let Safo in. Then I refill the drinking water where needed. While Pat feeds the dogs, I administer Lena's infusion. After Pat leaves, I go through all the areas again to clean up and decide to end today's workday a bit earlier.

Sunday, 14 April 2024

My first task this morning is to walk through the shelter again. Yesterday afternoon, I left the connecting doors between the Pat area, the area with two salas, and the area with three salas open to give the dogs more room to roam. This measure seems to be working well because Ruby has settled in the corner sala in the Pat area, Sita, Venus, and Buffy are in the area with three salas, Nuri and Shaina are staying in the area with two salas, and only Tarik and Tibor are moving between these two areas.

After confirming that there is also harmony in the remaining areas, I let Safo into the shelter and then distribute the morning medications. I now begin a Doxy/Ferric treatment for Tinka, who is showing slight movement disorders. Once the clinic reopens after Songkran, I will have her examined.

I then clean the house, the house area, the double door area, and then the back areas. After disposing of the waste, I feed the dogs and refresh the drinking water in some areas. Next, I administer an infusion to Lena. Before concluding the day, Lena, Lizzy, Tinka, and Diudiu receive another dose of Ferric.

Monday, 15 April 2024

After confirming that Ruby is in her place and bringing Safo into the Dodger area, I distribute the morning medications, clean all areas, and refresh the drinking water there. Then I feed the dogs.

Next, I leave the dogs and head to Wat Amparahm. There, Ba Bät informs me that the boatmen have taken the rice I provided for the beach dogs. Since the beach people have disappeared, Ba Bät has been taking care of the beach dogs. I agree with her to provide her with more rice in a week if needed.

Additionally, I inquire about the whereabouts of Dotty, and Ba Bät leads me to a row of humble houses to show me Dotty. However, it turns out that the dog she shows me is one I have never seen before. The female dog suffers from an advanced genital tumor. I contact Dr. Kwanchai to see if I can bring the dog to him, but he informs me that he cannot currently take in any dogs. What might have happened to Dotty remains a mystery to me.

Back at the shelter, I clean all areas again. Safo has already climbed over the fence and is outside again, while Ruby is crouching in her corner sala. Only Tibor, Tarik, and Shaina are taking advantage of the extra space provided by merging the three areas. Venus, Sita, and Buffy always stay in the area with three salas. After administering an infusion to Lena and providing Tinka, Lizzy, Diudiu, and Lena with Ferric, I conclude the long workday.

Tuesday, 16 April 2024

Pat and Claudia are already working at the shelter when I arrive there in the morning. I distribute the morning medications while Pat prepares the feedings. Claudia takes care of cleaning the bowls and tubs and refreshes the water.

Pat mentions that Zola doesn't feel secure in the large sala area, so we move her to Ruby's area after I secure the access to the area of Nuri, Shaina, Tarik, and Tibor. Since Taya and Tiny also don't have a good standing in the house, we relocate them to the Pat area where they join Ruby and Toya. The corner sala in the Pat area is spacious enough to provide ample space for all four dogs. By the afternoon, the relocation seems to be working out. Tomorrow will tell if this can be a permanent solution.

During feeding, I bring Safo back inside, but he's soon back out again. After cleaning the back areas, I dispose of the waste and several palm fronds. The dry-hot weather isn't favorable for the palms either; two of them have already died.

While Claudia and I wrap up the work in the back areas, Pat cleans the house. I take one more walk through the shelter and then say goodbye to the dogs, who are now resting peacefully for the day.

Wednesday, 17 April 2024

I'm up early at Khun Yao's to start the process of registering the new pickup truck. Khun Yao has been diligently inspecting the pickup since yesterday and has already replaced the brake pads. Ooy, his wife, kindly assists me with the immigration paperwork. She will also handle the remaining registration steps in the coming days.

By early afternoon, I'm at the shelter. I start by walking through the entire shelter, letting Safo in, and then checking how Ruby, Zola, Tiny, and Taya are getting along. Tiny and Taya are lying together, Zola is a bit apart from them, and Ruby is hanging out in the sala. Ruby seems to be disrupting the new order, and Zola isn't too happy about her relocation either. However, Tiny and Taya seem to be comfortable in their new surroundings. For now, I'll leave things as they are and decide tomorrow if rearranging them again is necessary.

