Activity Report - July 2023 

Tessa, who had a bone splinter on her hind leg, managed to avoid surgery. By the end of the month, she was moving almost normally among her siblings. Lai, a dog under Michael's care, was diagnosed with TVT. She's receiving Vincristine injections weekly, showing promising progress. Near Lai's area, I found a dog with a severely inflamed hind paw, necessitating amputation. Dang had to remain in the clinic until month-end.

Major repairs were carried out in the shelter within two weeks, including manufacturing new Salas and resting areas. The commotion led to an attack on Mona, requiring a few days of treatment but she recovered by month's end. Tara's hind leg injury healed well, though she remained in the shelter for coat improvement. Maggie Song found a foster home with Louise, who aims to find her a permanent home.

Dam, amputated over a month ago, has grown comfortable and is thriving. Tara, however, appeared uneasy and was returned to the temple in hopes of her recovery in a familiar setting. Alex, an old friend, asked me to check his two German Shepherds, Lilly and Mella. Lilly underwent a procedure and stayed at the clinic until month-end. Jake, relocated from the temple, is losing weight, testing positive for Anaplasmosis and Erlichiosis, requiring extended treatment. Darla got into a scuffle and needed stitches, spending a few days in a house kennel to limit movement.

Activity Report - June 2023 

On my way to the shelter, I spotted a dog with a severely swollen front paw in a field. When I inquired about it, the residents informed me that the dog had been hit by a vehicle months ago and hadn't received any treatment since then. With the help of the residents, I managed to take the dog to Dr. Oi, who deemed amputation of the leg necessary. After a successful operation, I temporarily accommodated Dam at the shelter ten days later.

Shaina, Arkan, Norbu, Talib, and Jomo, the larger puppies, have been sterilized during the month. Dina, who had been constantly harassed by Cookie and whom I tried to make comfortable in several areas, was fatally attacked in the newly created area adjacent to the large Sala area. Dogs from the large Sala had gained access to that new area and attacked Dina. Dina was the sweetest dog one could imagine, and I deeply blame myself for not having protected her better. I also have to cope with another loss. Neung, who had lived without any problems at Wat Amparahm for years, could not be found anymore.

Tessa, one of the black puppies, was bitten in the hind leg, resulting in a bone fracture. After a three-day stay in the clinic, I placed her in the treatment room, which she shares with Kylie and Maggie Song. There is hope that surgical intervention can be avoided.

At the end of the month, I found Nousha lying dead under one of the benches in the house. She died from internal bleeding, and the cause remains unknown to me. Just twelve hours earlier, Nousha was completely fine.

During my routine visit to the temple, I discovered that Tara had sustained an ugly wound on her left hind leg. After tending to the wound at Dr. Oi's, I am now temporarily housing Tara in the double gate area of the shelter.

Activity Report - May 2023

The merger of the black puppies with the older puppies and some of the larger dogs in the big Sala area was quite successful. Although the young puppies still need to establish their places in the hierarchy, that will be done in the coming weeks.

I had to make a few more relocations. Zola and Toya couldn't quite find their way in the newly created area and are now living in the double-gate section, which they share with several other dogs. Both dogs are fine with the relocation. The newly created area is now occupied only by Nuri and Mona.

Dina, Cookie, and Maggie Song, the three dogs that I recently discovered who were not spayed, have now been sterilized. I also had six dogs from the temple beach and two others from Wat Yang Yai sterilized. Talib and Jomo, the two older shelter puppies, have been sterilized as well.

Talib suffered an ugly chest wound while trying to pass through a metal sheet. The wound is healing well, but Talib needs to visit the clinic every three days to change the bandage. Kylie's coat condition is improving. She has decided to stay in the treatment room, and that seems to be doing her good. However, Roshi's coat condition is still unsatisfactory, despite her receiving special food.