After ensuring order in the other areas, I distribute the medications and then clean the house, the house area, and the double gate area. Next, I feed the dogs in all the areas and then clean the back areas. There's still food available for the neighbor's dogs, so I only refresh their drinking water. The water bowls in the back areas are still filled. I only need to provide fresh water for the dogs in the front areas.

After giving Lena an extra portion of canned food, I administer her infusion. Lena remains very patient throughout, and the procedure is completed in just a few minutes.

Thursday, 18 April 2024

I enter the double-gate area and the house section, seeing that everything is fine so far. Next, I check the Pat-area. Ruby, Toya, Tiny, and Taya have gotten along, but the arrangement isn't ideal. Therefore, I move Zola back to the large Sala area and relocate Tanya, the sister of Taya and Tiny, from the house section to the Pat-area. I hope the three sisters can now stand up better against Ruby together. After distributing the medications, I clean and then feed the dogs. It's brutally hot today, so I take a lunch break after feeding.

Back at the shelter, I go through all the areas for cleaning and then distribute the evening medications. Next, I administer Lena's daily infusion. Tiny and Taya seem happier now that they are reunited with their sister. Tomorrow, I'll see if Ruby is also okay with the rearrangement.

Friday, 19 April 2024

After checking on the double-gate area and the house area, I enter the Pat-area to check on Ruby and the three sisters. Tanya, Taya, and Tiny are in good spirits. Adding Tanya to the area has given Taya and Tiny the confidence they need not to let Ruby dominate them anymore. Zola has seamlessly reintegrated into the large Sala area.

Since the neighbors are still not back, I first feed and water the dogs outside the gate and then distribute the morning medications. After that, I start cleaning and then refresh the drinking water in all areas. To take a short break, I then administer Lena's infusion. Following this, I feed Lena an extra portion of canned food. Her condition appears to be stable.

After feeding, I go through all the areas again and clean them once more. Finally, Lena, Diudiu, Lizzy, and Tinka receive their dose of Ferric. In the evening, I meet with Anne and Ann from Rugby School. They have generously donated to us again.

Saturday, 20 April 2024

Pat and Claudia are already working when I arrive at the shelter. Pat is preparing the food, while Claudia cleans the areas, refills drinking water, and refreshes the water in the tubs. I distribute the medications, settle Safo in his area, and then check on the recent rearrangement in Pat's section. It seems that Ruby has now accepted the new arrangement. Tanya, Taya, and Tiny appear noticeably more comfortable than before in the house area. Once all the dogs are well taken care of, Pat and Claudia leave. I go through all the areas once more and then administer Lena's infusion.

Sunday, 21 April 2024

To my surprise, this morning I find Tiny crouched in one of the house enclosures. She is unharmed. How she managed to overcome the two-meter-high fence separating the Pat area from the house area is a mystery to me. It seemed she was okay with the relocation, but something must have prompted her to return to the house. However, Taya and Tanya seem to be getting along with Ruby. I might make another attempt with Tiny since she's now relatively isolated in the house area.

In all other areas, the dogs are living harmoniously. I let Safo back into the Dodger area. After distributing the medications, I clean all the areas and refill water where necessary.

To escape the unbearable heat, I take a break to administer an infusion to Lena. Afterwards, I feed Lena, Diudiu, Billy, and Hiro an extra portion of rice mixed with canned food.

In the late afternoon, I drive with Saek to Najomtien. Camilo, a traveler, has found a dog with a severely injured front paw and asked me to check on the dog. Despite two attempts, Saek fails to dart the dog. He will have to try again early next week.

Monday, 22 April 2024

I've come down with a severe cold that's drained all my energy. This morning, I managed to distribute the medications and feed the dogs inside and in the double-gate area. Afterward, I lay down on one of the dog beds and drifted in and out of sleep for hours. The house dogs have been very sweet, and Edith even curled up beside me.

After getting a bit of rest, I fed the dogs in the back areas. Taya, Tanya, and Ruby are getting along well, and Tiny has settled back into the house area. I brought Safo into the Dodger area.

Today, I can only manage the most essential tasks. Once in the apartment, I immediately lay down in bed and didn't wake up until the evening. I'm not feeling much better, but I hope to have a bit more energy tomorrow.

Unfortunately, that's not the case, but I still have my tasks to complete. Fortunately, today is Pat's workday, so I can muster the energy to handle necessary errands in town around midday. Additional documents for transferring ownership of the pickup need to be signed, and it's also time again for the quarterly reporting with Immigration.

By late afternoon, I finally arrive at the shelter. Pat has taken good care of the dogs. I'll collect and dispose of the waste tomorrow morning. After distributing the medications, I administer Lena's infusion. I plan to be at the shelter early tomorrow morning to avoid the day's heat.

Wednesday, 24 April 2024

I couldn't manage to get to the dogs very early again today, as I'm still not feeling well. By late morning, I finally muster the energy to drive to the park dogs, as Michael had informed me that Rita wasn't doing well. I find her three pups under the bridge, but no sign of Rita. I search the entire area for her, but she remains elusive.

After finishing cleaning the front areas at the shelter, I have to take a break. The heat is unbearable again, and my body can't handle this strain due to my cold. To regain some strength, I lie down with the dogs on the cot in the house every half hour. The dogs sense that I'm not well, and we rest together.

In between cleaning tasks, I distribute the medications and administer the infusion to Lena. Since Pat took good care of the dogs yesterday, I skip today's feeding, grateful to finally make it home with my last bit of energy.

In the evening, I visit the park dogs and actually find Rita with her puppies by the bridge. Old Man is also there; he's moving quite well again. I thoroughly check Rita to determine any issues but find nothing unusual. However, Rita yelps briefly when Bella bumps into her. I then notice Rita sitting down twice to urinate. She might be suffering from a bladder problem. I'll try to take Rita to Dr. Oi  tomorrow morning.

Thursday, 25 April 2024

On my way to the shelter, I stop by Pong Park to pick up Rita. However, I only find the three puppies under the bridge, but not Rita. Since I don't know where else to look for her, I inform Michael and Nick about my unsuccessful attempt. Nick will try to locate Rita later in the afternoon.

At the shelter, I first go through all the areas again and let Safo inside. Then, I distribute the medications. It appears that Soda, one of the neighbor's dogs, has an issue. Since I can't get close to Soda, I have to rely on Gop's judgment, who recommends starting a doxycycline treatment.

Next, I begin cleaning the house, the house area, and the double-gate area. Afterward, I clean the back areas and refresh the drinking water where needed. Then, I feed the dogs in the house and the double-gate area, and continue feeding in all the other areas. Today isn't unbearably hot, and as my energy gradually returns, I manage to finish the tasks by early afternoon. Administering the saline solution to Lena feels like a brief break.

In the late afternoon, Nick informs me that he has found Rita. I pick her up at the bridge and take her to Dr. Oi. Rita undergoes a thorough examination and X-rays. Dr. Oi determines that there is a foreign object in her vaginal tract. Whether it's a residual tumor still needs to be confirmed. Rita recently underwent five rounds of chemotherapy treatment.

Friday, 26 April 2024

After briefly checking on Rita's three puppies in the morning, I pick up dry food and then head to the shelter. Then I administering the morning medications, clean the front areas, let Safo in, and refresh the drinking water where necessary. Next, I move on to cleaning the back areas. Then, I begin feeding the dogs inside the house and in the double gate area, and storing away the newly acquired dry food. After a short break, I feed the dogs in the back areas.

Once all the dogs are well taken care of, I drive to the clinic to check on Rita. Rita is being treated with antibiotics and prednisolone. She will remain in the clinic for observation for a few more days.

In the evening, I receive a call from Camilo; Saek managed to dart the dog in Najomtien. The handover of the dog takes place in Pong. Camilo accompanies me, and together we drive to the Dr. Oi Clinic. Dr. Oi, Dr. Beam, and two staff members are waiting for us, as it's already half-past eight, and the clinic usually closes at eight. The dog is preliminarily examined and stays in the clinic. Camilo kindly covers the treatment costs.