Billy has developed swelling in the throat area. He is being treated. A blood test showed slight anemia. Kyra is also slightly anemic. Both dogs are undergoing a six-week Doxycycline/Ferric treatment.

Activity Report - April 2023 

This month has been marked by several relocations. Jake, one of the temple dogs, developed fur problems, so I took him to the shelter where he settled in quite well. He now shares the double-gate area with Khiaow, Chip, Billy, Satya, Maggie, and also Tinka, who joined from the house area. 

The five black puppies Tibor, Tarik, Tasha, Tessa, and Tina, as well as Shaina, have been relocated to the Pat area, which they share with Nuri. Dotty has returned to the temple where she is happier. She has recovered well from the surgical procedures.

 

Towards the end of the month, I realized that Cookie is in heat. During her sterilization, it turned out that not even her fallopian tubes were cut. To prevent her from being mounted by the large puppies that are not yet castrated, she stays in the treatment room for a week. 

At the end of the month, we gradually introduced the large puppies to the small ones. They will grow up together in the foreseeable future.

 

With the completion of the month, I have a new area constructed so that we have more separation possibilities. It often happens that dogs who have been getting along fine for a long time develop mutual animosities and have to be separated.

 Activity Report - March 2023

The events of the past month had not been easy for me to handle. It started with me having to take Aki to the clinic because he was not feeling well. He died under my hands on the examination table. The cause of his rapid health deterioration was internal bleeding. The day after, I was with Norbu at Dr. Oi's. His test results showed alarmingly low levels of red blood cells. Norbu was put on an IV. Serge informed me that two of the Mabprachan puppies had been run over. I decided to take the remaining five puppies with me.

At the beginning of the second week of March, I saw Jampa, one of Dahn's puppies, dead under a pallet. The day after, I found Hakim and Yana dead as well. I took Arkan and Kito, two more of Dahn's puppies, to Dr. Oi, barely alive.

Two days later, I was with Japa, Kavi, and Shaina at Dr. Oi's. I had taken these three puppies from Beppe. Japa and Kavi died after two days - also from internal bleeding. Shaina survived. All five Mabprachan puppies showed similar symptoms too but survived until the end of the month.

Norbu, Arkan and Kito recovered after intensive treatment. In his last days, Tommy didn't take in any food at all. I took him to Dr. Oi's clinic, where he died after two days from kidney failure.

 Activity Report - February 2023

During my temple visit on the first day of the month, I witnessed that Satya had been attacked by a couple of the front hall dogs she had been living with for years without incident. Since her sister Panya suddenly disappeared, Satya has isolated herself and is vulnerable now.

I detected a deep wound on Taco's back which needed to be treated. So I decided to take both dogs into the shelter. Taco got back to the temple after his wound had healed, but Satya is going to stay at the shelter for the time being.

Asha, one of the four pups I took in on Beppe's request, got bitten to death. Jade was the culprit. I took her back to the area where her mum Amy and her three siblings live. Jade blended in quite well.

The abbot of Wat Yang Yai asked me to get a couple of the temple dogs sterilized. During the month, twelve dogs have been sterilized.

Tommy lost weight recently. A blood test revealed a very high creatinine level, which is usually fatal within weeks. Tommy receives a daily saline solution infusion now.

 Activity Report - January 2023

Dotty, one of my temple dogs, developed a massive swelling on the right side of her body. A test revealed that the tissue was not cancerous and could be removed. Dotty is still recovering in the shelter. Mona received her fourth and final Vincristine injection. She will be vetted again next month. 

Towards the end of the month, I took in four more six-week-old puppies. Beppe, a rescuer friend, found them motherless on a waste ground and kept them for two weeks. Since Beppe lives in a small house, he asked me to admit the pups. 

I integrated the eight older pups together with her mother into a group of adult dogs in a spacious area. The four new pups are now staying with a couple of adult dogs in an area where the older pups have been staying. The adult dogs in that area are already used to staying with pups, which makes the integration of the new pups easier.
